Video Doorbells? What to Do When Canvassing Door to Door for Roofing Sales

Adam Bensman shows roofers how to handle video doorbells when canvassing. Knock instead of ringing, smile at the camera, and if they answer through the app, lean in and pitch with extra energy. Build familiarity first with letters and repeated visits so homeowners say yes instead of no.

It's a great tool. New guys, seasoned guys, owners are all using this across the US Canada, and even Australia. So welcome back and let's get into today's video. All right, how to approach the door. So you see the ring doorbell. You see a camera. What do you do? First and foremost, do not ring the bell. Knock. Why? You don't want to make it easy. When you ring that bell, it goes straight to their phone. They can answer it. It's easy for them to reject you. I know. Listen there. Motion activation sensors. There's notifications that come in, but if you knock on that door, it makes it one or two steps harder for that person to see the notification and then go to the live and then click to answer versus sometimes they're just going to show up. And another thing you'll notice here on the screen behind me, I say use a unique knock, not just some sort of unique cadence. It doesn't matter. It piques people's curiosity. I've done a lot of videos on curiosity. All right, so knock with a unique knock. Don't ring that bell. That's the first and simplest step of what to do when you approach the door. This brings me to the next one. Smile and be friendly. They may be watching you through the movement notification alert on their phone. We are always needing to think that we're on camera. In today's day and age, it is critically important that you not hide from the camera. Right there is the camera. If I know the camera's there and the door's here, do I want to stand like this? No, I might just be friendly, wave. Acknowledge it with some semblance of confidence and being friendly. If you acknowledge that ring, it shows that you're not there to do something or sell something. People know when you show up and you're like nervous or something and you're trying to avoid the camera, they are clearly aware that you are there for some sort of solicitation versus acknowledging it with confidence, like you're there on purpose. All right? So don't be afraid. Don't try to hide from this camera. All right? Smile and be friendly. Now what if they answer the door? Excuse me, the doorbell app or the Camera app. So they're not at the door, but they answer through the camera, wherever it is. A few fundamentals. Number one, fundamentals don't change. Use that slap formula the same way you would as if they were standing in front of you. Now a couple other things. We almost need to do the opposite of what we would do if they physically answered the door. When a homeowner physically answers the door, we are very mindful of our space and our body language to make sure they don't threatened. I am a very small statured man. I can get away with things. That a big complaint I hear from some of the bigger guys I train. Bigger in height, bigger in girth. That'll be like, man, you know, people are threatened by me because I'm 64 and £300. Well, guess what? All you need to do is create a little more space, blade your stance. People don't feel threatened. But here's the funny thing on the doorbell, we want to create that friendly vibe. And remember, they're looking on their little phone. So what do we do instead? We lean in confidence and clarity and a smile on our face to make it easy for the homeowner to see me as I go through my slap formula and pitch. And I'm just going to pretend that I'm leaning in to make it easier. Like if I was on FaceTime with my family, right? So they can see my face. They can see that I'm non threatening. This broadcast an air of power and confidence that allows you to connect versus if the camera's here, I just want you. If you're viewing this watch. If you're listening to the podcast, I'm standing back from the camera. If I'm back here and I'm like, oh, hi there, I'm. My name's Adam and the reason I'm stopping by. No, lean in. Oh, hey there. Lean into the camera, wherever it is. If it's up high, get on your tippy toes. If it's straight ahead of you, get in there and bring that confidence, vibrancy and energy in friendly nature right into the lens and behave as if that homeowner is right there. All right, now this brings us to a big question. Excuse me, Big issue. We hear say, hey. But it makes it so easy for the homeowner to reject me. Right? Because they're on the app. Get off my doorstep. The answer is twofold. Yes, it is. And it may happen. This is sales guys and gals. There's no magic bullet. This will come up. But there are a few Things you can do. Because this is why we need to go from what I call cold door knocking to warm door knocking. Now what do I mean by that? Cold is when the in the homeowner's mind is you show up and they say, who are you? These are people that don't know you, don't recognize you. This is what happens when we go through one neighborhood. Knock, knock, knock. Canvas hit this neighborhood, that neighborhood. Every time we're putting ourselves at a disadvantage and climbing a mountain of unfamiliarity. Who in the heck are you? We want to go to warm door knocking where that homeowner sees the logo, sees our face, sees our truck, and they think to themselves, you look familiar. Now I want to ask you this, which one is more threatening? A complete stranger showing up at your door or someone that looks familiar? Duh, the stranger. So that is why we want to use the multi touch approach. So how do we do that? How do we go from cold to warm, from who the heck are you to you look familiar. We do this by working elements of the friendship formula. By the way, Jack Schaefer, I learned this from him after I started this approach. It validated it. Jack Schaefer is an FBI agent who is in charge of identifying spies in the US and getting them to flip and spy on their home country for the US and he talks about this friendship formula. It's four things. Proximity, duration, frequency and intensity. These are the elements. When we use multiple touches, we're in the same area, we start to become familiar, which familiarity is non threatening. So the multi touch approach that I teach, knock on the door, leave a letter at the door, send a letter in the mail, show back up, work that neighborhood. They see your trucking. Now they see you up on roofs. They might see yard signs. You're starting to get