How To Raise Your Rates As A Copywriter

Alex Cattoni walks copywriters through four steps to raise rates: build a portfolio showing full-funnel strategy, own a clear niche instead of being a generalist, develop expertise in storytelling and psychology that AI can't match, and over-deliver to earn referrals and justify higher prices.

Hey posse, what's up? It's Alex coming at you this week with something that is a big question all copywriters in the beginning stages of their career ask. How in the hell do you build a sustainable copywriting business that gives you the life, freedom and income you crave without being overworked, underpaid and totally burnt out? Well, I am here to tell you it is possible. And honestly, it can happen pretty damn quickly too if you if you focus on learning the right skills to pair with your copywriting skills. In fact, many of my students are able to turn their side hustles into full time businesses in less than a year and some have even hit six figures in as little as six months. Now, of course, I'm not saying that those results are common. They are a direct reflection of the work you are willing to put in and how much you're willing to put yourself out there and take some risks. But I can tell you this. If you follow the four steps that I outline in this video and you remain committed to the process, you can absolutely get there too. But first, if you're new to the crew, welcome. My channel is here to teach you the ins and outs of copywriting and marketing. So make sure to subscribe below if that's your jam. And don't forget to hit that bell to be notified when my next video goes live. You do not want to miss any of the juicy videos that I have coming for you. All right, now let's dive into the very first step you need to take to become a highly paid copywriter. Number one, create a marketing focused portfolio. So I'm going to go ahead and assume that if you're already watching this video, you already have some basic knowledge of copywriting. Maybe you are self taught from watching videos like this one. Maybe you took some online classes or courses, or maybe you're one step ahead of most and have already taken a comprehensive and practical copywriting coaching program. But no matter where you are at on your journey, in order to be taken seriously as a copywriter, you need to have a portfolio point blank period. In the words of Nikki Lorenzo, Creative director and copywriter at Ogilvy, one of the biggest advertising agencies in the world. When asked if having a portfolio is important for copywriters, she said, you have to have one. It's not important. It's like you have to have one. It's not even a question. If you don't have a portfolio, what are you even doing? Unless you have a friend who works at the agency and recommends you, you need a portfolio to get in, to even get looked at. But I'll take that one step farther and say you don't just want any portfolio. If your portfolio is a hodgepodge of random stuff you've written, I hate to say it, but it's probably doing more harm than good. Business owners are busy people and they only have a quick 10 minutes, 15 minutes to look at you and say, does this person know what they're talking about? So it doesn't have to be beefy. But in order to stand out to the highest paying clients, you need to demonstrate that you do more than just write copy. You want to show them that you actually know and understand the entire marketing process that you can write, strategize and ideate an entire sales funnel that you can capture new leads, nurture those leads, convert those leads into paying customers, and then retain those customers and increase customer lifetime value. And I know that sounds like a lot, but trust me, businesses will pay premium if you can showcase that you understand how to do it. That and that is why having a great marketing focused portfolio that is strategically organized and really clean and simple is such an important first step to take. And if you need help building a portfolio that your dream clients will absolutely drool over, complete with the copy assets for every single touch point of the marketing funnel. All right, so now you've got a professional and marketing focused portfolio. The next step to becoming a highly paid copywriter is to number two, own your skills. So one of the best things I ever did as a freelancer was to stop offering to do everything for my clients. In the beginning, I would offer my clients project management, social media management, content writing, list management, video editing, blog editing, and the list goes on and on. I was so worried about losing clients that I would offer to do basically whatever they needed, including low value tasks that I was definitely overqualified for. But as soon as I started owning the fact that I was a product pretty good copywriter and that is all I offered. I was able to work in my genius zone and felt way less burnt out. And I was able to charge higher rates for this high value skill set. Then when approaching new clients, I was really specific in the way that I could help them. I write emails and sales pages to help you monetize your list and traffic. A jack of all trades is a master of none. You have heard it before. So my advice to you is to own your skills and get crystal clear on exactly how you plan to serve your future clients. So ask, what do you offer? Will you offer copy, content or both? What is your