Turn Nervousness into Excitement: Unlock Your Confidence #shorts

AJ Hoge argues that deep breathing fails when you're already panicked. Instead, convert nervous energy into excitement through peak-emotion activities: jump, smile big, shout, dance, play upbeat music. This redirects your body's arousal into enthusiasm so you can speak clearly and deliver with energy.

What I have found is that when you start getting stressed, it's almost impossible to calm down. Because a lot of advice you hear, but people like for public speaking or a job interview, they'll tell you, oh, well, just, you know, take deep breaths, meditate. And that's good to do if you're already somewhat calm. But if your heart is pounding and you are stressed and you feel that tightness in your throat, it's too late for most people to calm down. So what I find instead is once you've got to just change the energy, you can't. When you're trying to do deep breathing, you're trying to push down that energy, right? Instead, you just have to change it. You change it from nervousness and fear into excitement and enthusiasm. The thing that does work is to do peak emotion activities, right? For example, very simple. You play exciting music, rock music, whatever, and you jump around with your hands in the air. You're looking up, you put a big smile on your face, even if it's fake. Maybe you're nervous, but put a fake smile on your face and you say, yes, yes, yes. And you, you can, if you're alone, you can scream and shout and dance around. But the second thing it does is it takes all that nervous energy and kind of moves it, changes it, shifts it to positive energy, enthusiasm. So this does work. And I've used this myself many times giving speeches. When I started doing this, then I would go up onto the stage and give a speech. And instead of being nervous, I'd be excited and high energy and enthusiastic. Hey, how's it going? And my brain kind of turned back on. I was able to remember and think what I was doing. My voice became more normal. You know, I was a little maybe too high energy sometimes in the beginning, but that's better than freezing. It's way better than freezing. So that works.
