Adam Bensman identifies seven traits that disqualify someone from roofing sales: needing instant gratification, high sensitivity, poor emotional regulation, skipping personal development, having an unsupportive partner, struggling under pressure, or mismanaging money. He frames the work as emotionally demanding and rewarding only for those committed to growth.

Roofing sales is not for everyone. In this video, I'm going to share with you the seven telltale signs that you are not cut out for roofing sales. The same message applies if you are hiring salespeople. Maybe you want to make an offer or maybe you've already hired them. Well, I hope to help you avoid the very costly, very emotionally draining process of investing in someone or investing in a company if you're a roofing salesperson or soon to be roofing salesperson. So hope this video helps. This video is inspired by the way, from a recent post in the Reddit Roofing Sales Group. There was a thread that was started by someone who's interested in the field and they said, hey, I want to get into roofing sales. You know, what does this look like? How much money can I make? And I was blown away at how many people were like roofing sales is a gimmick. Hardly anyone makes any money. You'll work really hard, never get paid. And although it's sad that there are a lot of people that have been screwed by really scuzzy roofing company owners and it's no secret that the roofing company is poisoned by by corruption and greed, I just don't think those claims are truthful. And in this video I'm going to be sharing what I think is like the make or break character traits of who just shouldn't be in the industry and shouldn't be in roofing sales. So my name is Adam Bensman. Welcome or welcome back. I can't wait to jump into this video. So let's rock and roll. Roofing sales is personal development in disguise and the reward for growth is life changing. I hope my content helps you create a richer life and bank account. All right, telltale sign number one that you are not cut out for roofing sales. If you thrive on instant gratification. This isn't for you. In roofing sales, delayed gratification is the name of the game because you'll go out. You'll either knock doors if you're in charge of it, or you'll be running sales appointments and the time delay from the victory of closing a deal and getting paid. Depending on the company and a comp schedule, you your payments and commissions are going to be delayed weeks and sometimes even a few months from when you make a sale. And there are days, there are weeks that you'll be out grinding with absolutely nothing to show for it. This industry is not for the faint of heart. That's why in my book, the roofing sales Survival guide. I share that my observational experience is about 2 out of 3. So 66% of roofing salespeople quit or get fired in their first month and a lot of them are jumping in and just shouldn't. So I hope to help change that with this video. So, again, if you're into instant gratification, don't expect it. You need to be comfortable with delayed gratification for this to work for you. Number two reason that you're not cut out for roofing sales is if you're a highly sensitive person. Now, I know that this might be offensive, especially in today's overly sensitive world, but if you're a very sensitive person and you get offended easily, like, sorry, avoid it like the plague, run now. Because you, you will deal with people in a way you probably never dealt with them before. And this is one of the reasons, by the way, that like law enforcement officers do really well in roofing sales because they've dealt with scenarios that are highly uncomfortable many times before, people calling them names. And if you're out in people's homes, either soliciting door to door or running appointments, people unlock their absolute crazy in their home. And for good reason. I don't judge them for it. It's your home, it's your castle. So when things go wrong in someone's home, they, they're going to behave in a way that they wouldn't if they were returning a shirt that didn't fit to Kohl's, we'll put it that way. So you'll be called names, you'll be beat down emotionally, similar to like how a law enforcement officer is going to deal with. So if you're a highly sensitive person, don't do this. But what I will say is that in this industry, because I share this story actually in my book, the Roofing Sales Survival Guide, how to Beat the Odds, Overcome Yourself and Win Big. But you can get a free copy of my free training center, by the way, it's in the link in the description or adamsfreestuff.com and if you're an audible person, grab it on Audible or Amazon. But I share in there that I was a highly sensitive person prior to getting into roofing sales. I didn't want to upset anybody. I played the peacekeeper role as my inner demon. You'll see more in the book, but it took a lot, a lot for me to really lean into that discomfort and do what I needed to do to basically face being miserable and uncomfortable all day. So if you're sensitive Be warned, this isn't for you unless you're willing to really, really le into it and move through personally. Number three, telltale sign that you are not cut out for roofing sales is if you have poor emotional regulation. Now, what do I mean by poor emotional regulation? If you're someone that wears your emotions on your sleeve, and if you have a bad day, you're one of the few. If I'm having a bad day, then everybody's going to know about it. No, no, you can't do that here. You're going to have bad days. You're going to have a lot of bad days. This. I literally open up my book, by the way, saying roofing sales and is like an emotional roller. It's like strapping yourself into a roller coaster with a faulty switchboard. Okay, I'm just going to read this to you because this is quite possibly like the description of roofing sales. So let's begin. A life in roofing sales is like strapping yourself to a roller coaster with a faulty switchboard. You don't know if you're going to be rocketed backwards off the starting line, stall upside down, or throw your arms up with glee as the G forces glue you to the seat as you rip through the banked corner. And that's why it's so thrilling, addicting, and fun. The love hate relationship with our work is unpredictable, uncertain, and most definitely not consistent or, excuse me, or stable. A life in roofing sales is definitely not for everybody. For those of us who bet on ourselves, take the leap and obsess about taking control of our lives, improving what we're capable of, it is life changing, both personally and financially. So anyway, that is a very good description of what roofing sales is all about. So if you have poor emotional regulation, you have that bad day and you show up at someone's house and you, you have a grumpy face or you're rude to someone, you're not going to make sales. If you have poor emotional regulation and you deal with someone screaming at you and you raise your voice back, it's not going to work. You need to be able to stay calm. You need to be able to check your personal life and your professional life, because I promise you, this isn't an if, it's