Revolutionizing Skin Care: Andy Hnilo's Journey to Healthier Skin
10 Dec 2024 · 45 min
This is a podcast interview (Dec 2024) where Andy Hnilo tells his life story and explains the origins and philosophy of his clean-skin brand. Key elements: Andy's teenage struggles with cystic acne led him to herbal remedies and clay masks; a severe pedestrian accident in spring 2011 (compound jaw fracture, multiple broken ribs, collapsed lung) catalyzed an intense recovery that included DIY topical formulations and nutrient-dense nutrition; early word-of-mouth and a February 1, 2014 Bulletproof Radio appearance led to a product being sold in Dave Asprey's store in June 2014; Andy built Alatura (Aloe tura) — a nutrient-first, water-free, botanical-forward skincare line (signature clay mask, night cream, gold serum) emphasizing avoidance of parabens, phthalates, synthetic fragrances and other common toxicants. The interview also covers Andy's sobriety, supporting his mother's cancer journey, and ongoing product development (sunscreen sample pending).

If you are experiencing the results and seeing them and lifting you out of an insecurity and building your confidence, those are things that stick with you for the rest of your life.
Welcome to Metabolic Matters podcast. Let's meet today's guest. Welcome back everybody, for what I know is going to be a really beautiful, vital conversation with someone that I just got to meet for the very first time in person this past summer at an event called Momentum in the Mountain, put on by two incredible humans, Stephen and summers out there in the beautiful Shenandoah Valley in Virginia. I'd never been to this part of the country. Shame on me for that. And I had the absolute privilege of being amongst a few amazing other lectures. There was Dr. Eric Berg, which many people know. There was Dr. David Diamond, a really well known researcher, especially in kind of debunking myths around lipids, you know, cholesterol myths, and then this beautiful human that we're going to talk about here in just a moment. So I will tell you a little bit more about him in just a second. But I didn't know about his products. So what was really cool is his products were when I met first and the story on the street among really highly influential people and people that I know and respect of them being really good people to vet and curate quality products. It caught my attention through that group of people. It caught my attention through the fact that I am now a woman of a certain age. I am now a post menopausal badass who wants to age well. I do not want chemicals, I do not want injectables. I want to age with as much natural vigor and vitality as possible. And I want to use really quality, curated products, knowing what we're going to be diving into today, that my skin is the largest organ of both absorption and elimination. So I need to handle it as such. So without that, with that knowledge, I was already excited about a product and didn't even know when I showed up at this event who this product was attached to. But when I Met this human being, his light, his vitality, his essence. The love that he is and the love that he admits is so, so beautiful. I can't wait for you to feel his energy. But, Andy, I always mispronounce your last name, so I am not even going to try to slaughter it. I want you to say it when you come in. But I know you as the precious Andy, the founder of this incredible skincare line which we're going to dive into today. But it is a delight to. To see you again and be with you here on a conversation about something so important and so underrepresented. So welcome. Let's talk about all things again. And skin health and skin power.
Well, yes, Dr. Naysha Winters, it is an absolute honor to be joining you on this show. I've been looking forward to this for several weeks now. And yeah, you nailed it. It was just sitting down. What, you know, listening to you speak. You know, a little nervous because I went on after you, but then the nerves got away because you were speaking my language. You had sodium benzoate circle. You started talking about the taxane components. And I go, wait a minute, let me. Who is this? And I just sat down and just got, just was, you know, mouth open, what? Listening to you go into something that I am so passionate about. And it's toxin removal from all products that we consume and apply topically to our skin. And it's everywhere. And the thing is, it's just looking back retroactively throughout my life. It's been there since I was 16, 17, and those are very interesting things to look back at. It was a grab and turn guy back then, reading labels. Sure. It was for protein, fat, calories. I was an athlete in high school, so wanting to grow. And I was a baseball player. So I assigned a baseball scholarship to UC Berkeley. So a 62168 put on 23 pounds. It was up to 191 freshman year, but it was through dorm food. I had very embarrassing back acne, small cystic acne that looked like mosquito bites. When you have relatively clear skin, that's the worst in my opinion because it's the first thing everyone sees. You wake up starting the day off with this. Dang, you know, we've all been there and it's not ideal. So I, it just, you know, and then I go to school and then I go to, you know, change in my locker room. Teammates wearing me out and, you know, it's just part of what teammates do in the locker room. But it really affected my confidence. I Mean, that was something looking back. Yeah, I remember how that felt and I'm glad I do. But I remember one day on an off day walking down Shattuck Avenue in Berkeley, California. I went into this little herbalist store and bought my first Flora Aqueous Silico horsetail extract supplement. But in the process, this gentleman described blood building in ingredients. And I left there in the importance of consuming whole foods. But at 18 years old, buying that, even learning what horsetail was, you know, loaded in silica for hair and, and just, you know, the skin benefits too. But I left there and went from, I think I was using Claricel, Neutrogena, I think Noxima, all the things, right? And went to Dove. Five ingredients. Two of them were coconut derived surfactants that at that point, 18 years old, 24, 25 years ago, I just, it resonated from head to toe. I was still using PER plus, but my skin cleared up. And then I, you know, started eating, you know, the tuna and spinach, whole wheat back then because I thought it was, you know, that was still reading Men's Health magazine, but it was better than the pizza, the burgers, the soft serve ice cream and just over time, you know, cleaning up my supplements in purity though. 18 led to 19, 19 led to 20, 21. If you, if you are experiencing the results and seeing them and lifting you out of an insecurity and building your confidence, those are things that stick with you for the rest of your life.
