Cut-Throat Competition? Beat Other Roofers

Adam Bensman (the Roof Strategist) addresses demoralized roofing salespeople facing intense local competition, arguing that even in saturated markets you can win by finding the homeowners who haven’t chosen a roofer, making them feel understood, and using his sales approach (SLAP/slab formula). He illustrates this with personal anecdotes (a 2011 Madison, WI hailstorm deal and his cousin Jason) and success stories from trainees, and promotes his book, "The Roofing Sales Survival Guide," plus free training resources.

Your motivation is dwindling because you are swimming in a shark infested sea of other roofing companies. And the neighborhoods you pull into, there's yard sign after yard sign after yard sign. There's people that will do it cheaper. There's companies that will eat the deductible. You look over your shoulder, new roofing company, new roofing company popping up left and right. And this competition is killing your confidence and destroying your motivation. And at this point, you might be questioning, is this industry even worth it? Do I even have a chance? Should I even be doing this? How do I survive? Well, if that's you, then this video is for you. It's not you, but you have someone on your team who's going through this. You know the type. They're like, right on that make or break point. Be a hero and share this video with them. Let's rock and roll. Adam Benson here, the roof strategist. And everything that I do is designed to help you and your team smash your income goal and give every customer an amazing experience. And we're in. Order to smash your income goal, you need to be able to have everything ticking right up here in your mindset. And that's why I wrote my book called the Roofing Sales Survival Guide, which is available now. Beat the odds, overcome yourself and win big. This book is not a book about roofing sales. No, not at all. It's about the life in roofing sales. The things that no one talks about, things you're not going to see in Internet forums and you're not going to see being spoken from on stages. It's a book to help you survive in this industry, tackling up here and in here, your mind and your heart in order to survive and then thrive. It's a book that I wrote for new people, seasoned veterans and even owners. So if you're someone that is maybe struggling with motivation, you just got into it and you're wondering, how am I going to make this thing work? This is a hard job. Or maybe you're a seasoned veteran. It was really great for a while. And now, like, I don't know, should I be doing this? This book's for you. The reason that I did today's video is because I was writing in the books, I suddenly realized how competitive roofing sales was. In the inner dialogue I had of, like, am I going to make it? Do I even stand a chance? If everyone's going to be swimming after these same people, why bother? It's just like constant competition. If that's you Maybe the book's a good read. Again. Available on Kindle Audible and available on Amazon, where you can order a print copy. I want to share a story with you. My story. 2011. My first hailstorm that I worked was in Madison, Wisconsin. Madison, Wisconsin, by the way, at this point got a record hailstorm that brought in contractors from all over the country. Country due to the size and magnitude of this hailstorm. So if you worked that storm, you probably know that neighborhood. Middleton got smoked pretty good. As you know, when you're out trying to find that neighborhood, you're just driving around sometimes and you're like, wow, I didn't even know this neighborhood existed. You pull in and you're like, this is going to be the one. There's like, yard sign, yard sign, yard sign, yard sign, yard sign. It's like, why would I even bother? Everyone's been through here. And if there's not a yard sign in the yard, then chances are they at least talk to a million roofers because there's a million companies in here. And then I say, okay, well, maybe the grass will be greener in the next neighborhood. So I threw my Toyota Tacoma in reverse, I'm on five speed manual and backed out of this driveway cruise into that neighborhood. It was the same thing. See, see, see of roofing signs everywhere. I was like, gosh, there's no shot that I have. I was feeling really discouraged. I'm like, I'm the new guy. Why would anyone even go with me? There's no chance here. I had to have a pep talk with myself. I pulled over, parked my truck and just sitting there like, man, what do I do? Everyone's talked to somebody. Everyone has a roofer. And I just decided, you know what sales is like, relationships. Not everyone's a good fit for everybody. Not everyone loves my stuff. Not everyone loves the next sales. Training, partner, person stuff. You got to find your people. I kept thinking to myself, there's people out there that are just tired of the same old thing. I'm just going to approach them differently. I'm just going to start finding those homes that don't have a yard sign. I'm just going to start spend my time there. There's a reason that they didn't choose somebody yet. So I'm