HOW TO MAKE CHANGE PERMANENT IN 2026

Jerry S. Lin argues affirmations and journaling fail because they target the head brain, which processes only ten bits per second, while the gut brain handles a billion. Real change requires identifying your core belief, reducing its emotional charge, then installing new behavior through tiny repetitions that physically rewire neural pathways.

If you've been trying to change your mindset, stop right there. Not because mindset does not matter, because mindset is the wrong address. Here's what I mean. You've probably been told that if you think differently, you'll act differently. Change your thoughts and change your life, right? And so you've worked on your thoughts, affirmations and journaling, reframing, gratitude practice, and your thoughts did change, and then you got triggered. And the behavior you were trying to change, what happened? Came right back. Because the behavior does not live in your thoughts. It lives in your nervous system, specifically in your gut brain, the part of you that processes close to a billion bits of information per second. That runs your behavior automatically before your conscious mind even registers what's happening. And your gut brain does not speak the language of mindset. It does not update through positive thinking. It does not respond affirmations. It responds to one thing, repetition. Specifically, new physical, emotional experiences repeated enough times that it writes a new file that eventually runs faster than the old one. See, that's the nervous system retraining. It's the only method that produces permanent change. So in 2026, we finally have enough neuroscience, enough applied behavioral research, and enough real-world evidence to say this clearly: mindset shifts are temporary. Nervous system rewiring, now that's permanent. Today I'm going to show you exactly how to do it. I'm Jerry S Lin, human systems engineer with the Five Second Reflex. If therapy, willpower, and self-help haven't worked, this channel exists for you. We go to the root of why change never sticks and give you the tools to make it permanent so you can finally live the life you want. Let me show you exactly why mindset work produces temporary results. You have 3 brains, not 1. You got your head brain. That's the thinker, the logic, planning, language, conscious awareness. And then your heart brain, that's the feeler, the connection, the belonging, love, grief, compassion. And then your gut brain. See, that's the survival brain, the automation, the pattern detection, habits, the fight or flight system. Everything your body does without you deciding. See, mindset work lives almost entirely in your head brain. And your head brain processes only 10 bits of information per second. Your gut brain produces close to a billion. So that's 100 million times difference. So when your gut brain runs a behavioral pattern, it runs it at a billion bits per second. And your head brain is trying to override it at 10. This is not a fair fight. This is a coffee straw trying to redirect a fire hose. And the fire hose always wins. Every time. Until you stop trying to redirect it from your head brain. And start retraining it at the source. See, the gut brain, it updates through repetition of new experiences, not just understanding, not intention, not a decision made at the conscious level. This new physical experience carried through your body, repeated enough times that the gut brain files it as your new normal. That's the mechanism, guys. The method has to match the mechanism. Or the change will automatically just dissolve. For 30 years, I built systems that could not fail. That was the standard. Not probably fine, not should hold up under normal conditions. It cannot fail. And the way I built to those standards was not through intention. It was through engineering. I designed every failure point out in the system in advance. I built redundancy. So that when one component failed, the system just kept running. I tested under conditions far more extreme than the system would ever actually face and then watched the system perform. Not because the system wanted to perform, because the system was built to perform automatically under pressure without anyone needing to make a good decision in that moment. And I applied that to every infrastructure project I've ever touched. And for 30 years, I've never applied it to myself because for 30 years I thought personal change was a mindset problem. I thought if I understood myself well enough, decide clear enough, wanted it badly enough, the behavior would change. And so I collected insights. I read the books, I did the therapy, I had those breakthroughs. And then got triggered and reacted exactly the same way I always had because I was trying to change infrastructure-level problems with consumer-grade tools. After the brain event that I had, after the forced stop, when I finally ran the same diagnostic on myself that I run on every system I've ever built, I found so many points of failure. The automated process that were running on outdated instructions, the file that had been generating results I had never consciously chosen, and I applied the same standards. Not intention, engineering. Not mindset, repetition. Building the system that runs differently, automatically, under that pressure, without needing a good decision in the moment. And for the first time, that change held. 5 steps. This is the framework that followed the sequence and change became permanent. Step 1. Identify the file, not the behavior. Every behavior you want to change is generated by a file, a core belief, a core identity statement, an unresolved emotional imprint. The behavior is the output. The file is actually the source. And changing the output without addressing the source is like playing whack-a-mole. Take any behavior you want to change and ask why 5 times. Each time taking the honest answer, not just the polished one, the real one. The fifth answer is usually closest to the file. Find the file first. Now step 2, you reduce the charge in your body. The file has an emotional charge attached to it. That charge is what gives it power. And the charge is what's stored in the body, not in the thought, in your body. And that method for reducing charge is not thinking differently. It's locating where it lives. Physically in your body, in your chest, in your stomach, in your throat, or is it in your jaw, on the top of your head, and then allowing it to be there without suppressing it or acting on it. You fully feel it because what you allow to move through you, it