Supplementing WITHOUT Xactimate Right From Your Phone? The Fast & Easy Way w/ Garrett Kurtt

Garrett Kurtt shows how One Click Code lets roofers supplement insurance claims without Xactimate. Enter an address and the app pulls local code requirements, then generates a PDF with municipal docs and manufacturer specs to email adjusters. The whole workflow takes 5 to 10 seconds.

Check it out. We're on location with Garrett from OneClick Code.
Hey, everybody.
And this is our first on location shoot. And talking about supplementing today. Overcoming some of the common fears people have, which I've been getting a lot of folks that don't want to supplement, they don't want to get blacklisted from supplementing, or maybe they don't have xactimate. And a lot of questions like, how do I use xactimate? Do I need xactimate to supplement? So in this video, we're going to be sharing all that. But first, Garrett introduction the founder of One Click Code. Tell folks how we know each other. Garrett's been on the channel, by the way, what, three times?
I think this will be the fourth time.
Fourth time. Yeah. I'm gonna put. If you wanna see the other videos with Garrett, click here. Over there, above his head. We'll put the card there. Yeah. If YouTube works.
Yeah. We go back. It's been, gosh, almost seven years now. I think it's 2014. I think it was right about the time we got introduced to each other.
Yes.
And he has been. He started off with us working with the roofing company that I used to own, High Impact. And he worked with us, oh, my gosh, for a year and a half. Two years, Right?
Long time.
Yeah, three years. Long time.
And then as part of this whole thing starting. Ish. I mean, I can't take any credit for it. I was a lucky witness to be part of watching this whole thing come to life.
Yeah. I would say. And we were very successful with Adam working with us too, so.
Well, thanks for the kind words. That was not a paid promotion. Nor is this, by the way, just to get this out of the way. Anytime I bring folks on, I'm not getting paid by promoting what Garrett's doing. One Click Code is awesome. I believe in it. And we're gonna share how his program can help you. And there's a way to get started free, but most importantly is just to solve that. So let's start from the top. People are afraid to supplement because they say I'm gonna get blacklisted from an insurance company. I'm gonna be asking for too much. What are your thoughts on that? Like, I have mine, but I want to hear yours first. Can someone get blacklisted, quote, unquote, from supplementing? Just off the top?
Off the top. I think they can get somewhat blacklisted. I don't know if it's like company. I don't think it's company wide. But they can get tagged. And I would say tagging would be, you know, this is a contractor or a company that is not necessarily something or someone or a group of them are not necessarily presenting themselves in a. Maybe it could be professional manner, you know, like they're disrespectful. It could be that they are supplementing in a way that's just not in line with the expectations of how they. The professional standard would be according to the insurance company. But overall I don't think that there is actually a black list that exists across all of a company.
It's not tsa.
No, it's not tsa.
It's not tsa. The other thing too that I think people get concerned about is asking for things that aren't due. You know, like if you go crazy over the top and submit a supplement that ends up boosting your per square price on like a walker 20 square roof to like $600 a square because you added in all of odds and ends. Like insurance companies aren't going to fly by that. And the beautiful thing about. Well, I don't want to get too ahead of myself. So you're not going to get blacklisted and do you need the next question, do you need Xactimate to supplement?
I don't think you need Xactimate supplement.
Will it help?
It will help. I mean it's just a. It's an agreed upon method to identify certain line items and pricing associated with those line items. But I do not think it's required. An Excel spreadsheet can work just as effectively. I know acculinx not to give a plug to them, but it's, you know, or jobnimbus or anybody else, if they have an ability to create an estimate, it's just a matter of a quantity, a description of that and the amount. Yeah, and it could be Excel spreadsheet too.
Yeah. The other thing too. Garrett and I were talking before this. I got busy when I was selling and there are times that like for me to sit down and go through my scope and change, you know, the code. Exactly. Code different than one click code. The exact RFG3 hundreds. Oh, this carrier does with felt with no S, no felt for that carrier. And then it'd be like, oh, they forgot ice and water. And then I gotta go plug it in. And I stopped doing that. Cause I felt like I was wasting my time. And my first attempt was, you know, you were short on X feet of whatever it was, you know, it was either over or material shortage. New Eagle View adjusting for that ice water shield ridge cap. I just started to send off the requests and just without xactimate to see what happened. And most of them said yes and then just change it because correct me if I'm wrong either, even if you submit a full scope, rewritten scope, they're gonna rewrite it in their own xactimate for their file, aren't they?