cruising through and then I see this one house. I was intimidated by it, by the way, because it was parked up on a hill. It's a very grand looking estate. New house just built up in the driveway. They had to pull up it and then the driveway flattened out. And I parked up top. I'm nervous at this point. I'm, like, bracing for this rejection. I roll out of my truck, step down, and look over. You know when you're gathering yourself to go up the door? Homeowner was out. The husband, he was in the backyard doing garden work. He comes up to my truck. You know that greeting that's like, can I help you? Which kind of means like, what are you doing here? And are you gonna leave? So without knowing it, I was using the slap formula. I'm like, sorry to bother you. I just pulled up in here. Listen, the reason I stopped by, my company's doing some roofs in the neighborhood due to that recent storm. I just couldn't help but notice you guys weren't working with anyone. Wanted to stop by and ask where you guys are at in the process. And the guy says, oh, you know what? I don't really know if anything's going on up there. The house is new, but hop on up. Let me know if you find anything. And I was like, what? No one was here yet? And no one had been brave enough to drive into their driveway. I don't know if they weren't home before. I was, like, blown away that they hadn't talked to anybody or they just kicked everybody off their doorstep. So I get up there, I find damage. I show them the picture. I get a one call. Close. It was the largest commission check that I'd received today. It's a huge home. And that lesson taught me something, that even though everybody looked like they were working with someone, there's a reason that people didn't choose someone yet. And what they were looking for is a good fit, a good match, someone that resonated with them. And I just did things differently. Maybe I had the right timing and. And I won that deal. So if you're someone that's thinking like, hey, it's a sea of people and it's super competitive. You're right, it is. But guess what? You're not alone. Everyone's thinking that whether it's the person that hasn't made a sale yet, whether it's the guy that's got one yard sign in the neighborhood, or the guy or gal that's got 20 yard signs in the neighborhood, there's fear. Are there people that are going to walk my signs or steal my jobs? Everybody's going through that. And what you need to do is find your people. And it happened even to my cousin Jason. Jason, my cousin texted me. He lives in Wisconsin. His home got hit by a Hailstorm. He's got roofers pounding on his doors. And he kept saying no to everybody. But this one young person, young guy, by the way, did it different. He ends up signing the contingency agreement and starts working with him. And then afterwards, he's shooting the breeze with this guy, and this guy's sharing his journey, how he got into roofing sales. And he's like, yeah, man, I just made this big life change, and I partnered with a small company. So here's the funny thing. He's working in Wisconsin from a company from Illinois that's a small company with a new salesperson, as opposed to the Milwaukee metro market, which has established roofing companies with great reputation. He said no to all those. The reason that he chose this guy is how he made him feel. And then in conversation, the sales rep is Jason. You know, you know, I just got in this industry, and I've been learning a lot. In fact, funny enough, I learned everything I know about roofing sales from this guy on YouTube named the Roof strategist. And my cousin Jason goes, you're joking me. That's my freaking cousin, dude. Small world. This young kid just did things different. He made Jason, my cousin, feel differently at the door. So whether there's a million roofers or 10 roofers, your opportunity is to find your people to target the homes that are still a viable opportunity. Put blinders on, know that everybody's going through the same thing up here, and just ignore the yard signs and focus on the opportunities that don't have yard signs. And when you do a great job making the homeowner feel good, asking the right questions, following the slab formula, which has been proven effective by thousands and thousands and thousands of people, you. You, my friend, can win business even in the most saturated markets. Just like a gentleman who's using our sales system, this sales system right here, who on day one in training in Dallas, Texas, goes through the system, does the role play, and then goes out in the field, knocks five doors, gets his first deal, becomes number one salesperson in the company, in his first month, generated himself a $40,000 in commission for himself or another gentleman, Eric. His company goes through training, puts a rep through there. Day one in Houston, Texas, gets eight deals. Again, results not common. I agree. Yeah, not everyone's going to sign eight deals. But my point is it's possible even in the most competitive market. So, my friend, put blinders on. Be you serve the opportunities that are there for you and ignore everybody else. You've got this.
