How to Get 5-Star Reviews From Your Roofing Sales Customers

Adam Bensman (the 'roof strategist') explains why five-star reviews and review volume build social proof for roofing salespeople and business owners, and gives practical tactics to collect and use those reviews. Key tactics: ask customers in person at final walkthrough/payment, ask '0–5 stars' then request a short written review, email a direct link to the review form (send up to 3 emails), prefer text messages because recipients are more likely to open them, and print/share reviews in sales presentations and marketing. He also mentions templates to be included in his Roofing Sales Accelerator marketing pack.

Hey, guys, Adam here, the roof strategist. Today we are talking about how to get five star reviews. It's been a hot topic. I keep getting questions from sales guys who are trying to really grow their reputation, make their company proud. Maybe they're making. They're having some incentives in the business to get more five star reviews. Because as we know, whether you're a salesperson or you're an owner, the more reviews you have, the higher the social proof. Now, what is social proof? That's the way of someone saying, hey, someone else used them and liked them. I like them too. We do the same thing. Whether we use Yelp or TripAdvisor to find a restaurant or even Google Maps, we see reviews. Now, what carries more weight? 3 reviews at 5 stars. We all question, right? Oh, it's just their friends, their family, it's people in the office. But when they have 50, 100, 200, or 1,000 reviews, now, all of a sudden there's instant credibility and trust and people will choose you. So again, whether you're a salesperson or an owner, these reviews are really important and it is very hard to collect them. But when you collect them, and especially as a salesperson, you. You swipe these reviews, you print them out, you bring them to your sales meetings, and you can show homeowners, Mr. And Mrs. Homeowner, I'd love to show you some recent reviews that's gonna have the person's name and the date, and maybe you're referenced in the review. You can say, this is what people are saying not only about the company, but of my service. So getting these reviews will help you get more sales. So print them out. I'm gonna show you how to get them. Print them out and use them. Send them to people. Okay, Bring them to a sales presentation. Show what other people are saying about you. People always want references. And not every homeowner wants to hand out their name, phone number, and address for you to use them to have all of your clients call or customers call. So when you can print these out and use them, it's gold. Now, I exchanged a few emails with a gentleman who's a fan of the channel who bought the roofing sales accelerator marketing pack. He gets an email, by the way, the minute you purchase, and he says, hey, Adam, this is what I could really use help with. I want to start getting more reviews. How do I do it? So he gave me the idea to include in my upcoming expansion pack. By the way, if you're watching this in the beginning of 2020, it's available now, but it will be coming in the, in the winter to include my email templates on how to get reviews and my approach to do that. I'm going to give you the tips and insights on how to do it. You can do it on your own or you can get the roofing sales accelerator marketing pack. It'll notify you on that webpage when it becomes available, by the way, so you can take a look there and you can start using my template in that approach. Now what you want to do is send an email. I'm going to talk about the in person thing in a minute. You're going to send an email. Okay. How many emails are you going to send? 3 until you get it. Because not everyone opens every email. Not everyone has time. So you want to send multiple emails. You want to send an email asking for the review, you want to have it be short, ask for the review. And most importantly, how are we going to make it easy? We are going to provide a direct link to the review platform. This is the most important piece. If you walk away with anything from this video, it is about emailing a direct link to the review platform. Now, many of us want reviews on Google. Now I in the past, in my past life built an entire platform email marketing service that allowed roofing companies to collect reviews. We ran into one really big obstacle, especially in markets where Google wasn't as common. To write a Google review, you need a Gmail address or Google email address. If you don't have one, when someone clicks that link, they're prompted to sign up for a Google email address. Well, if they don't have one, what are they going to do? They're not going to do anything because it's trouble in time. They're not going to set up an email address just to write a review for you. Now as much as they love you, chances are they won't do it. So maybe it's a Facebook recommendation. By the way, Facebook recently rolled out a change where now instead of reviews, they're called recommendations. So you can do a direct link. Now when I say direct link, I mean you go to your Google listing, you go to your Facebook page, you click the button that says write a review or submit a recommendation and you copy paste the URL. It's going to be really long. That's okay. You want to send them that direct link. That way they don't have to click around. They get the email, they show up. So here's what I do. You can have this email pre written on your Phone, they need to do it on their device. By the way, you can't like hand your phone over or your tablet and have them write it because they need to be logged in or their account. So have that queued up as a text message or an email. And when you're sitting with the homeowner, the great time to ask for this is upon final payment or during your final walkthrough. And it goes like this. Mr. Homeowner, may I ask you, if you were to rate us on a scale of 0 to 5 stars, how many stars would you rate the service that myself and my team provided to you? And if they say four or five stars, say, I'm so glad to hear that. I really value your feedback. My company values your feedback because we strive to provide nothing short of the best possible service. Now that is a really big commitment to make because there's always