Holy cow. And you know what's so amazing to me? I mean, I, first of all, I have so many colleagues, so many friends asking me for their children, for their teenage children, their daughters, their sons who are now suffering with exactly what you said, just the sort of embarrassment of their skin. And they're using all the things over the counter, some prescription from dermatologists and some even go to the levels of using pharmaceuticals such as antibiotics and things known as Accutane, which are absolute. I mean, unfortunately, it's, it kind of sets people up to be a, you know, a possible vulnerable person to having to see somebody like me in the future, which we never want. And so for if someone's listening and knows that they've taken or given their children, this, this is not a blame game. This is just an awareness there are better, safer ways out there. And it's never too late to clean up any damage that's been done and to prevent ever needing those harmful substances to begin with. But Andy, how the heck does a 16 year old guy like even give any in input like any thought to this. I mean I can't imagine any 16 year old that I would have known at that time or even today that would have even had the clarity to walk into a shop like that. What drove you to that? Where did that instinct come from?
I was 18. Was. It was, yes. Still it was. Man, that, that was a feeling. I mean if you're in that situation where you will do anything, it's been a while, but I remember that, you know, turning your back, not wanting to turn around and change and take your shirt off. The level of insecurity you will go to any lengths to mitigate, remove, find a solution to, to solve that problem of insecurity, getting poked at, getting made fun of. I, I wish I, I wish I could explain. I was just on a walk, you know, exploring Berkeley. It's a trip, it's a very interesting city, but also a lot of health conscious, you know, earthy people that are, you know, in looking back now, I mean that is just, it's, it's synonymous with everything that I'm about. Natural elements that can heal our largest organ. But yeah, it's just, I'm. I don't know what it was, I was just on a walk, popped in, but I was, had been into supplements and so I. But it was the gnc, you know, wheat or protein, you know, whey.
And that was more about the buck reaction, not the skin reaction at that time.
Right.
Ask me.
Right.
But I, I'm sorry, I'm sorry, there's a little delay there. But Andy, one of the things I think is so wild is your early life. Like a lot of these things you did, you did them for to be a better performer or athlete or to cover kind of the superficial physical qualities. Those were things maybe vanity or just pride that was pushing this. You even got into the world of of course being, moving into, moving towards professional sportsmanship. But also didn't you get into some either acting or modeling as well? So of course then the whole world is looking at you and you needed to look a certain way. How much do you think the external expectations of how you were perceived in the world impacted you at that time?
It did, but I loved it though. It was part of a big challenge. You know, the entertainment industry is extremely competitive and I couldn't afford the top tier photographers. So I did my best to look like my photos at the audition physically in front of the casting directors, you know. So I took that preparation before a week of auditions, just like an athletic event, you know what I Mean, that means. Sounds funny you're saying it, but I would. I had this Sunday mask that I. It was four clays. I think at that point. I had vitamin C, but I had a preexisting clay mask that once this accident happened, I started tinkering away with it. Long story made short, ended up being the clay mask, but I did. I. It's just something I would start doing. My first bentonite clay mask, I swear was 19 or 20 years old from Aztec Healing Clay. Incredible product, but it's one ingredient. So I just would, you know, I went around, met Jason Eton from greenclays.net and found a different source. But in that process, I mean, he's written books on clays. Zeolite, pyrophylite. I light rail. And I mean, he just went. We had phone calls just going over, you know, the different complexities of the benefits. Internally, zeolite, not necessarily the best topically, but incredibly effective for removing heavy metals internally. So I just kind of went back, put that aside. But on the. For the clay mask, I mean, we had rasool, kale and bentonite. I like, I think I had kelp and vitamin C at that time. But it was just my weekly ritual before a week of auditions to take care of myself and just give my. Myself the best chance to win for. For auditions. And that was awesome. I had a great career. And then 2011 kind of got put on pause, you know, and that's where.
