I've Upset Some People...

Adam Bensman explains why his recent moves upset some people: founding the Roofing and Solar Reform Alliance, restricting access to his sales system, and shifting to longer-form content. He says you can't please everyone, doing what's right is harder, and he's building a network for value-aligned owners and salespeople instead.

To the people that I've upset and the people that support me, this video is to share the lessons that I've learned through the changes I've made by starting the Roofing and Solar Reform alliance and making some very clear changes to the content that I've put out. This video is unlike anything I've done before. I'm sharing my real, honest thoughts. This has nothing to do with roofing sales. This is about the direction that I'm going as a person. And one of the things that prompted this was a recent video I put out on the roofer fraud, the one where I was reacting to fraud being done on roofs and people had accused me of saying, hey, there are people like that in rsra. You should tighten up. You should know who you're letting in. What else did I see on there? Go back to making door knocking videos. I used to like you. Stop trying to be a white knight for the roofing industry, this type of thing. So I want to share these. These lessons with you. Why, if you're someone that is tuned in or was tuned in, this video is going to help you decide if you want to stay tuned in or not. And just to give you an insight as to. As to what's coming and just to address the elephant in the room. So. So here are just a few of the lessons that I learned. Number one, you can't please everybody. You know, I started making videos when I was living in an RV and I was horrified of the comments that came in. And then people started saying, hey, make more videos. Make more videos. But you reach a point, and I think I'm there now based on comments that you can't please everybody. So I'll get some people saying, stop trying to be a white knight for the industry. Go back to doing this. Well, if I did that, then these people say, hey, Adam, do this. Instead of, I can't please everyone, and I'm not willing to try to please everybody. So what I've done is made a commitment to what I believe is my heart and my passion. And when I got into the business, I was taught how to conduct insurance fraud. In my first interview, I was ashamed to tell people I was a roofer. So I am giving a voice to my experience in the roofing world and to connect with the people who share my values and to support them the best I can. And if you don't like that change, I respect that. And you don't need to be spending your time here. So again, the lesson, and this applies to you, is you just you can't please everybody no matter what you do. The second lesson I learned is that doing what you think is right is actually the harder path. You know, when I originally had my sales system available, anyone could buy it and lots of people did. And I didn't have people have an issue with me at that point. And once I created a tighter application only process to try to limit who had access to our system, all of a sudden now it's not good enough, right? Or I have a complaint about this company or I want it and my company doesn't have it. And there's a whole slew of reasons that I made it application only. There's a reason that sales. The sales rep package is no longer available. And I didn't share this before, but I will now. Number one is sales reps were the highest abusers of all. They were the ones that would purchase it and not pay. They were the ones that would purchase, download everything and refund. And then owners were second to that. Buying the sales rep package, which was designed to help a sales rep and, and then using it for their team, which was a violation of our copyright and our terms of use, it became a really big headache and the policing was a nightmare. I was the biggest support on our team and I just didn't want to continue supporting that journey. I also had owners that were buying my system and using it in practices I didn't wish to support. So that's what led to the change. And the beauty about being in business is you get to write your own rules. And I'm really committed to sharing people who are value aligned, who just want to do a good job in business and serve people the right way. And I get to write the rules, you know, for how I wish to do business. And the cool thing is, when you're in sales or when you're in your business, you get to write your own rules too. And I encourage you to do that. So I've written mine and I know who I'm here to serve. Which actually leads me to lesson number three is that no system is perfect. You know, I've been criticized by folks saying, hey, know who's in your organization? And I get that, man. We've kicked people out, we've denied entry to folks. I investigate people when there are complaints. So to join rsra, there is an application process. Is it perfect? Of course it's not. No system can be. However, we are making it even stricter. And I am always looking for ways to improve. So I'm not going to tell you this is the best system in the world and that we're guaranteed to keep bad people out. You know that video of the roofer fraud I published? Because I publish all my YouTube videos inside our private app, and I put that one in there, and I said, if anyone in RSRA is doing this, they will be removed. And I know that a lot of times, like, the whistleblower is actually the salesperson that, like, wises up, like, man, we shouldn't be doing this. So I'm doing my very best. And the one thing that I'll say is when we do get complaints, I investigate them. And the way that I handle them is very similar to a court hearing where I'm going to have the person who's submitting the complaint. They have to be the victim that's willing to speak up and provide actual evidence. And then I talk to the company and they provide actual evidence. And in the most recent time I did this, I was sitting down with two different parties, the complainant and the person who was a member. In fact, actually, both of them are members, and the complaint came from a fellow member. And I went through it. I went through the evidence. We