room for improvement. But your feedback will be really powerful. May I ask for you to just take one to two minutes to put that in writing for me on a review and I'll give you a link. I'll make it really easy. All you need to know is would you prefer a link to Google or to Facebook? Let them decide. You send the direct link to them, they submit the review. Okay, now, if they don't write it, then, or they say now is not a good time, close the conversation with, hey, not a problem. Is it okay if I shoot you an email and you can get to it when it's convenient for you? Yes. Great. What's the best email address? Chances are, by the way, you already have that on file from working with them, but you can confirm this. Text messages. Oopsies. Dropped a pen. Text works exceptionally well now. Why is that? Guess what? Everyone opens text messages. Emails. Not everybody opens. Not everyone checks your email. They might see something and they might delete it or swipe through. But if you send them a text message and it goes ding, they open it up, they see, oop, text message. Oh, by the way, I actually have one. You look at a text message, you click on it. If someone provided a direct link, they click on it and boom, they can write a quick review right there on their phone. It takes two seconds and they're already logged into Facebook or Google on their phone. So while you're on site, ask, have it ready, send it, send it to them, try to get them to do it while you're there so they don't forget. Because putting it off means it won't get done on the follow up when you Leave, send a text message, including the direct link. Then don't be afraid to follow up one or two more times. Now let's go back to using these for sales because that's what this channel is all about, helping you make sales. Now, again, we have salespeople, we have owners. As an owner, these reviews will make or break the longevity of your business. If someone googles and they just see those two angry customers, we all have them. By the way, guys, we provided incredible Service. We did 600 roofs in a year. We did. You can't make everybody happy. Stuff goes wrong. It's construction. And those people that write a negative review, it will happen. There's no way around it. But those need to be buried in a sea of people who love you. And the people who love you are the least likely to write a review unless they're prompted. Angry people want to write a review because they're like, oh, I hate these people. I got to tell the whole world. God, this feels good to curse these butt heads, right? That's what they want to do. We just want to give the lovely people a chance to tell us how lovely we are so we can help spread the word to other people and help more people. When you get these reviews, use them in everything, guys. If you're a sales guy, put it on your personal Facebook page. Just had an opportunity to. Oh, by the way, a little tip on the review thing to remind me to bring this up. Use these reviews on your personal Facebook page. Use them in your email follow ups. By the way, here's what past people have said. If you're not closing a deal yet, you have someone who's waiting, say, hey, I understand you're looking. I just wanted to send you a few reviews that I got recently to help in your decision. Right, because don't forget, don't not follow up. If you run an appointment, you don't make the sale. Follow up, send them in there. If you're using direct mail as an owner, put the reviews Rated 5 stars on Google and Facebook. Rated 4.8 stars. Whatever your rating is, these reviews for a salesperson or an owner, print them out. Use them in your pitch. Use them in your presentation. Leave them with homeowners. Show them the first name, the last name, the date and the star rating. These will push people over the edge. Because I'm going to ask you this. You have a brand new restaurant that opened up, no reviews. You have the greatest Mexican restaurant that's ever lived in your town with 684 4.8 star reviews, you're going out to dinner, which do you choose? Now some of you might say, oh, I'm going to try the new guy. Well, you might. But nine out of 10 people want the tried and true. They believe in this one. So when you're being pitted against the competing roofer and you've got this guy with, with no testimonials, no reviews, just someone who showed up at their door, which is what we all do with no reviews. And then you've got you that shows up and say, hey, by the way, I have five, five star reviews that are within the last three months. I'd like for you to look through them. I'm going to leave them with you because I think it's important to hear what people have to say about us so you can make a confident decision. Who are they going to choose? They're going to choose the reputable person because someone else liked them. All right? So use these reviews the right way. Be aggressive when you to get them. Ask during collection of final payment or if you're a little excited, maybe right after install, right after the roof's approved. Whenever you provide a really big service and someone says something nice, ask them, if you were to rate us on a scale of 0 to 5 stars, what would you give me? And the reason I'm asking isn't to put you on the spot, Mr. Homeowner. It's because I'm really committed to providing the best service possible. And if there's areas I can improve, I want to hear it. And at the same time, if you were really satisfied, I'd love to hear that too. And so would my future customers. And then when they tell you, hey, would you mind taking a couple of moments to just quickly jot down a review for us and post up your star rating on Google or Facebook, I'll send you a direct link. I'll make it really easy. I mean, 10 words will work, doesn't matter. Then we email the direct link. If that doesn't work, we're going to send them a text message with a direct link and if they do not take action, follow up two or three more times. Say, hey, I know you're busy, may I ask for a quick favor? Would you mind posting your your star rating for us? Alright, so that's that. Now you have enough information to run with this. If you want to use my templates, my emails, my follow up emails and my text message templates, they will be included in the roofing sales accelerator marketing pack expansion pack that is coming soon.
