You Must Read These 3 Books to get from $0 to $20k per month

Adam Hayley recommends three business books for personal trainers and online coaches building to $20k monthly revenue. He breaks down which book applies to each income stage and explains how reading shaped his own business growth.
These three books completely changed my business and helped me get through each plateau that I had when growing it. I'm Adam Haley and I help personal trainers get off the gym floor and build their businesses fully online. So I'm just going to come out and say it. Most coaches do not read enough. Whether that's through real books, whether it's through Kindles, whether it's audiobooks, whatever works for you, chances are you probably don't consume enough good quality content. It's easy to sit there and scroll TikToks and so on. That's not going to help give you the skills, the experience required to build the business that you want. I remember reading that the world's most successful investor, Warren Buffett, spends around 80% of his time to thinking and reading. While that's probably a bit extreme and I would like you to take action, it shows the importance that he puts in giving himself space to read, accrue new knowledge. Bill Gates, for example, was famous for his Think weeks where he'd literally block out an entire week, go by himself, lock himself into a hotel or a cabin in the woods or some creepy thing like that, and he would literally just read and think. More recently, if you think of Dan Martell, author of Buy Back youk Time, I remember when I was chatting to him and he said to me, what do you think most successful people have in common? They have libraries. And it's true. You know, Dan Martell himself has a huge library. Myself, I'm not putting myself into the same ilk as these guys. You know, have a huge bookshelf downstairs, books all over the house. A lot of my time is spent reading and it's not for enjoyment. Trust me. I would rather sit and watch a Netflix show just like you. But I know that I'm not going to get the answers I need in order to grow my business from that. The big takeaway here before I run through these books is start reading more. So let's start with this book. So if you are at 0 to 10k per month, this is the book that you need. This for me was a game changer. So most people I find in that 0 to 10k bracket, they get Shiny Object syndrome. They start something, they stop something, they think it must be another platform, it must be LinkedIn that I need, it must be TikTok that I need. It must be this secret script that I need. They rarely just do the work long enough. You know, they get Shiny Object syndrome. They get distracted. When I read this, it just gave me permission to Go all in on one thing. Instead of trying to spread myself thinly across everything, all different platforms, different content types and so on, I just narrowed down, found exactly what worked. The second thing that it helped me to do is learn to say no. So I now had this filter that when I was getting given opportunities and asked to go to certain places or I was, you know, messaged on Instagram with this great opportunity, I was able to just ask myself, okay, the one thing that I want to achieve is X, is this opportunity going to move me closer to that goal or further away from it? And it became a filter that just made it very, very easy to turn down opportunities that might have seemed exciting at the time, but ultimately we're going to be a distraction. So if you've never read it, Gary Keller the one thing I think is a game changer for anybody that's doing less than 10k per month. Next up, when you're between 10 and 20k per month at that stage, chances are you've probably got a coach on board, maybe you've got an assistant, maybe you're looking at outsourcing sales, or you've got like perhaps a video editor or a videographer on board. So you start to build, you know, a bit of a team and it starts to come away from being just a one man band posting on socials to now starting to be a real small business. And that's where Traction will help you get through that sort of period and into the next bracket. So traction is all about helping you to turn your idea, your one man band business into, into a legitimate company. So it starts with helping you to formulate an organization chart. Start thinking about people's roles. It has you start thinking about what are the values that I want, you know, my team to embody. It's basically systemizing your business into a little machine and a process that ultimately it's going to need if you want to get through to the next income bracket. And then the final book that I think is a game changer is 10x is easier than 2x. Now this would be reserved for those of you that are at least 20k per month, probably even more than that if I'm honest. So most of these books, like if, if I was to read Traction when I was at 2k per month, it wouldn't really made much sense to me. If I was a 7, 8, 9, 10k a month and I read 10x is easier than 2x again, I might take some value from it. But it's not like it's Speaking to me. Whereas when you start getting to those larger numbers, each of these books is going to make sense. So I would honestly do it in this order. And don't skip. If you're at 0 to 10, focus on the one thing. If you're at 10 to 20, focus on traction and building the solid foundations of a business. When you're over 20k per month, you've got a team, and so on. 10x is easier than 2x by Dan Sullivan and Benjamin Hardy. And this book is all about you realizing that for you to get to the next level, you can't just keep doing the things that you're currently doing, which is the opposite of what you should be doing at 0:10. So that's why the one thing is really important at that stage. At this stage, it's about thinking bigger, thinking 10x. Hence the 10x is easier than 2x. And it's basically you as a business owner starting to work out that what you' zone of geniuses. Where should your time be spent? There's the classic Pareto principle that 80% of the results come from 20% of the work done, meaning that 80% of your work doesn't really push the business forwards. And it's just that the 20% that we need to zero in on. This book is all about you as the business owner, identifying what that is and then being able to ruthlessly remove or delegate everything else in the 80% so that you can focus on your 20%. So for me, my 20% is all around building the personal brand. It's the content side of things and it's the internal trainings within the portal. The 80% is the sales calls, the admin, the finances. The operation is all about stuff that I have a team to take care of. While I'll be sort of like front stage, quote unquote, for training modules and YouTube and so on. So those are the three books that I would recommend that you start reading. The one thing if you're at 0 to 5 traction by Gino Wickman. If you're between 10 and 20, I want to systemize and build a real business. And then thirdly would be 10x is easier than 2x. Dan Sullivan and Benjamin Hardy. Hope this has been useful. As said, if you're an online coach, you've got an unfair advantage if you do dedicate time to reading. I mentioned it earlier. I don't do it for fun. I do it because it genuinely gives me insights that enable me to push the business forwards and get to the levels that I'm playing at. So I'm interested in. Maybe you have read a book that's been pivotal or transformational for you. If you have one, drop it in the comments below. I would love to hear it because I'm always on the lookout for the next reading.
