Things Are Getting Real Spooky In The Business World | Biz To Biz Podcast
4 Dec 2024 · 29 min
In this informal, conversational episode of the Biz to Biz podcast, hosts Allen Kopelman and Justin bounce between personal anecdotes and a rapid‑fire rundown of current business‑related news. They start with light‑hearted banter about the NFL snow game and Thanksgiving meals, then shift to concerns about phone privacy, discussing RCS, encrypted messaging, and alleged government surveillance via microphones and smart‑home devices. The conversation moves to logistics innovations, noting the FAA’s approval of Amazon’s drone delivery program and the rise (and theft) of autonomous food‑delivery robots. They critique the failure of Jay‑Z’s cannabis brand Monogram, explore the challenges of the broader cannabis market, and mention DEI rollbacks at major firms. The hosts then dive into political commentary, questioning the qualifications of recent presidential appointees, the role of unelected bureaucrats, and the partisan dynamics of Senate confirmations. Throughout, the tone remains casual, opinionated, and occasionally skeptical, weaving personal stories with commentary on technology, regulation, and corporate culture.

You are now watching the Biz to Biz podcast with Allen and Justin.
Yo, what's up everybody? It's Justin live from B2B Vault, the Biz to Biz podcast sponsored by Nationwide Payment Systems, hosted by this guy, the Martin Scorsese of payment processing himself, Allen Kopelman. What's up, sir?
Not a lot.
You lost the bet. You owe me 20 push-ups in a row.
We'll try.
I won't make you do 20, dude. I told my dad about it and he was like, man, you know, mess around, have a heart attack, dude. Do not let him do that. And I said, yeah, no, I wasn't going to let him do the 20. But yeah, I knew they were going to get smoked. Anyway, they were frozen.
It was a horrible game.
You guys look like— you look like Vandy Camp's frozen TV, the TV.
Let me tell you, the San Francisco Bills game, that was a good, exciting snow game. San Francisco is from—
don't try to switch the— no, I'm just saying San Francisco, that game, y'all got your asses whooped.
Yes, we did.
There you had no running game. Your coach doesn't stink, your team stinks.
Okay, well, the whole thing stinks. I don't know, I don't know. They can't fix—
Tyreek Hill has bricks for hands when it's cold.
Listen, we haven't been good since 1970s, except for the Marino times.
You guys did knock the shit out of one of our wide receivers though. I thought he was like about to die. Yeah, JJ, uh, what was his name? Watson. Yeah, he was having like a seizure on the field.
That's not good.
You didn't even watch the game.
I did watch. I remember that.
Okay.
Yeah, but it wasn't good. It was ugly for the Dolphins.
Yeah, our defense looks really good.
And it was, and it was on late, so it was like horrible to watch, staying up, you know.
So yeah, if you're not just watching, you're on the losing side of the ball. Yeah, it's horrible to watch.
Exactly.
Late, these sucks. You got your ass.
Yeah, you ate all your Thanksgiving, now you're fat.
Tired and depressed because your team lost.
That's the Dolphins. I'm a homer, so I cheer for the Dolphins. They've been my team since I'm a kid.
Yeah, no, you know, and yeah, that was an interesting day of football though. I didn't— that was a lot of football, I feel like. And for— but I don't—
the other games were exciting.
I didn't watch the other two games. I was cooking.
They were They were competitive. I was cooking and eating.
Yeah. Lots of eating, man. Lots of eating. How did your Thanksgiving feast turn out?
Everybody was happy. Nice. Nice. Yeah, our—
I forgot to take pictures of the salmon, but it was gone so damn fast. Like it didn't even end up on anybody's plates. It just stayed on the— in the aluminum foil. But yeah, the turkey came out perfect. Salmon. I made some steaks. Some greens.
I made some pot roast. I made roasted turkey. My dad made this like corn chowder type thing. Like a cream corn. Right.
It was really interesting. Very different.
I made Jacob his favorite, mac and cheese. That's his big thing. Oh, we got to make the mac and cheese.
So we forgot mac and cheese, right? We forgot the ingredients. So my daughter was like, I'm not eating. So I looked on the shelf and I was like, all right, I got 2 packs of Velveeta macaroni, right?
