The tipping point for artificial intelligence is here.
It used to be that AI could do things like write an email or an essay, but you could tell it was never as good as the human made version.
And now suddenly, generative AI is a lot better. You've probably heard of ChatGPT, a generative AI platform from the company OpenAI, and maybe you've played with it, asking it say, like me, to write a version of the Gettysburg Address in HBR style. These little experiences are part of a seismic shift in the business world. This technology, still in its infancy, can already write software, pass professional exams, write HBS style cases in seconds. It can pass for human at superhuman speed.
Plus, this technology is improving. The more we use it as leaders, it's hard to stay ahead. Generative AI can threaten your business model, or it can open new opportunities. How should you respond?
I'm Adi Ignatius, editor in chief of Harvard Business Review.