jobs. You have to stick and stay in the same neighborhood. Which brings me to point 2, over and over and over again. Stay in that neighborhood, all right? Work those multiple touches that give that person an impression of you. The personal letters, handwritten, excuse me, hand signed, plain paper, no logos. All right? Working in that same neighborhood over and over again. And then don't take no as the final no. Listen, the third thing here, don't take no as that final no. I've shared multiple stories of my own of being in neighborhoods having people say no. And why? Because they said, who the heck are you? The reality is they didn't trust me. But as I was in the neighborhood and I did his roof and her roof and her roof, they saw me on this one doing an inspection. They saw me meet with the adjuster. This one's getting installed next week. That one got installed two weeks ago. As that traction builds, you will flip those nos into yeses. And the thing that's costing you money is going through the same, excuse me, not the same, different neighborhoods over and over again. You're not able to turn those no's into yeses because there's not that familiarity. So don't let that ring camera do anything to deter you. Because when you build that level of familiarity in the neighborhood and you treat that person like a person, even if it's through the lens of the camera, you will turn those nos to yeses. Listen, I'm going to show it to you with this proof on the screen behind me. I want you to know that any testimonial or success story that I ever share or talk about, I do not ask for. These come voluntarily. And these ones behind me, these five that I'll be showing you here to prove the efficacy that this strategy can work for you is by showing that it's worked others. Alright, so Ryan reached out. He says, I tried something of yours today to overcome the objection where they asked for a card and they'll call me when they're ready. I acknowledge what they said, like you mentioned and asked if they had any objection if I hop up on the roof for a quick inspection. I ended up doing the inspection and now as bad as he sees it, he wants to put in a claim. Thanks, man. So my point is no doesn't always mean no. We might get two or three no's till we get to a yes. Next, we've got Tim. Tim, I shared this testimonial in another video recently. This was incredib recent Tim said, there's a large church in my hometown that I'm stopping by for months, but I've been unable to connect with anyone similar to a camera. Not able to catch someone in person. They may not want to come to the door. They might see you, they might ignore you on purpose. Right. She says, after getting your battle pack, I left a letter at the door and followed up by mailing a letter. The multi touch approach I teach. And he says, I got a call back from the maintenance manager asking about a roof repair. Using the explanations you teach, I was able to explain how the damage may be covered by insurance. He filed a claim. Insurance ended up buying the roof and the agreement was signed yesterday. I couldn't have done this without your training and your material. So I know there's no camera here, but the concepts are identical. No contact was made. He'd been trying to get this church for months. He was essentially getting non verbal nos because they were ignoring him until he worked the system, develop that familiarity and the persistence and it worked. Savannah direct mail letters are working wonders. I've gotten 10 contingencies in the last month just from letters. It's been a game changer for myself and the company. So again, when people aren't coming to the door, you might get people that simply won't do it, but you can still have an opportunity to make that sale by using the direct mail letters. Specifically the one like the sorry I missed you letter that explains that you stopped by and couldn't make you know you missed each other. You send the letter and you show back up. And it's clearly been working for Savannah and Lucien. He said just to leave behind letters are worth it. Combine that with the battle pack with his podcast and YouTube channel and he says, I opened up an entire neighborhood of old damage using that material. Final one, another gentleman named Adam. He says if it weren't for Adam, I probably wouldn't be making more than six figures in my first year. And he says I spent roughly 500 on his material. By the way, I have programs. The battle pack alone is even cheaper than that. And he says it literally landed me a job in four days due to the postal service taking three days to deliver. My point is he had all his money back in the first four days. Work the system and the system will work for you. Be persistent. Alright, so what do you do now? I want you to get prepared of how you should be approaching neighborhoods in general, but how you should be approaching those ring cameras. And we just walked through it. One, approach, knock, don't ring the bell. Right. Two, if they do answer through the app, treat them as if it's the real person standing here. Lean in, show that you're confident and comfortable. And I know it's different than if they're at the door. We have to create space, right? But we don't want to do is stand back. We want to to lean in, be friendly, let them see us because that's how we build trust and confidence. All right? And then again, use the quick summary here. I just want you to remember these three points. One, use that multi touch approach. Leave a letter at the door. Send a letter at the mail whether you make contact or not. Okay. You can create your own or you can use mine from the marketing battle pack. There's links in the video description or Podcast description should you be interested. Number two Work the same neighborhoods over and over. When people start to see you, or if they've seen you on the ring two or three times and they see their notifications, they may have a higher likelihood of answering at some point because they're really curious. Why is this guy so persistent? What's he here for? I've seen his truck in the neighborhood. I've seen his material at the door. So there's got to be a reason. Alright, and then number three, don't take the first no as that final no. You've watched it work. You've watched Atlant church deals. You've watched. You've heard my stories. You've heard stories of sales reps on the channel. The first no isn't the last no. The first no just means I don't trust you yet. Alright now let's wrap up with some recommended resources.
