Why you need to control everything (REPLAY) - Live Saturday Reset with Jerry S Lin

Jerry Lin explains the control reflex, a gut-brain reaction that fires within five seconds when we feel unsafe. He teaches the REWIRE method to catch and reprogram it, and recommends daily reps like checking in with your body three times a day to rewire automatic reactions.

Welcome in, welcome in. All right, let's go ahead and get started. See, this morning I picked up my phone, I sat with it in my hand, just held it, and I had one thought: should I send her a Happy Mother's Day message tomorrow? See, now that sounds like a simple question, and It wasn't because my ex has been cutting me off from the kids for over 15 months now. The moment I started dating again, access got really complicated. Calls and texts don't get returned. Everything turned into a negotiation or silence like I'm talking to myself. 15 months thus far. I knew the answer was No, but my body didn't care. My gut was already composing the text, my hand still hovering, and that gap between what I knew and what my body wanted to do, that is what we're talking about today. So welcome to the Reset Room. This is the Saturday Reset. I'm Jerry Lin, the Human Systems Engineer. And this is the 5 Second Reflex community. We show up every Saturday for one reason: you have more choices than you think. See, most people just can't access them because their reflex fires before they know a choice existed. Today's topic: why you need to control everything. And why that need is costing you more than you know. Go ahead and drop in the comments right now where you're joining us from. As— are you on the VIP Zoom call or YouTube, TikTok, Facebook? City, state, country? Let's see who's in the room today. I see San Jose. Brisbane, Australia. Wow, welcome, welcome. What time is it there right now? Geez. Vallejo, Austin, New York, Houston. Wow, all the way from Alaska. Good, good. See, you chose to be here. That's already a different rep than most people took this morning. Let's get into this. Let me take you back to this morning. See, tomorrow is Mother's Day. I'm sitting here with my phone, and in my chest, that familiar pull. See, I was married for 23 years. She was a mom for 22 years. Do something. Send something. Make something happen. See, here's the full picture. After I started dating again after the divorce, my ex ran what I call— what I can really only describe as a parental alienation playbook. She limited the access to the kids, controlled the narrative with all my friends and family, managed the kids' perceptions. See, if she controls that story, she doesn't lose. It's not her fault. And here's where it gets honest, because I pushed hard through the divorce too. Fast decisions, decisive moves. I told myself it was clarity, but if I'm being real with you, I was doing the same thing. I was trying to control an outcome I was never going to control. See, two people, both gripping the wheel, both convinced they were the sane one, the right one, the one who needed to be behind the wheel, while neither of us were driving anywhere good. And here's where I need you to see yourself in this. Because this story isn't about divorce. This is a story about what happens when human beings feel unsafe. We grip. Mothers who overparent, grip. Partners who check phones, grip. People who can't say no, also a grip. People who can only say no, also a grip. See, the shape is different, the source is identical. So this morning I asked myself the real question. Not should I send this text, but what do I think sending this text will make happen? And the answer was nothing. Absolutely nothing. See, there's no text that fixes what's broken over there. There's no move that gives me back what was taken. The only thing the text would give me is the feeling of having done something, and that feeling, that's not control. That's an illusion of it. Okay, I want to teach you something that changes how you see every reaction you have. You don't have one brain, you actually have three. Your head brain, the thinker, logic, analysis, plans. This is the one you think is running the show. It might be only about 10% of the time. See, the head brain wants to calculate, it wants options, it wants, if I do this, then that happens. And then you have your heart brain, the feeler, the connection, belonging, safety in relationships. This one is asking, am I loved? Am I included? Do the people I care about still see me as good? See, on Mother's Day, my heart brain was asking, will my kids think I'm a bad person? Will she think I'm a bad person if I say nothing? And then there's the gut brain, the autopilot, the survival habit reflex. The gut brain doesn't negotiate, it just runs scenarios. It fires, and in 5 seconds before your head has a vote, before your heart can feel it through, your body gets gigabytes of information every second, and your conscious mind can only process about 10 bits of it. See, that's a 100 million times difference in data and your actual processing speed with the mind. See, that gap is where your autopilot lives. That's where the reflex lives. That's where control lives. And here's the part nobody tells you. Your gut brain doesn't know it's 2026. It's running wiring from the last time you were scared. See, that wiring comes from 4 places. First, a core belief, something you hold on as true about the world. Usually something like, "If I don't manage this, it falls apart." The second is a core value, something you protect no matter the cost. When it gets violated, your gut fires instantly. The third, an emotional imprint. See, some people call it trauma, a moment when you learn that losing control had consequences. Maybe as a kid, maybe it was as a past relationship. Your gut still remembers even if your head forgot. 