The speaker discusses a structured approach to managing underperformance in team members by evaluating circumstances, skills, and will, using a practical example to illustrate the process. There is only one speaker and no indication of a conversation involving Adam Hayley.
We ran through this sort of circumstance, skill, will. So this would be the process that I would use. When you've got somebody that, like, if we use James's case, for example, that might not be, like, up to par, is you want to start with circumstance, then go to skill, then go to will. So step one would be like, dude, you know, I've noticed it's taken you two days to reply to this person. Everything okay? Yeah, it's fine. What's the reason for the two days you've been really busy. Has something happen at home? Whatever it is you get to the bottom of, like, is it a circumstantial issue, a situational? Then you try and eliminate that and work with them through it. If they're like, oh, actually, my missus has lost her job and we're doing this, and you go, okay, cool, I'll give you a free pass this time. Once you've eliminated that, the second review, seven to 14 days later is then like, is it a skill set issue? So could it be. If somebody's not replying to people, could it be, like, time management? And it turns out that they're just really overwhelmed? Then it's this lack of skill set when it comes to time. So you sit, you work with them on their diaries and so on. Could it be a communication thing that they just keep leaving, like, open loops, which is why their clients are just constantly replying to them? They get overwhelmed. Can you teach them how to, like, close loops in conversations? And then the last one is, once you've gone through the circumstance and then you've dealt with the skill, the final one is, then it's down to their will, like, do they want to do it? Maybe his value is just, you know, his values are different to yours. And then you have that question, like, are they the right fit for the business?
