Your Shame Didn’t Start With You

A son feels shame when his mother with Alzheimer's doesn't recognize him, revealing a pattern in Asian families where love requires sacrifice and approval feels essential. Conditional love teaches children to suppress emotions and prioritize family reputation, programming the nervous system to collapse when feelings finally surface. You can honor your parents while learning to process emotions safely and break the cycle.

I want to tell you about a moment someone shared with me. His mom has Alzheimer's. Some days she doesn't recognize him, so he plays a character, a taxi driver or Uber driver, just to calm her down. He chats with her, makes her laugh, and at the end he always asks, "Who's your favorite son?" just to hear his own name. And one time she didn't answer. She looked out the window, paused, and he told me he felt it instantly. Not just grief, but shame. Like somehow her not recognizing him was his fault. Like he had failed her. That's not rational. He knows it's not rational, but rational has nothing to do with it. Because for those of us raised in homes where a parent's approval was oxygen, the absence of that approval doesn't just feel like rejection, it feels like disappearing. In most Asian families, love is expressed through sacrifice, through provision, through giving up your own needs so your children have more. And that is real love. I'm not criticizing your parents here, but here's what that love can accidentally teach the child's body: love is earned, approval is conditional, and when I make a mistake, I don't just lose the moment, I lose the relationship. So xiaosun, or filial piety, is at its core about gratitude and honor. But the way it transmits to a child's nervous system can sometimes land as: your job is to not disappoint, your emotions are secondary to the family's face. "Be a shuola!" All right, stop talking, hold it in. That's what that means. So you learn to suppress, to perform calm, to swallow the reaction. And then something happens, maybe at 43, maybe at 38, and everything that got swallowed comes out sideways on the wrong person at the wrong time. And then the shame fires. Not just I overreacted, but I have dishonored everyone who gave anything for me to be here. See, that's not a small feeling. That's a full-body identity collapse. Your parents were not wrong to value honor. Your culture is not wrong for valuing collective harmony. Those are real values with real wisdom. But wisdom and nervous system programming are not the same thing. The value honor your family, the programming your emotions are dangerous, one is a principle, the other is a misfire. You can hold Xiao Sun and learn to process your emotions safely. You can honor your parents and stop running until you explode. Those are not opposites. Your parents wanted you to have a good life, a life where you're not trapped in the same cycles they were. The most honoring thing you can do is to break the chain, not by rejecting where you came from, but by learning what they never got to learn. This work hits different for us because the shame isn't just personal, it's generational. Which means when you do this work, you're not just doing it for yourself, you're doing it for your kids, you're doing it for the version of your parents who never had access to any of this. See, every Saturday in the Reset Room, we practice this together, free Live, no performance required. Comment reset and I'll send you the link. One breath, one choice, one life with aliveness.