Yeah, yeah, absolutely they do.
They don't just approve it and then replace their file. Like they're gonna double check everything.
Well, when I first started supplementing, I think this could be, let's just say like 60% or 70% of people out there don't necessarily supplement. The easiest way that I did was create an email and put in a bullet point add.
Yeah, bold add.
Add drip edge on rake. 165 linear feet. Don't put a price. Just put what I want. And then, or I say update quantity. Update quantity of pipe jacks. You missed two total of six. No xactimate needed. And they usually will take that. And then what they'll do is they'll update their estimate and send it right back to you saying, here's the revisions based on my ability to approve what you requested, didn't require xactimate and didn't require you to go through the xactimate process, which is very painful and sl. So slow. It's like, I mean, I wish they would be able to increase the speed in which you can enter things. But yeah, different topic.
Why would you make it easier? I know. Why would it be easier? So you're not going to get blacklisted. You don't need xactimate. Of course it can help. There are great resources out there to learn xactimate and. Or to outsource your xactimate if you're a larger company. I recommend that to start because you can also learn the ins and outs kind of through what gets approved first. But now, like, let's talk about the way to stay above board with a supplement request if you're trying to. Because of course, we all want to earn a good income, but it's not about greed. It's not about getting paid. Like, ooh, I snaked them over for this. It's about making it right for the homeowner because it's there. Like, your project's done, we're out of there. You've got the warranty, but we're out of there. So how do you keep above board while managing a relationship with an adjuster insurance company, while making it right for the homeowner and Getting paid appropriately.
I think it's creating consistency, but not consistency of doing the wrong thing.
Yeah.
So creating a process to which you're going to estimate. Yes. So on every single job, we are going to make a rule that if the house was built before 1965, we were going to check for decking, and we are going to request decking be approved prior to the roof starting.
Right.
That could be a process. I mean, that's. And I've gone through that. Worked a storm in Cleveland, where we made that our process. Because more than half of the roofs in Cleveland were redecks.
Yeah. Beautiful market there too, by the way.
Beautiful market.
A lot of guys reaching out from Ohio. They are sitting in a gold mine. All that aluminum siding is still there.
It's still there. It was there 10 years ago. We discovered it 10 years ago. Wood grain aluminum siding.
Eight inch. Yeah. Which, by the way, discontinued. Fun fact being discontinued for anyone that doesn't work aluminum siding, it's no longer 8 inch. Like, what is it? Like 7 in like 78 or something?
I forget. 3, 8.
Yeah. The corners won't line up, so you get one wall. They gotta do the whole home. And homeowners love it. Because of the house, you get a facelift. Wow factor. Customers love it. That was beside the point.
Side story.
Yeah. So when you talked about consistency, obviously you run a company called One Click Code. I just downloaded the app. I've had it. I redownloaded it. By the way, here's dashboard. I enter an address. Let's just do one boom. And what this will tell me. Just so anyone can see. I'm gonna hold it up to the camera on here. Can I show the sample?
Is that cool?
Yeah. So here's a sample. You guys can download the app. It's free. Sorry about the lights. But it gives you all the items.
That are literally commonly supplemented on a roofing estimate.
Yeah. Example drip edge required from the 2015 IBC code. Yes. Underlayment? Yes. Ice and water shield on eaves. No. But that's this municipality IRC Drip edge Valley liner underlayment. Okay. So I can get into all the nitty gritty details, even down to, like, how much ice and water is required and all that, because some adjusters might fight these things. And what I really have loved about this platform, which is available, it's just such. You can download, get started. Try it free. It's really cheap. It's going to make everyone. Garrett and I were laughing about how people be like, oh, it's 30, $40 a month. I could do it on my own. Cool. What's your time worth? If you could save me two phone calls? Just the time. Like, I'll pay you, but then if you can get me one house with ice and water approved for the homeowner. Because, like, my old house, we just. We just sold our old home. I didn't have ice and water on my roof. I live in the mountains.
You didn't have it? No.
There's no ice and water and no drip edge and no rake edge.
That just seems weird.
Yeah. No edge metal. No edge metal, no ice and water. Wow. And the house was built in the 80s. The roof. The home was fully remodeled before I moved in. It wasn't there. And should I had it have had a claim? Those items need to be on there. Right. Especially for areas in Colorado where there's inspections. Yeah. And. And so many people. One of the biggest mistakes that people make, which I made, is, oh, I got the scope when I was new. Just got to do it. It's like, don't want to upset anyone, but then it's eating into your profit margins. But forget that. Like, it's about making the homeowner whole.