'Cause your body keeps the score. And fourth, your core identity. It's who you think you are. You are a good husband or a bad wife. You are a strong woman or a weak man. You always win or you're always a loser. See, this morning all three brains were active for one text message. That's three brains all firing at once toward one decision. And that push and pull, it confuses you. You don't have alignment. And what we want is to figure out how we can get full alignment between your head brain, your heart brain, and your gut brain. And that's what authenticity is. All right, so this is your 5-second reflex. Drop in the comments which brain takes over in a tense moment. One word: head, heart, or gut. Go ahead and type it in the chat. Head, heart, or gut. Okay, I'm seeing a lot of gut, some heart, a few heads. All right. I see you overthinkers out there. Your head's spinning so hard it becomes hard or becomes the avoidance. That's the gut. And that gut is running your head. We're gonna talk about that. When I say 5-second reflex, that's your body registers a stimulus and it begins reacting before your conscious mind has an idea of what happened. It's in milliseconds! But the full behavioral pattern, the triggers to the response, it runs in roughly 5 seconds. See, 5 seconds is where your gut brain casts its vote. 5 seconds is where your autopilot decides, and most people miss it entirely. Because blurry became normal. Here's how the control reflex runs. Something feels uncertain, out of your hands, and then it may be your chest tightens, your shoulders go up, and your breathing gets shallow. And then the urge— send, call, Fix, respond, correct, manage, get angry. You act, you get brief relief, then nothing changes or it gets worse and the loop starts again and again. Now, most personal development tells you pause before you react. Great advice, but almost impossible to follow because your gut doesn't take directions like that. You can't think your way out of a reflex that fired before you knew you were thinking. What actually works is different. You don't fight the reflex, you don't suppress it, you catch it and you give it a new rep. That's the REWIRE method. R, recognize. Catch the trigger the moment it fires. Then E, Engage. Find it in your body. Where does it feel like physically? All right, then we go to W, which is witness. Watch your usual responses without judgment. Just notice them. All right, then go to I, interrupt. One breath. One slightly different choice. All right, and then to R, reflect. Notice what shifted, even if it shifted just barely. And then lastly, E for encode. Repeat it until it becomes the new default. See, that is the rewire technique. And this morning I recognized the urge that I felt in my chest. I watched myself about to reach for the phone and I took one breath and I put that phone down. See, one rep. That's how the new reflex gets built. One rep at a time. Now finish this sentence in the comments. My reflex shows up most when— go ahead, one sentence, don't overthink it. Your gut already knows. Go ahead and type it in. My control reflex shows up most when— when my mom makes a comment. Okay, when my teenager won't talk to me. Yes, that is the control reflex disguised as parenting. What is this? When I feel a conversation going sideways. All right, that's noticing the beginning of the rewire. When my partner doesn't trust me. All right. When my mom criticizes me. All right. Okay. Here's the thing about rewiring. Information doesn't do it. Motivation doesn't do it. You can listen to this every Saturday for 6 months and nothing changes if you don't take a rep. The gap between knowing and doing has one bridge, and that's reps. Practice doesn't make perfect. Practice makes— what? Permanent. See, the only question is, what have you unconsciously been practicing every time that trigger fires? See, every time you reach for the phone when you're anxious, That's a rep. Every time you try to manage a conversation going sideways, that's a rep. Every time you say yes because you can't handle someone being disappointed, rep. You've been training your gut. The question is, training it towards what? Now here's how you build a new reflex without willpower. You attach it to something your gut already automatically does. We call this the stack. So morning coffee, one breath, and a body scan. Traffic stop, notice the tension and release it. Before a hard conversation, 3 breath pattern interrupt.
You don't need motivation.
You just need the first rep attached to something that already happens. Which is exactly where we're going right now. I wanna take you through something.
