Marene Allison mentored Cody Rivers after he reached out for career advice. She discovered his father was her former classmate, which deepened their connection. Allison stresses that cybersecurity professionals are usually willing to help if you ask.
I'm just gonna brag a little on Cody. Cody didn't know that his father and I were classmates, and he would— Cody is so active in trying to grow in the cybersecurity space that he actually approached me because he saw me as a CISO leader, and he wanted me to do some career counseling with him. And at some point, he, like, I was talking to his father and he said, oh yeah, my son Cody. And I'm like, Cody Rivers is your son? And he goes, yeah, do you know him? And I said, yeah, I'm going to talk to him next Tuesday. I'm mentoring him. And that, that's one of the things I will tell people is just reach out because everybody wants to help everybody else. That's a great point.
