Chris Griffin, a penetration tester, unlocked a glass door with a can of compressed air in a viral 12-second video. The stunt sparked debate: some found it funny, others worried it teaches criminals how to bypass security sensors. It raises the question of how much you can safely show when demonstrating physical security flaws.
So Aaron, we recently had a 12-second video go viral. We're going to play it right now. And I want people to understand what's happening in this video, what's going on here. So can you take us back to the beginning?
So, uh, Chris Griffin goes by Griff is our lead penetration tester. This is a video of him. He's using canned air through a glass door trip, a sensor that basically unlocks the door for people coming out. I think the funniest comment I saw is like, This is the freshest smelling criminal in the entire office. And I think the person thought that they were spraying deodorant.
We also received a lot of comments that are kind of the other, other direction, right? They're not so funny and they're saying like, hey, thanks for showing all the criminals how to do this kind of thing. What's the situation there?
Ultimately, we're showing these things to say, hey, there's some easy things that may require some rewiring and moving things around. But if you don't know that these things are problematic, you may not have a chance to make it safer.
