Why You Choose Narcissists and Push Away the Good Ones

Jerry Lin explains why people repeatedly choose narcissistic partners and reject healthy ones: your nervous system learned to recognize chaos as love. Growing up around emotional unpredictability trains your body to feel comfortable with volatility and uncomfortable with stability, making red flags feel like chemistry. Breaking the pattern requires retraining your nervous system, not just choosing differently.

So today's question is, why do I attract narcissists or toxic people? Oh, this is a good one. I get this one a lot. Well, the truth no one explains is you're not attracting toxic people because you're weak or broken. You're attracting them because your nervous system recognizes familiar patterns. In this video, I'm gonna break down why chaos feels like connection, why red flags feel like chemistry and why healthy people feel uncomfortable. Drop a comment if this hits and join the early access list to stay updated. So let's talk about one of the biggest questions people ask me today. Why do I keep attracting narcissists or toxic people? And why do I fall for a person who hurts me? Why do I ignore the red flags? Why do I mistake chaos for chemistry? And why do I lose myself? In the relationship. Lastly, why do I push away the people who are good for me? So let's break this down. It's not what you think. So you're not attracting toxic people because you're weak. You're not attracting narcissists because you're broken. You're not asking for it. You're not cursed. You're not unlucky. You're just patterned. Your nervous system is making relationship decisions before your mind even knows what's happening. Attraction is not a mental choice. That's the funny thing. It's a survival-based recognition system. Your body chooses what feels familiar, not what feels healthy. And this is why the same type of person keeps showing up, right? Because your body is used to that. It's what's familiar. And if you grew up around unpredictability, emotional inconsistency, caretaking chaos, dismissal, people with big personalities, emotional highs and lows, someone who needed all the attention, someone who punished boundaries, walking on eggshells, then your body learned this is what love feels like. Not healthy love, not secure love, not safe love, just familiar. So as an adult, when someone is stable, they feel boring. When someone is consistent, you get suspicious. When someone is calm, you think something is wrong. When someone respects your boundaries, you get uncomfortable. So when someone is emotionally available, your body freezes or backs away, and your body doesn't even choose love. It chooses what feels like home, even if home was chaos. So it's always looking for the familiar. And so that's why narcissists feel magnetic, right? Narcissists and toxic people activate that exact same nervous system pattern you grew up around. It's intensity, charm, confidence, chaos, high winds, high highs and low lows, emotionally unpredictable. You feeling like you need to earn love. You're trying to fix them. You're being the caretaker. You're walking on eggshells. You're never knowing which version you'll get today and your body thinks, "Ah, this feels familiar. This feels like home. This must be love." It's not love. It's emotional equivalent of déjà vu. Chemistry is just your nervous systems recognizing a pattern it knows. And the dangerous moment that no one ever talks about is people think toxic relationships happen because you ignored red flags. You're too kind. You have low self-esteem. You're too empathetic. You attract broken people. No, none of that is true, because here's the truth: your nervous system is making decisions in the first 5 seconds of meeting someone. That's 5 seconds. In that tiny window, your system checks: familiar? Yes. Then it must be love. Your body picks up the patterns before your mind even picks the partner, and that's the trap, and that's why you can't leave. That's why you go back. You ever wonder why you can't walk away even when you know they're bad for you? Because your nervous system interprets their withdrawal as a threat. You're not attached to the person, you're attached to the pattern. The cycle doesn't feel good, it feels familiar. And familiar feels safe to a body that's never felt actual safety. So here's the part nobody teaches you. You don't break this pattern by choosing different people. You break this pattern by changing the part of you that chooses them in the first place. And that happens in your body, not in your mind. There's a way to shift the nervous system so that the red flags lose their pull and real love finally feels safe. And I'll be sharing more about that soon. If any of this hits you, comment "This is me" down below. Your comments help push this to someone who desperately needs to hear this today. And trust me, a lot of people do. And if this hits you anywhere in your body, join the early access list. Something important is coming. And go ahead and leave in the comments if you have a question, and I'll add it to my list. Sribodh Dad.
