Thank You for 100K ❤️ The Untold Story Behind My Channel

Adam Bensman built The Roof Strategist from unlisted consulting videos in 2015 to 100K subscribers by teaching roofing sales and team-building. His book The Roofing Sales Survival Guide hit #1 on Amazon, and his Roofing and Solar Reform Alliance now supports roughly 2,800 members. He credits his wife Sheena and a decade of free training for the channel's growth.

This all started 10 years ago, and it's a story I've never shared before until today. And I'm making this video because today I just hit a hundred thousand subs. And I want to say thank you because none of this would have happened without you. And you're going to see why in just a minute. If you've been following along or whether you're new, I'm really grateful to be supporting you and your journey, and thank you for supporting me in mine. Because it was in 2015 where this little channel called the Roof Strategist began. And believe it or not, it was actually all videos that were unlisted. In other words, they were private. No one could see them outside of YouTube because at that time, I began doing some consulting with roofing companies and I was working with them one on one. And I got really sick of working with owners where I would say, hey, you know, let's have you train your team on X, Y and Z. And the next week he'd be like, how'd it go? And they're like, ah, it's a great idea. I just got too busy. Well, we'll get to it soon. And I said, you know, listen, I love you, but I gotta get you out of the way. Why don't I make some videos and that way you can just share them with your team. But in 2015, I didn't know anything about the Internet or how to upload video files or how to get them on a website to. For my people. So what I did is I started a YouTube channel and I made them all unlisted so no one could see them. And that's why when you look back at the oldest videos, there's no intro. They're pretty scrappy because my audience was my clients. Well, after a couple of years, I decided to, you know, take a little bit of break from roofing. I'd been burned out one too many times. I've shared this story before. And the reason I was burned out is I was burned by roofing companies. I had bad experiences. I kept finding, like, roof. Like, in my mind, I just thought all roofers were terrible. I'm so grateful now to know that there are so many good ones. They're just the. The silent. They're actually the silent majority, in my opinion. And I'm privileged to work with them now inside rsra. But at that point, I got burned. I'm like, listen, I'm gonna. I'm gonna focus on being a direct response copywriter and sales consultant, which basically means I was a hitman for hire. And I worked with one of Oprah's top 50 most influential women, one of the fastest growing financial technology companies in the USA that's literally recently been featured in investment news. And I also worked with one of the fastest growing, if not the fastest growing, Amazon sellers, Mastermind group, helping them conceptualize. Conceptualize their brand and write their sales letter and all this stuff. And during that time, I said, all right, I'm just gonna flip these videos from private to public because I hope they help someone who was in my shoes. Because when I fell into the business, there was really no training. You just, like, figured it out on your own. And the industry changed my life. I said, I want to give this gift to others. So since I don't really need these anymore, I don't need them private. I hope they help someone. Now, fast forward a few months. I start getting the email notifications from YouTube saying, you got, you know, new comments. And I was like, okay, this is interesting. And people are like, dude, this is gold. This is helpful. When are you going to make more? Now, the first couple I ignored and I started seeing it more and more. And I shared them with my wife Sheena, who I have to thank for making all this happen because I wouldn't be here if it weren't for her. She says, adam, you should start making videos on Pub for the public on YouTube, teaching people how to sell roofs. And I said, why would I do that? Now, bear in mind, at this point, I had absolutely zero vision for a business. This was simply just a matter of should I make videos or should I not make videos? There was nothing, like, attached to this or any outcome that I was looking for. And Sheena says, you should do this because you're helping people. And that. That sunk in this industry changed my life. And I know that people like me who came into this industry with nothing and needing to make money, like I did when I came from being a massage therapist earning under $20,000 a year, I needed it. So I started making videos. It was because of Sheena. And when you go and watch some of the videos from 2015, my first ones, there's no intro because my audience was my private clients. Later on, I was fumbling my way through it and I was doing, like, selfie mode and Sheena, which I still do a lot of, if you haven't noticed. And. And then Sheena was filming with this little cheapy camera and like a little wired mic, which, by the way, was like 20ft long. It was like $12 from Amazon. The auto quality was terrible. You can even hear her giving me the countdown before videos like 3, 2, 1, go. It's hysterical. And I started making these videos. And you'll see, in fact, look at this, look at this. This is the actual analytics chart looking back into my YouTube channel, which I've never, ever shared publicly before. And you'll watch like years of doing the same thing and no one caring at all. Like marginal growth. Marginal growth. Marginal. I mean, I guess you could call flatline growth. And it felt so good to help people out. So then all of a sudden things start turning in an upward direction. I start getting some traction. And it was now when I realized, listen, I'm helping people, but I can help them even