What It's Like to Be a Consultant | Dorothy from RecruitFirst Singapore

Dorothy, a senior consultant at RecruitFirst Singapore, walks through recruitment work: talking to clients about hiring needs, following up with candidates, and building relationships. Hello, my name is Dorothy and I am an Executive Senior Consultant at Recruitfest. My job requires me to speak to a lot of people, both face-to-face and virtually. This can range from clients sharing their hiring needs or following up with our candidates after interviews. My day-to-day also includes many interactions with my colleagues as we always work as a team. There is a common misconception that recruiters take a portion of the candidate's salary. This causes many people to apply to companies on their own. This belief is not true. Employers reach out to agencies like ours and pay a separate fee. Your salary as a candidate is not affected at all. Applying for a job through an agency increases your chance of landing a job. As recruiters, our long-standing relationship with with companies and key decision makers provide us with unraveled insight on what a company is looking for beyond what is shown in the job description. This includes intimate information on the job market, the company culture, and team dynamics. Our expertise not only assists you in making a more informed decision, but it also greatly increases your chance of getting hired for the job. Impact on me, but I always revisit my experience with a 70-year-old candidate. I have helped her to secure a job as an office cleaner. After her first day at work, she called me and spoke to me in Mandarin to express her gratitude. She said, "Thank you for helping me find a job despite my age and illiteracy. You have helped me find purpose in life again. I feel valuable now." I always look back to this heartwarming moment as a motivation in my work. Definitely team spirit. One of my concerns before starting in the industry was that it meant constantly competing with colleagues in a cutthroat environment for the highest sales. However, the strong bonds that I've been able to form with my colleagues over the past 7 years at RecruitFirst are testament against this myth. In interviews, we openly discuss the role's requirements with our candidates. While our goal is to help clients in hiring, It is also crucial to actively listen to candidates. To understand the job market, we prioritize regular meetings with clients and engaging with dozens of hiring managers weekly. Jobs provides people with the means to earn a living and support families. My profession allows me to match people with their passions and help organizations move. The satisfaction of aligning candidates with clients is unmatched, and being able to earn commissions definitely adds to the win-win experience for me.