Yeah.
The last thing you want is later they come back to you. So.
Well, I think. Okay, so going back to the supplement. Right. And then making a process. So when I would ask the adjuster, not using Xactimate, just put in, you know, add the description and quantity. Right. Not the amount. Then they. If it was a code item, and they say, well, send us the code documentation.
Yeah.
And then that would be my next, like. All right, now I got to go find that. Now I got to figure out the city and county. There's the two phone calls.
Right.
It's literally two phone calls. Call the city. Is it inside the city?
No.
Oh, it's in the county. Yes.
Confirmed.
Okay. Now I have to. Hey, can you give me. Can I look online, or can you give me a documentation that shows that ice and water shield, drip edge, whatever is required. We do all that in the app, but then what we also do is create a PDF, so within five seconds, you literally can type in an address. You can create the report, send the report to yourself or to the adjuster within 5 to 10 seconds of creating the report to then back up what you're about ready to send, which is a very simple supplement saying, add ice and water shield on eves 165ft times 6ft. Two courses. Here's the documented proof, because guess what else we have in our app? We have the document from the city and county showing ice and water shield is required. So everything's right there. I can literally create a supplement without Xactimate with an email template with our software and send it to the adjuster, and the adjuster will add it because all they need to add it is a request from the contractor and the document to support it, and that is your supplement.
So another thing too, which you can see the button PDF and then, oops, my phone fell asleep. Code enforcement, yes or no. And then install per manufacturer spec. See that one? That's the big one. So if you verify you're pulling off OC or gaf, and in their installation manual says two rows of ice and water shield are required. The ice and water shield required. What is it, 16 inches inside the heated wall? Is my memory still serving me?
I think it's 24.
24.
I should probably know this.
I know.
And it changes. Just so everybody knows, it's not the same everywhere. Yeah, up in the mountains, it could be 6ft. Some other places it could be, you know, 28 inches or 32 inches.
But whatever it is, install spec, like, boom. There's that whole piece. So I click PDF and code report and I can even select some other items. And it's generating.
It's five seconds, it's gonna go to space, it's gonna come back down.
I dropped my phone down a flight of stairs the other day, so there it is. But anyway, there's the report sample, and.
You guys, it's a PDF, which means you can send that.
So top button, share. Boom. By the way, I'm all about speed. So it says, yeah, then allow boom. And then I can click and draft my email and pop it out. But. So, one thing, the main reason I wanted to share this with people is I've been getting emails from very successful salespeople lately, and their number one issue is not the ability to sell. It's not getting referrals. It's how in the hell do I maintain my sanity? Cause I'm so busy, I had a guy reach out, another guy says, I'm gonna be a sales manager. I'm gonna be in charge of supplementing and all that stuff too. And I'm like, man, you're gonna be in for. Takes time, but if I can sit there, enter it in, hit PDF, hit share. All you need to do is say to the insurance adjuster, like, can you please update the scope to include the drip edge and ice and water shield for this project and the ventilation requirements, for example, or valley liner Or Valley liner. Here's the report, here's the contact info and verification. That's it. They're going to do it. Now, I might get pushback from the supplement gurus out there that like love to do the things perfectly. But you know, that's great if you want to do that, go down that road. But if 8 out of 10 adjusters are going to update their own scope, why would I waste my time?
You know, I thought the same thing. I thought the same thing. What would happen though is for me was I just want to organize it because I was that perfectionist. I had all those things. But I can tell you right now, if I took a step back and said, okay, I'm doing so many jobs and, and my time is valuable. Do I go after the extra hundred dollars per job and take the extra four hours to get that?
Yeah.
Or do I get the extra $400 that will now with this app and my request, within an email, take me 20 minutes or 10 minutes, I'm gonna do that all day long. I can do it. I don't need to. I mean, no offense, I don't need to go pay somebody else to do it. I as a salesperson can do it myself.
Exactly, exactly.
And that's empowering.
It is empowering. And especially no matter like how you get paid, some companies will pay off the top on the first check only. Some, some will pay commission on profit. No matter how your company structure is, it's a resource for you to be able to take care of the homeowner. And I wanna talk sales in a second. Cause to me, everything should be brought into the way. Your customer should know what you're doing and how that's different from everybody else. And if you're sitting there with a customer and they're concerned about out of pocket expenses or surprises, cause we've all seen it. You get into a redeck. I've had horror stories I've shared on the channel, get into a redeck. I didn't realize that the homeowner, he approached me as a bid. It was a hail claim. I was new, I didn't know, get into it and needed a redeck. So I made mid project say, hey bud, it's going to be an extra 7,000. He wasn't very happy about this. Now it was in the contract, like, should this be found? Then he says, hey, this is an insurance claim. Does that change anything? And I'm like, rookie mistake. Yeah, it does.