If you're somewhere where you can close your eyes, let's go.
Go ahead and find a comfortable position.
If you can close your eyes, do so, and take a slow breath in through your nose and out through your mouth. One One more time. This time, let your shoulders drop.
And exhale. Ha.
There is nothing to fix right now. Nothing to manage. Nothing to send. You're here. And here is exactly enough. I want you to bring to mind the thing you've been trying to control. Don't reach for it, just let it surface.
It's all Already there.
Now notice, where do you feel it in your body? Chest, stomach, jaw, the back of your neck. Don't try to make it go away. Just find it and put your awareness on it. Like a warm hand. Good, you found it. Now ask yourself gently, what are you afraid will happen if you let go? Don't answer with your head. Feel the answer. It lives somewhere in that tension you just located. Now I want you to go back, not far, just to the first time you remember feeling this way. That same grip, that same urgency. When did you first learn that you needed to hold on? Picture that younger version of you. They were doing the best they knew how to do. They learned, "If I don't manage this, something bad happens. If I let go, I lose." See, that wiring made sense back then. It kept ya safe. But what I wanna tell you is something different. I want you to really let this land. That version of you is not the one making decisions anymore, unless we let 'em. You are an adult in the room now. You get to choose. Bring your attention back to that area in your body where you felt the grip. This time I want you to imagine you could Breathe directly into it, in through the nose, and breathe right into that spot. And as you exhale, ha, not forcing, not pushing, just loosening one finger of the grip. You don't have to let go of everything, just one finger. Notice what shifts, even slightly, even barely. That shift, that's It's the new reflex taking its first breath. I want you to see yourself clearly in the next moment this trigger fires. You feel the familiar pull, the grip beginning, and instead of moving toward the control, you take one breath, shh, ahh. You find the feeling in your body. You witness it. You choose. Do you see the version of you, the one who knows they have a choice? This is who you are becoming. This is who you already are. When your nervous system knows it's safe. Take one more deep breath. Now we're going to lock this in and breathe out. Ah, your nervous system You just got a signal.
This moment matters.
Every time you feel the grip try to come back, remember this clap. I want you to hold that feeling, this space, the loosened grip, the version of you who knows they have options.
One breath.
Ah, one finger off the grip, one rep. Okay, eyes open and welcome back.
Because your nervous system doesn't just learn through insight, It learns through your body. And we're going to use the sound to anchor what just shifted. And all right, before I send you off, two things. First, drop in the comment what just shifted. I read every single one, even on the replay, even if you're watching this 6 months from now. Go ahead and drop it in the comments. What landed? What's your one rep this week to stop that control? All right, so remember to go and set up your reps on your rep calendar— calendars, right? So for those of you who've come before, you know every day we practice 3 times per day, once in the morning, once in the afternoon, and once at night. Set your alarms on your phones to remember to take a REP. And the REPs are normally, "How am I feeling right now?" 30 seconds. And, "What does my body need right now?" Another 30 seconds. That quick. This week, what I like you to do is on Monday once and once on Friday— so that's Monday and Friday— go ahead on any of the 3 reps, just stop and think about what you were trying to control that day and write it down, right?
Notice it.
Be part of the rewire, right? Notice it. Witness what's happening and where you feel it in your body. Second, I'd like you to think about one person in your life who needs this. Not someone you wanna fix, not someone you send this to with a hidden message. Someone who is gripping something that's costing them. Someone who deserves to see themselves more clearly. Share this with them. Tag them in the comments. Send them the link. See, tell them this community is for people who are ready to see things differently. And next Saturday, we go deeper. I'm gonna show you exactly what happens in the nervous system when you finally stop fighting the reflex and start working with it. It's one of the most powerful sessions I've ever run. I've got some new transformations you do not want to miss. So bring someone. All right, before we go, we say the pledge. All right, if you've been here before, you know it. If you're new, follow along and mean it. So we wake up. Come on, say this with me, everyone. We wake up. We choose, and we bring everyone we love with us. Same time, new rep, bring someone. I'm Jerry Lin. This is the 5 Second Reflex, and you just chose differently. I'll see you next Saturday.
I choose this life, I choose this life. I got head, I got alignment, alignment. The reflex, the 5x, the 5x.