loses power over you. And what you suppress, what you push down, stays stored in your gut and it keeps generating the behavior. Then step 3, install the new behavior through tiny reps. Not a big change. Stupid small. Small enough that the gut brain does not flag it as a threat to the familiar. See, small enough to get past that prison guard because the guards show up at the edge of the comfort zone. And a change that's too ambitious, it hits the guards before you get any reps in. One rep, small, consistent, and daily. And each rep files new evidence in your gut brain. Evidence that someone with your identity does this now. And then step 4, use the trigger trigger as the training data. When the old pattern fires, most people treat it as failure. It's actually the opposite. It's the most valuable moment in training. The moment between the trigger and the reaction is that 5-second window, the gap where your gut brain's automated response can be intercepted and a new response can be chosen. See, every time you catch that window and choose differently, you're filing a new rep that your gut brain can't ignore. Not because you suppress the old response, because you practice the new one at the exact moment the old one would have fired. That's replacing it. That is precision retraining. It's exponentially more powerful than practicing the new behavior in absence of a trigger. Step 5, build the identity before you need the motivation. Motivation fades, identity sticks. So the question is not, how do I stay motivated to keep doing this? Question is, does the identity file need to stay for this behavior to be automatic? Does it? And what evidence do I need to generate and update that file? See, a person who exercises regularly doesn't motivate themselves to exercise. They exercise because that's just what they do. Because the identity file says, I'm someone who moves my body. See, build the evidence for the identity first. One rep at a time, and the motivation problem resolves itself because identity does not need motivation. Identity just runs. It's just who you are. Watch this to the end. I have a free 10-minute assessment that identifies exactly which of your 4 core patterns is the one your change keeps dissolving against and which steps in this framework is the most critical entry point for your specific nervous system. 10 minutes, free, specific to you. Link at the end. Keep on going. Let me give you the plain language version of why this works. Your nervous system has something called neuroplasticity, the ability to physically rewire based on any new experience, not based on new thinking, new experiences. So when you repeat a new behavior, the neurons actually fire and the neurons that fire together, they wire together. The new pathways get stronger and the grips get stronger with the reps. The old pathways, the unused ones, they actually get weaker. And this is not motivational language. This is literal physical mechanisms on how your brain changes. And the key is repeat. Practice. Not understand. Not intend. Repeat. Get the reps in. This is also sometimes called the illusory truth effect. When you hear or experience something 7 to 10 times, your gut brain actually begins to file it as true, whether it's true or not. Not because it has evaluated the evidence, because the repetition itself is actually the signal that the gut brain uses for the truth. That's the secret. This is how your conditioning was installed in the first place, through repetition in childhood, before you could evaluate whether it was accurate That's how it gets updated through a new repetition in your current reality. That is the science. And the framework I just gave you is designed around that mechanism, not around willpower, not around mindset, and how the nervous system actually updates. The reason I teach this, it's not because I read about it. It's because I lived on the wrong side of it for 30 years. And when I finally applied the same engineering discipline to my nervous system that I applied to every system I've ever built, the change that had been dissolving for decades finally held. Not through motivation, not through a better mindset. Through identifying the file, reducing the charge, installing the new behavior through tiny consistent reps, using every trigger as training data, guys, and building the identity evidence before I needed the motivation. Those same 5 steps repeated until My system ran differently automatically, the way the old patterns used to run automatically. This is the whole thing. It's so exciting and it's available to you right now. Not when you feel more ready, not when the circumstances are better, when I have time. With the next rep, which you can do today, it excites me so much that I can share this with you because in 2026, there's no shortage of information about change. There's a shortage of the right method applied to the right system. And your nervous system does not change through mindset. It changes through repetition of new experiences at the body level. 5 steps. Find the file, reduce the charge, install through tiny reps. Every trigger has a training. Build the identity evidence before you need motivation. That sequence applied consistently is the difference between change that dissolves and change that is permanent. Not because you finally want it enough, because you finally understand the system actually updates and you're building to that standard. You cannot fail, guys. Can not fail. This is the standard and that is exactly what your nervous system is capable of when you train it correctly. And here's your gift. Scan the QR code on the right side of the screen right now or the link In the description, the free 10-minute assessment tells you which of your core patterns is the one your change keeps dissolving against, and which of your 5 steps is your most critical entry point. Core belief, core identity, core values, emotional imprints. 10 minutes. That's all it takes. Free, no fluff. Take it now while the framework is fresh. And if this video finally gave you the mechanical explanation instead of another motivational push, like it, subscribe it. And when you subscribe, the algorithm puts this in front of someone else who has been working on the wrong system and wondering why the change will not hold. Let's get it to them. If you're tired of change that never lasts, you are in the right place. We teach you how to uncover those hidden patterns quietly running your life, retrain them at the root, and finally make the change that actually sticks. Subscribe. I'm Jerry S Lin, 5 Second Reflex.
