Fall in Love With Your Roofing Company Again

Adam Bensman coaches roofing owners who've lost their spark. He breaks the fix into four parts: clarify your purpose beyond profit, recruit deliberately and remove wrong-fit people, build systems so the company doesn't depend on you, and pursue personal passions to stay creative.

I want to help you fall back in love with your roofing company. The fire that you had when you started it, where every morning you woke up just like totally excited to tackle the day and create opportunities and help people, is now a smoldering pile of ashes. You're not alone. I left the roofing industry three separate times and now I work with hundreds of roofing companies and thousands of people inside the Roofing and Solar Reform Alliance. I hear from company owners who've reached out to me directly. They've pulled me aside at our in person events. We do these little micro workshops throughout the country and have shared with me stories like, hey, I really am only doing roofing for short term so I can make enough money to do the charitable work I want. Or, hey, I got into roofing to make great money and scale my company. And then I just got totally beat down with bad people, mistakes that happen, and setbacks I didn't foresee. And I just, I just feel like I don't have the inspiration and motivation to rebuild it. And then there's another one that reached out who is about doing 20 million a year, had people problems, who created a nightmare and took an advantage. You've probably heard the stories over and over again and he's basically starting at ground zero, unburying himself from a massive hole in feeling like, oh, like, do I even want to be doing this? Should I be here? Is this what I like? My real passion is helping people. It's building people up. It's helping them make the most in their lives. And like, roofing's not for me. So in this video, I'm going to share with you what I call the four P's that have helped me find find incredible amount of meaning in my work. Fulfillment, joy, happiness, passion and empowerment. And I hope to empower you in this video by sharing this because I've helped these various roofing company owners do exactly that. This isn't just like something I pulled out of my hat, which, by the way, isn't this cool new hat. We gave these out at our last event. All right, so let's rock and roll. If you're new, welcome. If you're not, welcome back. Adam Benjamin here. Let's do it. Roofing sales is personal development in disguise and the reward for growth is life changing. I hope my content helps you create a richer life and bank account. All right, I want to run through this list of the four P's and the reason that I'm doing these in a step by step categories. There's no, like one size fits all solution. But if you can master these four P's, you're going to find meaning, purpose, joy and fulfillment in your work again and in your company again. So if you feel like it's been drudgery and monotony because roofing is boring, you're not alone. Let's kick things off with the first P. And that is purpose. Listen, I know that this word gets tossed around a lot, but I'm going to share my personal purpose with you. I have my company purpose, but I want to get into my personal purpose. My personal purpose is to be the most magical version of me and help other people create magic in their lives. And what I mean by magic is extraordinary moments and extraordinary living. And by doing my best work, I can help people do that. So for me, to be the most magical version of me and help people create a magical life, what I do is I invest in my team, take a tremendous amount of joy, meeting with my team, challenging my team, helping them think differently, helping them play their best game, play their talents all out, and leave nothing on the table. And in doing so, why am I starting with my team? Well, you'll hear more about that in a little bit, but this allows me to then do the same with our community, with the thousands of people in hundreds of roofing companies that we serve collectively inside our sra. Because if my team's not able to do that, then it's just on me, right? So we rally everyone together and then it's, it's endless. I, I am fired up every day to be able to go to work and help my team create magic in their lives and then help our members create magic in their lives. And you'll notice that my purpose is different than my business purpose. My business purpose is this, to create the most powerful community in the roofing industry where we share our winning secrets, to help each other dominate in our fast changing and unpredictable times. That's my purpose. So everything I do is about community, sharing, collaboration. But again, that's separate from my purpose. And what fuels my business purpose isn't possible without my own purpose. So when you find your gift, and for so many company owners, it's maybe a charitable cause, it could be a religious cause, it could be a spiritual calling, and it could be a just deep desire. A lot of company owners are natural born leaders that just want to help people. And if you look at your company as the vessel or as they say in the marketing world, the mechanism that allows you to fuel these other things like that's magic right there. And there's a gentleman of ours who he shared this with me. His passion wasn't roofing is like I want to do just enough roofing so I can go do this mission work. And he wanted to do this mission work and I was like, dude, just like rally your company around it. Take a percentage of proceeds, build this into your marketing, get your team involved and make that your core focus. So your why your purpose is this deeper work. And then your roofing company is just a feeder that allows you to make an even bigger impact. So that's number one is your purpose. I just want to, I want to, I want to love on you and push you and encourage