Is there any insurance claim?
It does. In fact, let's redo this. So we ended up getting it taken care of. But my point is it's very valuable to share the technology and resources you have at your disposal to serve a homeowner. To say, listen, I see in this process a lot that insurance companies, they look at your roof and they owe for like, kind and quality. And they can often write it very literally like, this is what's up there. But things change, laws change, codes, change enforcement. It's a moving target. It is a moving target. And if you can position it to a homeowner, like, hey, we use a really great resource that allows us to verify all the different layers of both building code, building enforcement, and the code required based on the shingle type, manufacturer, manufacturer's spec that's on your roof. And the last thing we want to do is have that be either a surprise bill or end up installing it and find out. Should have been done differently. So we've, we verify all this using third party information on your behalf and we make sure that it's covered under the insurance process in a way that's very fair. Like, it's not you're sitting there taking your insurance company and.
Or being perceived as doing that. It's not necessarily you are or not. It's being perceived. That goes back to the blacklist. You can be perceived.
Yeah.
If you're doing that, I don't think you can be on blacklist being perceived, but you could be right.
Yeah. And reputation changes. So, yeah. Anyway, if you guys are new, I love it. Like, go check out one click code. It's in the app on both broken Androids and iPhones. Android and I want to kind of close with these three things for people. One, use it in the sales process. You will win business because it differentiates you.
Creates trust.
Creates a tremendous amount of trust.
Trust with the investor, trust with the homeowner.
Yes. Credibility and the thing like, by the way, Garrett did a video for their website and he sent it to me before it came up. You need to go watch it. I won't go.
The dueling adjusters and the contractor.
It is hysterical because you can supplement and have really good relationships with an adjuster when you do it fairly. And this is like your digital umpire.
In a transparent way.
Yeah. It's like, we're not gonna argue because this is fact, right? Yeah, it is what it is and it just levels the game, so to speak. But anyway, go watch the video. It's very well done.
Yeah.
So that's first thing. Second thing, go get a free report and try it out. Because it's free. Yeah, sign up for free and then do one. Now like go pull one on a home, won't cost anything. Send it to try it out. Like, see what's missing on the scope versus what this says. Compare side by side. You'd be like, okay, says it needs drip edge, doesn't use ice water, whatever it is. Compare, see what's missing and send a simple email to the adjuster and just say, hey, here's the report. I noticed these are missing. Can you please add these to the scope as we proceed? Would that language work or do you need to modify that?
Yeah, yeah, I think that works perfect. I just want to add. Just say the things you want to add. Specify that the description of that and the quantity.
Quantity is good. Yeah, quantity wise.
In any math. Just do the math.
Don't trust me. One of my most popular videos. I have like 100 comments are like, hey, dummy, you did this calculation. You said it was 20 bucks an hour. It's really 200. Everybody was right. My math was not right. So take your time on the math. Yeah, so download the free report, submit it with a short email and see like if it works. You just got a free report and homeowners made whole. You earn more money. You guys could do the best job possible, stand behind it. It works out for everyone. And there's.
We save you probably about 20 or 30 minutes in time to gather that data. And the scope time. And the scope time. You have to use xactimate to do it.
I hate doing that stuff. Stuff. I hate it.
I hated it too.
I'm so glad for everyone who. There's some people who geek out in it, but I just, I'm not wired that way.
But for the, for the day to day person that's going, I'm gonna go sell a roof today. If I can get three today, that's awesome. I'm gonna knock 20 doors, I'm gonna get on five roofs and I'm gonna sign three. I think to be able to say I can then turn around and go meet an adjuster. And if the adjuster's done saying, hey, we're not gonna be able to pay for ice and water shield unless you can provide proof. Like, hey, listen, I have the code right here.
He's like, great, you can.
I hope that I really, what I want you to do is send me a request, send me your estimate. The statement is send me your estimate. You're like, great, I'm going to send you a request with what I'm looking for. Plus the documented proof. I'll allow you to update your estimate because you're going to do that anyways.
Yeah.
And you just send me the revise when you're done.