all were there together, and I made the executive decision to have that person removed. And the problem with a lot of this is sometimes I'll get complaints, and it's from a disgruntled person. And there's nothing more than, oh, you're working with the worst person in my market, so I won't join. And it's like, more often than not. And I have investigated those, by the way. There's zero evidence whatsoever other than I have beef or I heard or one time I ran into this customer that said this, and it's roofing. Like, by the way, I'm not excusing people's behavior. There are times that that person should be removed. The reason I'm sharing this is oftentimes this is a claim that when I say, okay, great, what evidence do you have? And I don't have any. Or I saw this once. Like, I imagine if you were in there and you had someone that was upset with you that just said so and so did something bad. And I said, okay, you got. You're booted. And you're like, well, why? I'm like, oh. Cause someone said something about you. So again, I take this stuff seriously. And when we do get a little birdie in our ear, we keep an eye on folks. And I can keep an eye on folks. So anyway, no system's perfect, but we're Doing our absolute best. And I learned that again, doing what's right is harder. Cause no one had beef when I allowed my system to be available to everybody. But the minute I say I want it to be in the right hands of the people that, that I believe in supporting and do my very best to do now, now it's a problem. Number four, what you're going to see is changes to my content. And I am, I'm committed to serving the people that I want to, I want to serve. And as a creator, you know, vanity metrics, likes, views, subs, people get fixated on that. I don't, you know, a lot of people in the social media world in the, in the roofing space is like, I have so and so followers. But that's not how I measure my success. I measure my success on the impact. And I know that by me changing my message where the people who are my customers are owners or leaders of really good companies or salespeople of really good companies who want to support this mission, those are the people that I'm speaking to. So what you will see in terms of changes is difference in content style, longer form content, deeper dive content and more content targeted towards the, the industry at large, the troubles and struggles that owners and managers have, and continuing to support salespeople by providing great training content. Which is why again, I'm going into more longer form content. The other thing that you'll notice is we stripped all my shorts off of this channel and we started a second channel. It's called Adam Bensman Shorts. So if you're someone that likes to consume shorts, jump on that channel and you'll find all the shorts there. And then all of our long form videos are posted here on YouTube and on our podcast. You'll also find them cross published on TikTok, LinkedIn, Instagram and Facebook. And then number five is through this change, you know, I have had to develop a level of thick skin and focus that, you know, it's funny, you learn in door to door salesman. I'll tell you, this is even more difficult. You know, I get more messages, people that are disgruntled, responding to emails and calling me all types of names and more negativity on Facebook. But what that's really helped me do is just double down on my commitment to just make great content and know again through all of this, I can't please everyone. Doing what's right is harder. No system's perfect. I'm going to make changes to just say, hey, you know, whether you're thrilled about this change or not. Thrilled. My commitment is to continually deliver my absolute best, to create the highest impact possible and to change the lives of the people who, who are my people, those that connect with my mission. And by the way, you don't need to be a member of RSRA to connect with my mission. There are salespeople who are selling for organizations that aren't members. That's totally cool. I want to keep supporting you. Right. It doesn't need to be a financial exchange of doing that. It's one of the reasons I made my book. I provided a free digital copy in my free training center. And by the way, you can access that in the link below. The description below there's a link or you can go to adamsfreestuff.com and again, coming forward in the content and providing even more value. And then the same goes for our members. You know, my time is being spent inside rsra working in the trenches with my members, developing tools, sales tools, systems and creating a really powerful network. And the number one thing that I'm focused on right now is the people. You know, people join rsra, many of them for value alignment, many of them for the community and many for sales training. But what people really stick around is the people. And what I am working so hard to build is not to be known as the best sales training organization out there, but to be known as the best network in the industry. The most powerful network where value aligned people share their winning secrets and help each other win. That's my mission right now. And although people come for sales training, that's what they stick around. And we're vetting even more. I don't want takers, I don't want people that don't believe that a rising tide lifts all boats. Because inside, when we share our winning secrets to help uplift others and embrace this journey of being an entrepreneur or a salesperson, which can be isolating, it can be tough to actually have real talk, wonder if you're normal. That's what I'm creating inside. And that what's interesting is where the most feedback come from our members of what they love the most is the people. So to those that are upset with me, those that now maybe don't like me anymore are going to unsubscribe. You know, I invite you to, I want you to be happy and find your tribe and if you're one of my tribe and my people, I just want to say thank you and I'm glad to have you here and I have no ask for you at this time other than keep tuning in. And if I provide value, stick around. It's that simple. Hey. Here's to your journey and your success, wherever it takes you.