when. Promise you you're going to have things that happen in your personal life, like a breakup, a fight with your partner, a family member who gets cancer, and you will carry that to work with you. And if you can't compartmentalize and separate these and you're going to be carrying your personal baggage to work and be impacted in a way professionally you've probably never had to deal with before. And it's challenging, very, very challenging. So you're probably not cut out for it. Number four reason that you're likely not a good fit for roofing sales is if you are not obsessed with personal development. And I mean this obsessed with personal development. In my book I say that roofing sales is personal development in disguise. And many people, when they read that quote, they reach out to me. In fact, I had a gentleman who sent me a picture, he got a placard like a quote card for his office that said roofing sales, personal development disguise. And it's hanging in their war room, their sales room in their office. If you are someone who is not like totally addicted to how do I get better personally, how do I get better professionally? Where you look forward to challenges and opportunity and being uncomfortable, like by design, just run. Because if you're afraid of that, this will not be a good fit. The challenges that you face, the inner demons that you face will, will absolutely crush you. You will hate your job, you will hate your life, and you will quit so soon that the time that you invested in this industry trying to make it work will likely drive you into a deeper hole of financial worry. So on the flip side, if you are obsessed with personal and professional development, this could be the life changing and most rewarding and fun and exhilarating way to make a living. Because when I say roofing sales is personal development disguise, that means like as you grow as an individual personally, your income follows. You get better at time management, conflict resolution, communication. As you level up, your income will follow. Number five, telltale sign that you are not cut out for roofing sales is very simple. If your spouse or significant other does not support you, it won't work. This is a very taxing business. Your phone will ring off the hook. It will ring seven days a week, it will buzz seven days a week. Everything feels like an emergency. It is a high stress, high stakes job. But in order to achieve uncommon results, which is an income that is not typical, you have to be willing to deal with non typical things. And there's a saying, and I don't know who I can quote this to, but you will only be as successful as your spouse will allow you to be or your significant other. So you'll only be as successful as your spouse or significant other will allow you to be. And if your spouse isn't on board, it ain't going to work, the pressures at home and that seed of doubt in your ear, whispering that you shouldn't be doing this and you're not cut out for this will absolutely ruin you. I talk about this in the book, by the way, as well, that. That once the seed of doubt is planted in watered, there's no stopping it. Number six, telltale sign that you're not cut out for roofing sales is that you don't thrive under pressure. You have to be able to thrive under pressure. If you don't thrive under pressure, if you're someone who, like, gets deer in the headlights and panics under pressure, don't. Don't do this. Because the amount of times that you will feel put on the spot, asked questions you don't know the answer to, face scenarios or situations that are both uncomfortable or confrontational is, like, unexplainable. It will happen all the time. You will have pressure to make sales, to make ends meet. You will have pressure from homeowners. You will have pressure at work. You'll have pressure. Pressure times that you feel like you're doing nothing but failing. And it wasn't until my wife, her name's Sheena, and she runs RSRA with me, she was out of town. I was sitting in a sauna, and I was like, gosh, I look back, I realized, like, all of my biggest accomplishments in life were when I was under pressure. And now even in today's time, like, she even said to me, she's like, man, whenever things are going really well, you just, like, throw something on top. I was like, yeah, like, I'm in. I'm kind of. I love chaos. I love pressure. I thrive on it. So if pressure. If you're like. If you're hearing this and you're like, yeah, like, gosh, I love thriving under pressure. If you're an athlete and you, like, do better when you're up against the clock, this industry you'll do well at. But if you don't, run for the hills. All right, we're going to wrap up on number seven. Telltale sign that roofing sales is not. You're not cut out for it is if you cannot manage your money. Your cash flow in this business goes up and down. There are seasonal swings. You'll have your best month followed by your worst month. It's just how it goes. And if you're in the northern market, you can go months without earning an income. So you'll be making all this money for eight, nine months a year, and then a few months having to stretch your money that you've earned. And it was mind blowing to me. I'd see some guys, especially in the Minnesota market, make like a quarter million dollars in a year and then they don't manage it well. They blow it all. They buy boats, they go out to the club, they end up with substance abuse problems or a little overexcitement on the partying scene and they don't manage their money well. And then they come to the table to start the next season broke. I'm like, how did you, how are you broke? You made a quarter million dollars the year before. So you have to be able to be conscientious of that fluctuation in your income. Unlike a traditional job where you can expect a traditional paycheck the same amount every week, it just doesn't happen in roofing sales. So you have to be good or comfortable learning how to manage your money. Now what did I miss? Drop a comment below and share it with me because I'm sure that I'm going to have folks tuning in that are like, hey, you missed this one or you missed this one. And I know I did, I'm sure I did. These are the top seven that came up to me and I want to end on this. It is so important to be set up with the right company. A lot of folks draw a conclusion about the roofing industry because sadly they started selling for a company who was a terrible company. They didn't have a good go on round one. So anyway, make sure you're with the right company. I've done videos to help share. In fact, I'm going to put a link to that right at the end of this one to help you line up with the right company. And another one on the red flags that you're selling with the wrong company. But for many of you, maybe you're, you're new, maybe you're looking to make a switch. There's a link in the description right now that if you fill it out this form, it'll actually submit inside our private community in the roofing and solar form lines. And if any of our members are interested in hiring you, they'll reach out. So it's another way to get connected with good people. Thanks for joining me in this video.