I want you to go into here, you guys. You see already this amazing spirit that was already expressing at a very young age. This sort of inner knowing, this inner fire, this inner intuition. So you can see that it was part of who Andy was well before sort of trauma landed in your life. And I really, really want folks here. Like, all of these things he shared so far led up to a very pivotal moment. And Andy, this story. You had the entire audience on the edge of their seat and in tears. Walk us through what happened in the spring of 2011.
Yeah, just after dinner, crossing Melrose and Sierra Bonita, looking down on my phone, I got hit by a westbound heading. Land Rover, lost consciousness, hitting the eastbound lane and run over by a tundra. Closed, cut off me in the middle of the street. Woke up at Cedars Sinai ICU with the compound fracture of my jaw. I was on a morphine drip, just coming in and out, trying to figure out what's going on. And just, you know, nurse comes in, goes, no, no, because I was just like kind of. I think I was, you know, murmuring and Kind of talking or whatever. And they just told me, no, no, because they didn't want the particles to move around because quickly found out the severity of the situation. Seven broken ribs, collapsed lung, unrecognizable. But I mean, like I said in the beginning of the phone call is interesting. When my parents came down, it was just like. Because people don't survive those accidents, you know, it was just like, wow. Yeah. I mean, yeah, you look, you're hurt, you bank up, you're alive. Like that. It was like an exhale of a different level and that continued. It's just the truth. Like, I'm very grateful that I, number one, I'd love, had a marine who was one of my nurses. Had some friendly nurses too, that, you know, you need positivity in that situation. And so, you know, leaving there, the Marines. Okay. Any day you can walk out of the hospital, it's a pretty good day, right? Good luck on your recovery. And I went, I was just like, yeah, that's, it's, that's a good point. I'm not in a wheelchair and like my ankles and shoulders and elbows are intact. I can go on walks. Yeah, let's go on walks after the sunset. So I don't bake in the scar. Okay. So I started going on walks. I had that pre existing clay mask that I would do every Sunday night. All right, Jaws wired. Chuck, let's go meet with Sage and Truth and try to get some, some nutrient density internally through a straw, through a tonic. Okay. Okay. So I started experimenting with some of the ingredients. I mean, sitting down at Air1 Tonic Bar, learning about gynostemma ashwagandha, different complexities of, you know, building the immune system back with medicinal mushrooms, reishi, chaga, hoshu, wu schizandra, all these beautiful time tested ancient herbs that I just, I was excited to try. And you know, it was a little intense for the system the first time. I, I'll spare you the visual, but I. My system rejected it. But, you know, too much of a good thing. Yeah. But I. And then, because I think I, I think about, I boiled down beets and I like put beets in the smoothie and so it was warm and anyway, I was trying to get really, really dense with it, but I, I got nutrition through that. Egg yolks, colostrum, beef liver. I mean, I was trying everything to be built my system back there a little strong the back of my mouth. And I did. I mean, within about a month. I mean, I was staying religious with this clay based Facial treatment mask is what I would call it. But I was experimenting with, with ingredients for my smoothie. Don't get me wrong, a lot of things didn't work and this was never intended to be a business product. I was just excited with the, with the hope of tomorrow morning I wake up and maybe a mitigate, you know, a little mitigation of smelling or maybe an abrasion being cleared out. Obviously the scarring right there wasn't good, but it was just as a competitor I was just excited because I did start to see results. And when you jaws out to here, when people look you in the eyes and they look at, they're trying not to make you feel uncomfortable by looking down at your jaw and your front three teeth are gone. So when you have to smile and you don't want to show people that you don't have the front three teeth like I went, I experienced all of that and I'm glad I did because I have true accounts of what it feels like to be down and out, insecure, uncomfortable, wanting to hide. So it's important that we have, in my opinion that we're, that we're relatable to. You'll be able to give true accounts of you experience. It's about human connection circuit being able to provide feedback. So someone in a similar situation, in adversity and you know you need that. I mean, and I like truly deeply want to be there for other people in a different capacity outside of skincare but in recovery, you know what I mean? And just being here, I could keep going and going and this, this is.
