You did everything right, so why do you still feel like this?

Jerry S. Lin grew up in a Taiwanese-American household where sacrifice meant love, developing an automatic reflex to swallow hardship and keep pushing. It worked for decades, earning him success in smart-city and automotive systems, but left him chronically exhausted and empty. He shares a 5-second signal check: pause, breathe, and ask your gut what you actually want right now.

You did everything right, so why does it still feel like this? You did the work, you showed up when you didn't want to, you pushed when it was hard, you swallowed it again and again, and you put your head down and you kept going. And you did what you were told: work hard, be grateful, don't complain. That means eat bitterness. That's what my dad called it. Swallow the hard things, That's how you become someone. I grew up hearing that. See, my parents said it the way other people say good morning. And I believed it. 40 years I believed it was until I was standing at what should have been the peak of everything I had worked for. And I felt nothing. Not proud, not satisfied, not relieved, nothing. And I thought, "Is this it?" If you ever had that thought even once, Stay with me. I'm Jerry S. Lin, the Human Systems Engineer. I grew up in a Taiwanese American household, one foot in a culture that said sacrifice is love, endurance, strength. Your worth is what you produce. The other foot in a country that says you can be anything, just hustle harder. The American Dream. It's real if you work for it. See, both running different directions. For decades, I built systems that ran smart cities, IoT sensors in data centers, automotive networks across multiple countries, campuses and universities. I did what achievement looks like. And then my body stopped. Not a thought, not a feeling, a physical event. And in that quiet that followed, I finally heard a signal I had been overriding my entire life. See, this channel exists because of what I found out on the other side of that. Not more hustle, not more willpower, a different system entirely. And here's exactly what I'm going to show you today. Why the tsuku, or eat bitterness and keep going program, however well intended, is running in your body right now as an automatic reflex. Why knowing that isn't enough to change it, and one specific moment that begins The process, not a mindset shift, not a therapy insight, a trained 5-second interruption. So let's go. Here's the thing about growing up in a high expectation household. Doesn't matter if you were an Asian, an immigrant, working class, or first gen, or just a family that survived hard things. The message was the same: produce, perform, persist. Your worth is visible. It shows in your grades, in your job titles, in your income, in your silence. When things get hard. Achievement isn't just what you do in the wiring you grew up in, it's what you are. And your gut brain, the oldest, fastest part of you, recorded that code before you had any words for it. Not as a belief, as a program. So every time you achieve something— connection, approval, safety— every time you're rested— guilt, the feeling of Anxiety, the feeling of falling behind. Every time you wanted something for yourself, your quick internal check is, is this allowed? That's not a character flaw. That is a trained reflex. And the reason it's still running is simple. Practice makes permanent. Not perfect, permanent. You practice producing, got very good at it. And the problem is surviving and actually living are two completely different programs. And nobody handed you the second one. See, let me describe something and you tell me if this sounds familiar. Mid-afternoon or maybe late at night or the moment the weekend finally goes quiet. There's a feeling. Not dramatic, not a crisis, just flat. Is this it? I should feel good about this, but I don't. Feeling a subtle wrongness that you can't name and you just push it away because what are you gonna do with it? You check the phone, pour a drink, go on to the next task. Cuz here's what I want you to hear. That feeling isn't weakness. That's not ingratitude. That is your gut sending you a signal. The same gut that has been running and producing and persisting that program since you were a little kid. It's now sending you a different message. It's saying this pattern isn't working anymore. Not loudly, not dramatically, just a quiet, persistent signal. And every time you override it, you spend more energy suppressing the signal than the signal itself would have cost you to hear. That's a significant part of why you're exhausted, not just the work, the constant suppression. Here's the first move, and it's simple, not easy, simple. I call it the signal check. Once a day and every time this week, when that flat feeling or that "not this again" arrives, instead of pushing it away, stop, both feet flat on the floor, one breath in through the nose, hold to the count of 3, out through the mouth, and ask your gut, not your head, one question: What is the one thing I actually want right now? Not what should I want, not what would make everyone comfortable, not what the program says is allowed. Just what do you want? You don't have to act on it. You don't have to tell anyone. You just have to hear it. Because here's the truth that took me 40 years to find. You already know what to do. The problem isn't information. The problem isn't character. The problem isn't effort. The problem is that your body has been trained to override the signal before your conscious mind even had a chance to hear it. And that's the 5-second reflex working against you, and it can be retrained to work for you. That training begins with one signal heard, not overwritten. See, what's the one signal you keep overriding? That quiet not this that you push away before you let yourself feel it? Drop it in the comments. You don't have to explain it, just name it. If this lands, the Saturday Reset Room is where you go deeper. Live free every Saturday morning, 5sr.org, link in the description. And if you want to understand exactly why your body keeps overriding the signals, watch the next video. It's the piece most people are completely missing.
