Why Certain People Trigger You

Jerry S. Lin argues that your triggered reactions aren't personality flaws but learned patterns from childhood that can be retrained. Knowing why you react a certain way isn't enough; you need repeated practice to rewire the reflex, like learning any skill. He offers free weekly sessions to practice catching and reshaping these automatic responses.

I wanna start with a question that I've never been asked, and I'm guessing you haven't either. Not in school, not by your parents, not by any teacher or coach or mentor. And here it is: Who taught you how to react? Not what to think, not what to believe, how to react. In the first 5 seconds after someone disappoints you, after someone embarrasses you in a room, after your teenager looks at you like you're nothing, after your spouse says something in that specific tone that you've been hearing for 20 years? Who taught you what to do in those first 5 seconds? Nobody. Nobody taught you that. And what I want to spend the next 15 minutes showing you is why that matters more than almost anything you were ever taught. My name is Jerry S. Lin, I'm 50 years old. I spent the first 20 years of my adult life building technology companies, systems that had to perform under pressure without failing when things got real. And I spent years after that watching myself fall apart in the exact moments that mattered the most. Smart guy, built real things, couldn't stop reacting in ways I hated. Couldn't figure out why. Let me tell you about Hyde Street. I was 17. My friend and I were driving to get some phở, Vietnamese noodle soup, my comfort food, the thing that felt like home as a teenager. He said, "Turn right on Hyde." I said, "I can't see the sign." He said, "You can't read that?" I couldn't read it. Turned out I've been functionally vision impaired since 7th grade. Sitting in every classroom for 5 years copying off the kid next to me guessing at the blackboard because I assumed that's what school was. Sitting from back that far, blurry was normal. See, my sister since the 4th grade wanted to be an optometrist and she was right there in the home but nobody noticed because blurry was my normal. And when you never see clearly, you don't know you're missing anything. You think everyone else is just better at squinting. Here's what I understand now, 33 years later. Everything I'm going to teach you today, every pattern, every reaction, every way you respond under pressure works exactly the same way. You absorbed those patterns so young, so completely that they feel like your personality. They feel like who you are. They feel like the truth, but they're not your personality. They're your blurry vision. They're the instruction manual that got installed before you were old enough to write your own. Let me walk you through what school taught you. Reading, writing, arithmetic, history, how to pass a test, how to sit still and raise your hand. Now let me walk through what school didn't teach you. What to do when someone you love completely shuts down on you and you don't know why. What to do with the anger that comes out of nowhere and lands on the wrong person. We don't learn what to do when you're sitting at the dinner table with your own children and you hear your parents' words coming out of your mouth and you swore you'd never say that. What to do with the feeling that no matter what you achieve, it's not quite enough. That the approval you're looking for hasn't come yet. That you're performing a life that looks right from the outside but feels hollow on the inside. Nobody taught you that. Not one class, not one chapter, not one conversation at the dinner table that was specifically designed to prepare you for any of it. So how did you learn? The same way everyone does. You watched. You absorbed. You were in the room when something happened and your parents argued. Your parents criticized them. Your teacher embarrassed a kid in class. Your body filed it away. Not as a lesson, as a truth. This is what happens when people are disappointed. This is what happens when you fail. This is what love looks This is what safety feels like. This is what danger looks like. And it happened to you before you were old enough to question it. Before you're old enough to say, "Wait, is this actually true or is this just what was modeled for me?" Here's the thing about your family. They weren't wrong to teach you what they taught you. They were teaching you the best instruction manual they had, which was the one they absorbed from their family, which was the one their parents absorbed from theirs. Your grandfather's rules: sacrifice, silence, don't complain, provide and they'll respect you, don't air your laundry, the strength means not showing weakness. Those rules were built for a world that looked completely different from the one you're living in right now. See, they were built for a world where survival was the measure, where stability was the goal, where you didn't have the luxury of asking, "But am I happy?" You live in a world where connections matter, where emotional intelligence matters, where your children need you present, not just providing, where your marriage needs more than logistics and shared mortgage, and you're trying to navigate a completely different world with a 1965 instruction manual. So no wonder something's not working. I want to introduce you to something. There's a gap between what happens to you, the text that comes in, the tone of a voice, the look on someone's face, and what you do next. That gap is approximately 5 seconds. And in those 5 seconds, most of us don't decide anything. Our body decides for us. In a reaction based on every pattern that was installed when we were young. The flash of anger, the shutdown, the need to fix it immediately, the people-pleasing "yes" that comes out of your mouth, or "sorry," before you even thought about it, the silence that goes on for days. That's not you choosing. That's the instruction manual running. I call it the 5-second reflex. And here's the thing about reflexes. They're not permanent. They were trained, which means they can be retrained. Not through willpower, not through knowing better, not through reading another book about why you are the way you are. It's through practice, through showing up and working on it the same way you'd work on any skill that nobody ever taught you. Deliberately, repeatedly, until the new response becomes the one that fires first. It's like if I'm teaching you how to play basketball. I can give you all the instructions, but until you have the ball and you're shooting and you can feel the wrist— when we're talking about the wrist, you can feel what that's doing and adjust. So what we do is I can give you all the information you need, but without actually practicing. And that's what we do. We practice with you. And I want to leave you with 3 things. One, whatever you keep doing that you hate, The anger, the silence, the people pleasing, the patterns you swore you'd break. It's not your character. It's an untaught skill. And untaught skills can be relearned at any age. 2. Knowing why you do it is not the same as changing it. You've probably been in therapy, you've probably read the books, you probably understand yourself, and it still happens. That's because understanding lives here. The patterns live somewhere else. It lives here and here. Somewhere older somewhere Your understanding doesn't reach until you train it. And 3, you are not behind. You are not broken. You just never got the glasses. And the good news is, unlike the 7th grade self who spent 5 years squinting at the blackboard, you don't have to wait another 30 years to finally see clearly. Every Saturday morning, free, 30 minutes with a 7-minute reset. I run a live session called the Saturday Reset. It's an introduction manual nobody gave us. 30 minutes plus 7 minutes of practical work on that exact skill that we're never taught. How to catch that reaction before it fires. How to stay yourself in the moment that tests you. How to start choosing instead of just absorbing. The link is in the description. It's free, it's live, and you can come exactly as you are with no preparation, no homework, and no requirements. Environment to be anywhere other than where you actually are right now. Come this Saturday. You've been doing this without an instruction manual long enough. I'm Jerry S. Lin, and I'll see you there.