Like your passion is so palatable. Like this is everyone in that room. The energy was buzzing in the room when he was up there on the stage. And one of the things you really drove home was the like to the reality of our current skin care system out there. Tell us a few of the highlights of what people should be aware of, of what they're actually putting on their skin. You gave such a beautiful overview of this amazing organ of absorption elimination and what we tend to poison it with or suffocate it with on a regular basis. Can you highlight some of the ones that really trouble you that you're aware of out there that we should also be aware of?
Absolutely. I mean there's a study that on average women leave the house with over 160 government recognized carcinogens through an average of 12 products. Now when you're thinking makeup, lipstick, hairspray, maybe perfume, a little, I mean, but the tough part that really crushes me Is a lot of people think they're just, they're doing the right thing. They want to make themselves feel good before they leave the door. I get it. I do the same thing. But I really strongly believe over time, toxic buildup is realized. Someone very close to me got blood work done. And this is like products that they were heavily marketed, just, just doing their thing, going through their routine, putting on their makeup, looking beautiful to the world. But that the toxic buildup, the parabens, phthalates, the unnecessary fragrances and fillers in additives located in something that is just hidden. And you know, I just remember hearing it 10, 15 years ago. It doesn't matter. Come on. It doesn't matter. It doesn't matter. Organic food versus non organic being being called out from your friends and loved ones, it doesn't matter. It does. Those pesticides become a part of the fruit or plant and then you consume it. It becomes a part of you within seconds. Something you're doing daily, that is something we have to examine. What's inside of that? No, no, no, no. Let's. Let's look at that. Water, cereal, alcohol, butylene glycol, potassium sorbate, phenoxy, ethanol, sodium benzoate. I love the east Circle, that fragrance. Blue one, yellow five, yellow six. Why? No, no, no. Why? The unorganic. Okay, all natural, but go. This is my competitive opinion, but go above and beyond. Go organic. Shout that from the mountaintops. Let your customers know that, that you're paying a little bit more for them because you care about what they rub on top of their largest organ every day so your loved one doesn't have to have that toxic buildup on their blood work at the end of the day. So I just. And then I just, just getting you at the end of the, the. My. My speech that was so much fun to come over and like, it's just, it's very validating to have someone like yourself really, who has built their career of pursuing their why, which I love that you said it just allows me to go. Yeah, yeah, I am too. And kind of gives me confidence to keep shouting from the mountaintops. That man, look, we can get every element, every aroma, every thickener, just melt down. Beeswax, cacao butter, mango butter. Get creative with it and then explain it to other people about the lengths that you went to to find just nutrient dense purity and then tell the story of that. And then sometimes what's important to me is traveling, finding beautiful medicine. Time tested ancestral remedies. Greece, Italy, Peru, Egypt, they have them it's not, you know, just sweet almond oil and wheat germ. No, no, no. It's contuda plow. It's a myrrh lotus frankincense nastic. It's, it's just, it's my. Yeah, I'm right where I'm supposed to be. But. And that's the beautiful things. There's a lot of, you know, you know, medicinal extracts and botanicals that we can continue to incorporate in our products. And we will, but just with, you know, just take a little bit more time creating your art. Then explain why without the, just the layups, the easy, the already the microwaved assets, that, yeah, sure, they're good. Emulsifier, sure. But what is it though? It just screams plastic to me, you know, you know, just micro microwaves, the synthetics. There's no way. Where's the artistry behind just explaining what you did to melt down three different kinds of honey, you know, propolis beeswax honey, you know, just to get that emulsion. And then you can get emulsions naturally, you can get fragrances naturally, you can get surfactants naturally. And that's my. I'm shouting that from the mountaintops till the cows come home. Because it's what, it's just what I believe in. And it makes me feel better too, knowing that like I'm not rubbing anything toxic into my largest organ daily. And we can, you know, control that with our formulations as well. And so it's just, it's a lot of fun to me. I feel, I feel like I got very lucky and that's all. I'm treating this in pure gratitude and just, just being, getting the opportunity to share what we're about, I'm sure you would agree, is just, that's just the gift and just here's my offering. You know what I mean? It's just fun.
It's a huge. Because you're helping create awareness for folks. Because, you know, I teach all the time. The colleagues I've trained teach all the time. More and more people are becoming aware of this, that we do need to be mindful of those day to day assaults that we're exposed to. And we need to be mindful of everything we put in on and around us. And a lot of folks are really maybe thoughtful about their diet or maybe thoughtful about avoiding like really known toxins. Maybe they're careful about filtering their water. But then you go and you look in there, there's their medicine cabinet, or you look in their makeup bag, or you look at their Body care line and you realize, oh, this is a really. It's like a no man's land. And so you took something from just an interest of curiosity and a self kind of improvement for yourself. And then you started kind of playing, developing things after, you know, because you applied to yourself. And then a big, a big trauma. You'd be like, well, now I'm really going to try out Bob all these things on myself. When did you make that foray of I'm just experimenting on myself in my kitchen to when did you first say there actually is something of a business here that does. Because I hope you're hearing that Andy is not just someone who's just a curious by nature, but you're an alchemist. You really are. And you.
