Chapters
I married at 31 and was divorced at 42. I thought I married for life, but clearly life had other ideas. And at first I wished that I had never married, but as time went by, I learned so much from the experience. It really taught me about who I was and what my patterns were, what my triggers were. There was so much richness that came from this relationship that as much as I was sad that it was over, I was grateful grateful for having had the experience because it taught me a lot about myself. Do I wish that I could have gone about it in a different way? Probably. But at the same time, having not gone through that experience, I probably wouldn't have met the guy that's sitting in my living room and who I've been with for the last 12 years. So if you are just coming out of a divorce, I think the greatest gift that you can give to yourself is to really understand what it is that contributed from your end to the situation of the relationship. And it's not an easy thing to do, but if you give yourself the time to grieve, then you have the chance to go back and say, okay, now I know this wasn't great, and it takes two to tango, so how did I contribute? What were my behaviors, my habits, my triggers? So that you can learn those for yourself for your future relationships so that you don't make the same mistakes twice and you create something even better.