ideal niche? It could be personal development, online education, beauty, health, fitness, real estate, and the list goes on and on. What do you truly enjoy researching, learning and writing about? And that's what you should pick as your starter niche. Because remember, you're going to have to write about this topic like every day for the foreseeable future, so you probably should enjoy it. Next, ask yourself, who do you want to serve? Do you want to help Coaches, entrepreneurs, authors, female led brands, local businesses, natural and sustainable products, SaaS sites, E commerce companies? Try to get specific on who your ideal client is. And then lastly, ask yourself, how do you want to serve them? What services will you offer? Do you want to do blog posts, sales copy, video scripts, emails, website copy, social media, homepages, ad? There are so many different types and mediums of copywriting out there. Now hold up, don't get overwhelmed because this doesn't mean that you won't do anything else. And it also doesn't mean that you can't pivot at any time. I have definitely pivoted in my career, but getting clear on this will help you position yourself as the person who can help your clients achieve their goals. All right, now onto the third step to become a highly paid copywriter. If step number two is to own your skills, step number three is to hone your skills. Once you own your skills, yep, it's time to build up your experience, your authority and your expertise. Because here's the thing, you already know this. I don't have to tell you, AI is here and it is here to stay. And yes, it can do some pretty impressive things. It can write a mediocre email or social post. And really that's why you shouldn't settle on just being mediocre. In fact, I had the opportunity to ask Seth Godin how copywriters can stand out today. And and he basically said the same thing I'm telling you right now. He said mediocre Copywriting is doomed. But listen, this isn't to scare you. It's like anything else that's being replaced by technology. Mediocre bookkeepers are being replaced by do it yourself software like FreshBooks, HoneyBook or QuickBooks. But that doesn't mean you don't hire a legit professional when it comes time to file your taxes. Mediocre graphic designers are being replaced by tools like Canva. But that doesn't mean you don't hire a great designer to design your websites and social graphics. While it's true that there are gonna be some businesses and brands that will choose to get by with AI, only trust that their copy will be mediocre at best. If businesses want mediocre results, they'll use a standardized template or some AI tool. If they want masterful results, they will hire an expert. And I've said it so many times, but there is so much crappy, irrelevant and unreliable content being published right now on the Internet. And that is really great news for you because smart brands and businesses are doubling down on their messaging so they can rise up above the noise and, and they are looking for real copywriters who can help them. And that is why I think there's actually more opportunity right now for copywriters than ever before. AI can't do everything that a great copywriter brings to the table. Creative strategizing, big picture marketing. Creative messaging that guides customers through an entire and cohesive brand experience. Using empathy and storytelling and psychology and powerful human drivers. This is the single biggest secret to making yourself invaluable to the highest paying clients. And again, if you need help becoming absolutely AI proof, then definitely check out my eight week copywriting program, the Copy Posse launch files. Because I will walk you through all of this and so much more. All right, my last tip for becoming a highly paid copywriter is number four, over deliver. Get results, get referrals, raise your rates and repeat. Okay, that's like five steps in one. But at the end of the day, it really doesn't matter how impressive your portfolio is or how great you are at positioning yourself as an expert. Yes, those things will definitely help you get noticed by those high paying dream clients. But the truth is in your work, after you land these clients, you have to deliver the results and more importantly, over deliver. Never settle right where you're at. If you're in the business of marketing, one thing is for sure, market is always changing and there is always something that you can learn or improve upon. So if you want to be the best, then keep getting better at what it is that clients will pay top dollar for, then you need to get into this habit of always learning, learning and improving, bringing fresh ideas to the table, asking for feedback and monitoring results. This is the key to being able to confidently raise your rates and build a business based purely on referrals. Remember, great clients, no other great clients. So you really want to impress them and then get those referrals right over deliver, get results, get referrals, raise your rates and repeat. This is exactly how I built my business up to $300,000 a year before I ever started the Copy Posse without sending a single cold outreach email. And I'll show you exactly how to do all of that inside my Copy Posse Launch Files program. This is my highest level copywriter training with proven tools, timeless formulas and all the community support you need to ignite your copywriting business.