Thank you.
Other. The other thing I see is you are a curator of ancient wisdom and you're keeping it alive and where it's otherwise buried or unknown, and you're bringing it forward in a new reimagined way. So walk us through where that is for you now. Like how did you move from that place of being curious to curator and from being, you know, the, the alchemist to the, the, the. The. The protector of our ancient wisdom? How did that happen?
Oh, well, it was Christina Rodriguez taking a true double take, who had seen me fresh out of the ICU when I picked her up from the airport a few weeks later after, you know, 21 intense days of good self care with my, my clay mask and paste that's now my night cream. Like that I was melting down beeswax. She buck cacao butter, manuka honey. But it was just these little elements in the cheat, like jaw drop. Wait, what are you doing? I went, you know, obviously it feels good. And I just went, well, I mean, I'm using this clay mask and I want to try, you know, she lived a couple blocks away and so that was my first little test because I was kind of hiding at the time. And I went over their bamboo bowl, Bragg's apple cider vinegar, a little lavender oil and just. And she had a couple friends with her. It was a little embarrassing, you know, a little wordy on the description of what and why. But at the end of that I got feedback. It was a little earthy on the kale powder. I never had an intention to sell this, but I did want to share it and like have people experience. It was just this mad magic mask. Even before the accident. Like I knew what it did to me. Like I knew what I was getting Monday morning. I mean, just revitalization of my skin. You know, the capillaries that are usually stagnant, creating that microcirculation underneath the eye area just makes you look a little bit more awake and better. I just look forward to doing it. And that stayed through, not necessarily through the week, but through Tuesday. Sometimes I just look forward to doing it. And so, so I had that in my back pocket. But it really was accelerating the healing of my skin. So for about, I don't know, that year, you know, a few months into it you would have friends because I was driving all around la just, just it was like this little talked about mask. I was back in the entertainment industry. I was bartending at night. This was just like the thing that got me back in the entertainment industry. It was never supposed to be business and I would take pictures and post them on social media. But here's the big thing is I really recovered. A big part of my recovery was starting Bulletproof coffee for the first time. I mean truly electrifying me out of bed, getting me in that gym. So I wanted to. My friend was an ambassador for Bulletproof. His name's Crosby. And so I just, I troubleshooted Dave Asprey's email address. D.asprey David. It was info at Bulletproof Exec was a contact form Dave's day of Asprey. One of those went through. I did do like 10 different combinations, copy paste the same email. Like one picture. Mean I see one of like me and Mental health magazine going, dude, you got me back. It's, you know, it's people like yourself that have the attention to detail with ingredients that really resonates with me. Well, anyway, one of those got through and they just brought me out borders in a bastard. So I would like take pictures with the mask on and Bulletproof. And that was it. I was back and nothing really was supposed to happen after that, but that is, EA invited me onto Bulletproof Radio February 1, 2014 to basically share my story and how I recovered with Bulletproof products. And the last 15 minutes he asked what I did for my skin. And we didn't, we didn't talk about anything beforehand and I just went, you know, luckily I didn't overthink it because, you know, it's a large audience. But I was a little hesitant. You know, it was kind of my thing, but I didn't, you know, if I was ready to share it. And we hadn't talked about it beforehand, but I started flowing on the ingredients and why I used what I used. And he got, I think I Gave out my personal email address. And he got such a response. So did I. He flew down to LA and we came to terms on an agreement. Had a product in his store June 26th of that year. And then it was just on purpose. Electric. I mean hasn't stopped. Just. I can't even describe the feeling. I mean I idolized Dave Asprey. I mean I was one of those guys. I would just like, like, you know, just try to get a comment back. Hey, love what you're doing. And then to be working with them, it was a trip. We had a responsibility. Just maintain, get the orders out as soon as they come in. Take the profit from the clay mask, make our liquid product with the same attention to detail. It was just the coolest thing to be like to be getting the love that you wanted originally that you were kind of, you know, the smaller, you know, estheticians, makeup artists, they, you know. Thank you. I love your story. Glad you're okay. But it, it's okay. We're going to pass. And then to get it's validation, you know and just I knew I had something and people loved the mask. I mean I was so green in the, in the tech world. Like I remember sending my first marketing email on my birthday. Like literally learning mailchimp and. And then so that was interesting. And then just, just taking in such abandoned card emails, reaching out manually. Hey. And noticed you did. It was just a true learning on the on the go experience that I just such a thrill 11 years later. Like it hasn't left now that I'm sober. I just, I don't miss days and it's just. I'm very grateful.