Let me tell you, when Garrett got this whole thing going, I sent a few emails to help to, like, city governments and stuff, because it's. They're required to, like, release these documents.
We were calling hundreds.
It did not get received well. I thought it'd be fine. Like, I'm requesting this. And I was like, oh, my gosh. I ruffled a lot of feathers. And I didn't know it.
We were very stern about needing this documentation, which all of you are now using or you'll be using. And it's not easy in some municipalities where they don't want to answer the phone and they don't want to respond to an email.
They don't. And you know when you do, what's funny to me, like, so I don't know if anyone who's watching has been through. You've remodeled homes, right? You've been through these?
I've done my own home.
Yeah.
Do anybody else's home, but I did mine.
Oh, man. I got into our old kitchen. We remodeled it, and none of our electric. I mean, there were bare wires running through the house. Was built in the 50s. Bare wires, aluminum, running through the house.
Or was this built before? Aluminum, cloth.
I forget knob. And I wasn't up there. The guy that was working for us was up there, but he started firing our attic. And he's like, yeah, we gotta redo a whole bunch. So not to code, obviously. You rip out anything, you access anything. It has to get brought to code. Those are the surprise items. Homeowners will love you when you explain what's going on. And I can tell you, I get the most emails from people. I won the business because I took the time to explain to the homeowner. So you get this roof done. If I had a guy that did this to me, my roof didn't have any ice and water drip out. You get it approved, you become talk of the town because you're a hero. You're gonna get the neighbor, you're gonna get the next person. You're gonna get the next person. So.
Well, you created the trust.
Yeah, created trust. And you followed through, saving a bunch of money.
And you didn't over promise you could back it up.
Yeah, I'm doing a video on that. Over promising and under delivering.
Worst thing you can do. Worst thing you ever do.
Oh, don't do that. So let's. Is there anything else that I missed? Like, forget. By the way, if you guys don't want to see if you like a resistance to trying new things that are free, what you can do is all of this by contacting the local and county city or building apartments. Right.
You got to find out where that is. Like the property could be in the county or could be in the city. So don't assume just by the city name that it's in the city city. Because there's quite a bit of. I think it's like what's called 30% of properties fall outside of the city listed in the address. That's our secret sauce. We identified jurisdiction.
I need to check my house. Cause my new. We moved. Yeah, check my new place.
See if we work. Oh, my gosh, this is gonna get tense.
This is. This. By the way, this was not planned. None of this was scripted, as you can tell. Cause we're going.
The guys in the other room right now are probably crossing their fingers that they're like, make sure it works. We're on film right now.
I know. Or they're saying, you guys need to shut up. Cause we're working. Oh, look at that. It already. I only got like quarter of my address in it. It pulled it up. New report generating. We're gonna see this because my address is in a city that's 12 miles away, but I'm in a county that's the other county. And I'm in a school district that's in the other county. What'd it do? And it says.
Right here at the top.
Yeah, that's right. Sury County, Larimer County. I live in Larimer County, Colorado. Property address in the neighboring one. But what's your. What's your city name? The city name is Lyons, Colorado.
Lyons, Colorado. So if you were an adjuster or a contractor going out to that spot, you would say, oh, it's in the city of Lyons. So therefore, the city of Lyons codes apply. However, it's not. It's in Larimer county.
Which is funny because the sales tax that's listed is way higher in the county that Lyons is in.
So we do address specific sales tax too.
Yeah, I'm saying that this is correct. If the adjuster didn't know that. And they entered in so many property.
Address in our app that we help with.
Pretty wild. So I geek out on this stuff, guys. I like saving money and I like wowing customers because it's really what it's about. So we'll wrap it up with. I said that three times. Now we're really going to wrap it up because we're going to go get lunch together.
Now.
Lead this with your homeowners and communicate what you can do and how.
You can help them out.
Go try it out. Download the app. One click code check a project that you have right now, or if you don't have any current sales, which hopefully you do, reference some ones that you have recently and find those items that are missing. Send an email to the adjuster with this and see if it works. My guess is it's gonna make you a sizable chunk of money. I mean, a supplement even, by the way. Supplement for the permit cost at the very least. And then test if you're gonna send.
A permit fee cost and just send a report in with the things you want to add. It's as easy as that. You're not gonna get blackskillisted by adding things.
No. No, you're not. So, great sales tool. Great tool to help homeowners get their house done to code. Great way to get you to get paid the full amount to do the right job. Yeah. That's all for this video. Thank you for joining us. We'll see you in the next one.
See you guys.