more. And that's what led to my very first product, which even just was it. Yesterday someone tagged me on Facebook using it. The marketing battle pack. My direct mail letters and door hanger letters. The things that I had created for myself and then made even better once I mastered the art. I shouldn't say mastered. No one ever actually mastered. Once I became really proficient at copywriting, I always consider myself a student over a master. And anyway, so I start making these videos and at this point I run into my bedroom, which was not my actual bedroom, it was a bedroom, my house, that was my office, and this little tiny whiteboard. And I wrote on there this big goal. And you'll see for a minute why it was the wrong goal. But I wrote on there, I will become the number one most followed roofing sales training in our industry. Now at this point, I had like 1 or 2000 subs. And it was a goal so big, like barely anyone knew about me that I was scared to tell anybody. Well, a couple years later, I don't remember if it was two or three years later, that goal became a reality. It was the number one most followed roofing sales training in the industry. And the reason that I say that that goal was the wrong goal is because it was all about me. And I realized the only way I got there was actually doing the opposite, is focusing all on you. And I had this mission and I've never shared this publicly, that anyone that would invest their time with me watching a video like you are right now, that you would feel believed in by me, even if we haven't met yet, because I do believe in you. You would have a breakthrough as a result of watching one of my videos. You would leave with a tactic or a strategy or a mindset shift that you could apply immediately in your life. And business to better yourself and make more money. And then as a result, believe in yourself. Because when you believe in yourself, that's when the real magic happens. And most of us in our lives have no one or very few people who actually believe in you. So I had this at my, at the front of my mind through all of it. And once I hit that goal, I was like, okay, you know, and I don't remember what, when, what milestone that was. I think it was under 20,000 subs. When that became a reality, I said it has to be about something bigger. And the most rewarding thing was actually seeing the comments that people posted, the emails that I got. And that's what inspired me to write my book, the Roofing Sales Survival Guide, how to Beat the Odds, Overcome Yourself and Win Big. Which funny enough, I released while John, who was working on this with me and Sheena, my wife and editor and helped polish the book. John was mid flight from England here and I just like said, hey, it's published and within was it one or two days became a number one bestseller on Amazon. By the way, I didn't have like a marketing plan or a strategy. People bought it because my videos helped and they started buying cases of books for their team and it was pure magic. And there's, to this day there's, there's nothing more rewarding than the stories that I get, the people that come up to me and shake my hand, the members that join RSRA and shared that they started their own company two years ago because of following a video that they start five years ago. Like, this is what is so rewarding. And my, my drive is to continually grow and support you. And you've seen my content evolve. I've experimented with new things. Some has been great, some hasn't. But you've been giving me the courage and the inspiration to better myself. Because if I look back, even six months from now, I see videos that I'm, I'm embarrassed of. Because if you're not embarrassed by the work that you put out a couple years ago, even a few months ago, it means you're not growing. And I've evolved what I was doing from being the go to for sales training, but, but I'm reinventing myself beyond the go to for sales training, beyond just the roof strategist, into someone the go to place to help train and grow roofing teams and roofing companies. And that's what led to me repackaging what I'm doing exclusively with the Roofing and Solar Reform Alliance. And I know it ruffled some feathers and it upset some people. But I know in my heart of hearts it is the biggest impact that I can leave, the biggest legacy I can leave on this industry. And I'm finding that through like we just finished our annual members only in person event which by the way, we're supporting like 2,800 members. We had 300 members show up for this event here, which was just so special. Seeing people come together in the room and and collaborate in a way that I've never seen and they've even reported never seen in the industry to again beyond just sales training, talking about the industry and what's happening, building future proof companies, managing your marketing to get results and becoming a strong leader in an entrepreneur. This is like marrying all of my loves and passions and things that I, quite frankly, I'm just really good at and avoiding the things that I'm not good at. I like to only talk about the things that I can actually bring value. So I just want to say thank you for supporting me and I hope to continue to support you and your team. And listen, I wouldn't be here without you. And I also hope that this video inspires you to realize that, you know, you people see success on the outside, but they don't see the path of a relentless pursuit. I am relentless. You are relentless. Greatness is achieved by doing the mundane and the same little things over and over and over again. Just like I shared in these analytics for years of making videos without seeing any results until one day it finally started to happen. Thanks for being here. It's been a magical journey for me. I hope it's been a magical journey for you and let's create some even more magic together. Until next time. I'll see you soon. Thanks for being here.