That's another huge piece of your journey. You went from all this stuff that you were putting so much attention on your physical with the out with the skin and of course the nutrition. What. What led you to moving into sobriety? Because that's the next. Like when you made that announcement on the stage or this is a relatively newer in the last few years endeavor for you. It felt very emotional. Like it felt like it was another big mountain that you crested. Can you tell us about that journey?
Oh, absolutely. That man, that was like a physical dependence just that that I never thought I would get to. And it's these mountains that leather couch and flute music on YouTube for until I, you know I had to sit with the. I'm very grateful that I got here to Sedona. Unfortunately treatment it wasn't that effective for me. Sedona was. I cannot explain it but it's the beauty of just sit, sitting with it, getting back into the gym, giving grace to yourself. A lot of prayer, a lot of just forgiving. But it took a while. It took a while. I. Sedona made it happen. And this is an opportunity for me to. To just. I have an opportunity to live something that was an idea and I had purpose that helps other people feel better about themselves. So, like, sure, there were reasons that I was, you know, there, you know, resentment, betrayals, things like that. So. Right. I've even forgiven that part. Moving forward in this, like, headspace is. It's. It's. It's beautiful. And I'm. I'm. I'm glad you. You felt that because it is emotional. I. I didn't. I didn't. Yeah, it was extremely difficult. Extremely difficult. And I, you know, was worrying a lot of loved ones in my life, and now I don't have to. Mom and dad, they don't have to worry about me anymore. It's. It's a trip. And I'm very grateful. Appreciate you asking.
Well, and even that. Well, I love that because that's also a great. That. It's like, as you seem to have alchemized your life and into alchemizing a profession, you also realize that in getting to a certain level, there were other, you know, obstacles to overcome, and that seems to be another one. And now you're also the voice. You have such a massive following. So many people are curious. I mean, first of all, you're beautiful to look at, Andy. No one will ever argue that. Thank you. I. What I hope people know is you are even more beautiful of who you are and how you come across. And so I think people are interested in, like, what is he doing? Because people see the light you shine, and it gets brighter and brighter and brighter. And I think it's really lovely to see that. And it's literally skin deep and below and beyond, like, you just emanate it in all ways. One of the things that really struck me that I didn't know about you when we met this summer is you gave a beautiful shout out about when you realized who I was, when we both were realizing who each other was, that you've even facilitated or guided or supported your own mother on her own cancer journey. Can you speak about how all the things you've learned for your own life and healing and your own sobriety and all these pieces sort of came into this space of bigger healing and metabolic health and all the pieces that are now even supporting your mother through a health Challenge.
Oh, absolutely. That. And just be having been such as delicate of a situation as it is when you get that phone call on that. I was, I had to go straight to the gym. I was doing lat pull downs and tears. I found out my mother had breast cancer in 2018. And then so just you have to respect the situation and their emotions, number one. I mean, and then you go to the meetings and with the oncologist, which I'll never forget and just alternatives. Right. And just being aware of the studies and just, and then having mom, you know, mom's hearing one thing from the oncologist and then her pesky son about schizandra turmeric, black pepper extract, aloe vera, bone broth. You know, here we go over the. But just being tastefully, you know, there for her emotionally and I, you know, you see such a big transformation when you go through chemotherapy. And it just, in my situation there, I just had to respect her wishes and her as she did go the chemo route and then it was, you know, thank God she got out of that and her beautiful hair grew back and we're getting her vibrant that I call her cosmic mama because she's just the coolest to me and she is all in on just, you know, the health and wellness thing. There's nothing more important to me than seeing, you know, my mom and dad fire down their stem regen and do their smoothies in the morning. An effort to build every cell of their body and having them go, oh, let me. What's this? Let me try that. A little extract something. I know. You know, Naysha, it is just we have a wealth of knowledge of what we believe works. And I just, just having them more open to the. I mean, because it doesn't stop. It's a full time job all day long. It's either enhancing you or, you know, limiting you. And I just, there's nothing cooler to me to have my parents on board incrementally with the, you know, the beautiful medicine that we can put in to heal and just condition our vital material.
That's teacher with you. I mean watching your healing process, you must be a little bit of a catalyst for people when they look, you know, look around, you're, you're proof in the pudding. You know, I think that's just really, really incredible. Please tell everybody before we move around, like what is the name of your product company and what does that name mean? I thought this was a really compelling part of the story.