you to find your purpose. And don't think of roofing because your roofing company is just a money making vessel to fuel that purpose and bring it to life. Similar to like Tom's shoes. You know, you buy a pair of shoes and they'd give a pair of shoes to someone in need. Like he's not in the shoe business, in the charity business. And you can choose which business you're in. So that's number one. Number two is the people. And this is tough. It's the hardest part and it's the hardest part for people that have been burned by bad people. As Jonathan Wissman says, he's the CEO who hire. He's one of like our honorary mentors. We had a workshop out at their office and I learned a bunch on our two day recruiting workshop. I'm sitting in the back taking notes, notes. And Jonathan said something to me which I loved. He says one of the main functions of recruiting is to keep the wrong people off your team. I'm going to repeat that. Keep the wrong people off your team. And Wesley at the event taught like some of the most powerful interview tactics that I have ever heard. I was loving them, taking notes. And even on my next, my most recent hire I use these techniques. But the reason I'm sharing this is when we, when we approach our recruiting of keeping the wrong people off the team that changes your perspective of I just need to bring people in to I know exactly who should be here. So you're not it, you're not it, you're not it. And becoming way more choosy and selective. In fact, one of our members came up to me at our event that we just ran two weeks ago in Dallas Fort Worth area. It was Fort Worth at one of our members offices as a two day marketing workshop. She says, hey, we're running our recruiting ads and we've only had a handful of people that met our criteria. I'm like, that's okay, it's only going a week. I know you had a hundred, you should have like few. Get the right people there, they will come. And it was very empowering for me to hear that. You know, for me, on my last hire, I had 500 applicants before I chose a person. And I'm patient. I just, I wanted to find the right people. But as Ryan Deiss says, and I may have misquoted him, I may have misquoted him, but I believe it was Ryan Dice that said, build the people and the people build your company. So when you focus on keeping the wrong people off your team and finding the right people, which is different than finding the right people and keeping the wrong people off the team, I know they sound the same, but they're actually a little different because keeping the wrong people off the team is more like you're gating, trying to get the right people. Sometimes we can do some, what I call wishful hiring. So with the right people on your team, they'll. And they're bought into your vision and your purpose. It's going to magic is going to happen. So I'd love to hear from you if you, if you will share with our community what is your purpose. It's empowering to say it out loud, by the way. It's vulnerable. It's weird, but say it out loud and share it with me. I'd love to hear. All right, so we hit purpose. We hit process. Excuse me, purpose and people. Now let's hit the third one, which is process. Now processes. This is the way to get you out of the day to day. I am in the midst of developing. Everything's outlined. I've been sharing this inside rsra, what I call my git system, Git Get It Together system. And it's a super simple system that can help alleviate all of the chaos that's in your company to make it repeatable, to create a communication channel and to allow it to be scalable and most importantly, to give you visibility as a company owner of what's going on. So without processes, that's where you get like totally burned out and dragged back into the company and it can't run without you. Another thing Ryan Dice said, which I love is he said the more your company relies on you, the less valuable it is, which is so true. I'll link to a video at the end of this to that get system for the processes to help you implement those. All Right. And then number four, this is my favorite one and that is passion. Okay, Passion. And I mean your passion. And one of the things that allows you to fall back in love with your company is taking a break from your company. Do the things you're passionate about and have fun with it. And one of the things that brings me a lot of joy is adventure. And what I mean by adventure is specifically if you can't tell the mountains. I love being in the mountains. I love running, mountain biking, hiking, camping here and there. It's been a while because it's been not fitting my lifestyle right now. So I gotta take my own advice on that part. But I replaced it with doing a lot of day trips, four wheeling. So I love off roading. I started another channel, Pure Passion. It's called G Wheeling. I love the original G wagon. Up until 2018, I built one up for rock crawling and adventuring. I'm like, dude, I'm just going to go have fun with this. So that's a passion to me. And what's amazing is the more time I spend doing the things I'm passionate about. I love cooking, I love reading, I love learning, I'm curious. I love going out to new restaurants. I love traveling within the US which is weird. A lot of people like want these exotic things. I love seeing America and like the how different, different states are in culture, in cuisine. And the more time I do the things I'm passionate about, I bring that creativity and energy back to fuel my purpose in an even deeper way. So go do the things that you're passionate about. They will fuel your purpose. So to wrap this up, in summary, we got our four Ps purpose, people, process and passion. And I want you to jump right into this video because it's going to teach you a really simple process that 3P to get yourself out of a day to day. Thanks for joining me in this video. I hope it helped you fall back in love with your company.