Yes, Aloe tura, which is Latin for feeding and Nourishing your skin being your largest organ, you want to treat it like another mouth with just clean, nutrient dense, ideally food grade ingredients. But it was going to be golden glow, all one word, both cheese capitalized no W. So glad we didn't go that route. So but yeah, Alura is. Oh man. Yeah. And then just the signature is me signing off on the ingredients. So yeah, it's every.
Packaging it buy me like this man is involved. It's like soup to nuts. Andy is your person. His energy is being infused in every step of the way of the formulation to the the actual. Because now you have a lab now you've got your production, your manufacturing close by. So now you can have your hand in that and even down to the packaging and the mailing. I love when you were sharing that. I like this man is infusing his mojo into every aspect of this which is really beautiful.
You have to. You should imagine though it's. It's daily. Hey guys. These little things matter. And just getting them on board, it's. Dude, it takes five seconds. Just get a thank you so much. Handwritten. The handwritten element do. Everybody loves it and that's what we did up until we. We got a fulfillment center and it just. We lost that personal touch that I love. And so when you get the other guys, your team on board and that's where we're at. I know it's tedious but don't. Dude, those things matter and just because this is an opportunity, the fact that you are taking it and then you come back in order, I just. It's all right there. They're all human beings. Like thank you. Just. Just connection.
Your connection. Yeah, I love. Yeah, I love it. I love it. Andy, we are in. First of all, by the time everyone listens to this, you and I are having this discussion about skin. Skin health. All the crap we put on our skin that is very contributing to less health and vitality and finding people who are the alchemist to bring us things that still create health but also beauty and self confidence. You really bring all of that together. But we're having the conversation the midst of November which is skin health awareness month which help. Perfect. Are we having this? We're going to probably have this go live in December, but it's also coming out at the time of the holidays and people are always trying to look for better gift ideas. Better ideas. Because you know, I mean I hate to throw out a name but it's like unfortunately people, well meaning giving gifts of things like bed bath and beyond. I already know that that is one giant chemical toxic soup. And I cannot in good conscience put that on my body or even give it away. It makes me so sad because it's not a diss to the company, it's just a dis. Two people not understanding. You actually have something that is the gift that is of health and of beauty and of self confidence. Like what would you like what would be your favorite? Like three of your products that you think would be a great starter for people to get a sense of you, your alchemy, your company and maybe an exploration of their own skin health and vitality.
So that the clay mask, in my opinion is the most effective single use product on the market. Like if you apply that, just let it dry, Add some of your favorite essential oils, just let it dry. Hop in the shower, rinse, cold rinse, close the pores, hop out, look at yourself, look in the mirror. Send me an email how you feel like. It is something I look forward to one to three times a week. That clay mask just. It opens up pathways, releases a lot of that congestion that we hold in that T zone right there. So it like opens you up. It's. It's like you feel more awake. Regard. Aside from the microcirculation generated to the surface of the skin, the brightening light exfoliation and just complete cleanse of dirt and oil and heavy metal, you know, removal too from the clays, it just. Yeah, that's a treatment.
Air pollution out of your skin. It's crazy. Yeah.
Yeah.
So I knew this when I was using it this summer after I met you, I was on, you know, an airplane every week for many weeks. This was how I got through with my skin program, was with that mask because it was so helpful. And then my husband's very sensitive to smells and fragrance. So no body care. Like I usually can't even use body care products because it's so effective, you know, affects him. When I use your really heavy, thick nighttime cream, my husband wants to actually eat my face. And so I think that's a real test.
Yes.
No, that's really beautiful. So that would be my second pick. Tell us about that beautiful nighttime skin care.
It just originally made out of the cast iron pan. You know, I had the original one too. Up to. Up to 20, 21. I lost it in the move from here to that because I was using that. It was still good little chunks of manukani. It was orange with the Seaba thorn and beeswax. But it was. That's what we got professionally made into what is now the night cream. But it was my paint, was my nutrient dense paste that I would just apply following the, you know, the stone age claim as this is way back in the day. But that's how it started. It has no water in the formula. 10% vegan hyaluronic acid, two different plant derived stem cells. Colostrum CoQ10. Just a really rich. I don't as a little, you know, a little dewy residue in the morning because it's thicker. A little goes a long way. I don't mind it either. I mean how many night creams and eye creams just go on dissolve and you're like it just doesn't. You know, I mean you're hoping on the active ingredient doing its work. But I just never like the overly drying component and I've been wearing night and night creams for quite a while. But yeah, so I would rather be over the top in hydration. When you're in one position for hours, that night cream doesn't get returned. I mean that's. Yeah, it's our number two product. Our number one product. How do you like the gold sphere? What do you think about that?
Well, my gold serum I had for one week. I was like this stuff is the best ever. And then I dropped the bottle and broke it.
Oh, we got to get.
I've not let play sense. I need to come back to it, my friend. I will be my first one to order to order back.
Yeah, we'll. We'll send one to you. That is just. It was an idea. I remember 2017. Like it was just theory but and this wasn't a marketing approach. I was like well let's add some clean actives to this organic base of botanicals. Copper peptide, plant derived vitamin A which is a potent retinol alternative. Marie College and Coq 10 astaxanthin ingredients that I supplement with right internally in a base of no water, rose oil, frankincense, sandalwood. You know, just it's it and it has like a light little unintentional glow that we had to dial down. But from the house of xanthan and the coquitin. So we're not adding the yellow five, yellow six to get that gold color.
That just bring on a little like sun bronzer like kind of vibe. It's really lovely.
It is, thank you. Yeah. That's a special product that literally it's interesting nature. I don't know if you look at some of your work from the past, you go that I wouldn't Change. You ever do that? Like that? I got that one. Like, I wouldn't change a thing. Even though we learn more later on in life and go, oh, yeah, they're going on right then and there. Like, I. I just. Yeah, it's just. Yeah. I mean, because it gets. You know, that was seven years ago and I can't change a decimal point. I'm just. I just love formulating. There's a lot of information out there. It was kind of. Well, I don't even think he'd ever seen the combination. You know, it's very rare that you see, you know, cutting edge, clean skin science, active ingredients with organic botanicals. Now you're starting to see it a little bit more. But anyway, just little chances, you know, that you take that step towards. I mean, that's what leads to innovation. I just firmly believe that. Oh, there's so much more to if. When we get into hair care and. But now we're wrapping up our sunscreen, that.
This was the one I was hoping. Is it ready yet?
First sample next week. And the thing is, like, pushing boundaries with the formulations, getting my beautiful chemist to go, let me just. Let's reverse engineer this proprietary blend. Let's take out that xanthan gum, citric acid. We can make our own multani, meaty little L. Ascorbic acid. Just. There's the D. It's. It's your ability. It's your opportunity to make your album of work. You know what I mean? You don't see you two Coldplay. They don't just rush it out like. No, this is their life's work. It's a passion, you know, so that. Yeah, that's.
I love it. Andy. Like anybody who's ever come in contact with you, they must get like an Andy contact high. But my hope that we'll get a sense of just your spirit, your integrity, your passion. This literally wishes something that started out and then other people started demanding it from you. It wasn't your intention. Like, I'm gonna go out and make an empire of this. It was so organic and how it's flowed. And I'm so glad for all of the abundance that it's bringing into everyone's lives that it touches in, you know, in all ways. How can people find. Find you? How can they learn more about you? How can they get on the wait list for this, you know, sunscreen, for instance, which is always the bane of my existence to have these conversations. And how can they follow you and see all the beautiful, beautifulness of Your spirit being shown out there in the social media world.
Well, thank you very much. That's a very sweet thing to say, Dr. Nation and I. I'm on Instagram, Andy Nilo H N I L o Alatura naturals on Instagram and I'm in the messages. If you have any questions, please reach out. I love this stuff. And then also, I just want to give a shout out to you, Dr. Naysha. You are a big hero to so many people and you are just getting started. It feels like you've done so much over. I believe it's 35 years, but 30, 33, sacred number. I just. It's an honor to be connected with you. I'm glad we crossed paths. What you're doing is powerful and I see you keep going. That's awesome.
Thank you, Andy. You are an absolute delight and I can't wait for our path to cross. And I cannot wait to get my next order in. Now that I'm in one place for the first time in five months, I am so excited to replenish my thoughts. I was telling him right before we started videoing, I'm out of everything. I need to place my order. So, you guys, I am not someone who goes out there and endorses many things, right? And when I do, it's because I'm personally using them and having an extreme experience from them. People are always asking me about my skincare or my routine, especially when I've been on the road as much as I've been and it shows. And what I experienced for a couple months on your product, which I only had access to for about two and a half months. I can't even believe. I think my skin would be absolutely disastrous after five months in airports and, you know, faraway places on the planet and hotels and poor, like, lifestyle bat patterns you got, you saved me, so I'm really grateful for that. And Andy, I wish you your company all the best and we look forward to sharing how to reach you with everybody.
Hey, thank you so much for having me on.