Already.
So I, you know, I just whipped it up, you know what I mean? A little bit of cream, added some more cheese. Put it all together, put it in the oven for a little while. To say the least, to say the least, it's gone.
Oh, okay.
So it must have turned out okay, you know. But yeah, everything was good, everything was good. Wish we had like 5 more days off of work though.
We got another stretch coming up. Yeah.
I just need a vacay, man. I both times I was out of the office this year, it was for being sick. So that's not, that's not fun.
No.
You know what I mean? That's not relaxing and decompressing. That's healing and recovering. I need some R&R in a bottle of tequila.
Okay. So here's a weird story. Yeah, so screw— I see, like, ever since I updated my iPhone, I noticed that when I'm sending messages to people, not every message but some messages, it says RCS.
That's because they have Android.
No, so I looked it up online. I know, I'm gonna explain to you.
You don't need to explain to me.
It's the rich communication service, and Apple and Google have installed this to get people to stop using WhatsApp. Oh, because it's encrypted, the RCS. Okay, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. So then today I see an article come out in Forbes magazine talking about—
because now you can give your Android friend a thumbs up and they actually see Well, yeah, that too.
It's able to send high-res pictures, files. You can see when somebody's typing. Doesn't matter which phone they're on.
Yeah.
Right? You can see that they read the message. Yeah. It was delivered and all that. So Forbes magazine today has an article come out. And in the article, it says that the FBI and the CISA, the US Cyber Defense Agency, are warning Americans that they should only use fully encrypted messaging and phone calls when they can. The backdrop is that Chinese hacking of US networks is ongoing and likely to scale more than previously understood. Fully encrypted comms is the best defense against this compromise. Americans are being urged to use this. Now here's the weird thing. We talked about on the podcast about fully encrypted network, uh, Telegram, right? So, and what, they arrested the guy, they want to read everybody's messages. So is any— I don't, I don't believe any of this. Anything you do on your phone is safe. I mean, you mentioned some meat dish to me the other day, and all of a sudden it's in your Facebook.
Yeah, I didn't Google anything when I was on my phone, right? Like that was related to that.
Right.
I did Google weird foods in Wisconsin. Right. But not cannibal sandwich. So, yeah. So to say, you know, like to say that they're not listening to our conversations would be naive and kind of stupid.
That's weird that the phone—
they just— I mean, I don't know. There's this podcast, this guy, I can't— I forgot his name. I, you know, I love— which I watch a lot of podcasts. Well, not a lot, there's a couple, but there's this one guy, he's like ex, uh, CIA, military.
Okay.
And he does like, uh, he started off like as an everyday carry guy, like he, you know, like you pull out your bag and whatever you got. Yeah, you know those videos, right? That's how he started his— but now he's, you know, whatever. But he interviews a lot of people that are in, you know, different alphabet forces in the United States of America. And, um, he said the only way for you to— that, you know, like, for you to turn this off completely is if you take the battery out. And on new phones, right? Yeah, there is no battery, right?
It's inside.
So even when you turn it off Right. They have the capability of still accessing your microphone. Well, that's terrible.
Yeah, well, we talked about that when I told you that those people were spying on that, like they— I was watching this rate, this reel, right?
Yeah.
So on this reel, there's this radio station, Mojo in the Morning or something, one of these guys, or Jubal, and they do those prank calls. And this woman was on there and she's like, I know I caught my husband cheating because I think it was Mojo. They called her— she caught her husband cheating because she was able to activate through her phone the Alexa in her house.
Yeah, I've seen that. And then I've seen that.
And then she can hear what's going on in the house. That shit's insane, dude. That's crazy.
Yeah.
I mean, I like—
that's cool. Like, in a sense of security, being able to, like, listen what's going on in your house, right? But also it's like, damn, well, who else can access that? Exactly. That's what I was going to say. Like, damn, like, who else is listening?
Right.
You know what I mean? Like, I mean, yeah, I know you see the CEO of UnitedHealthcare got whacked in Midtown Manhattan. Yeah, it's crazy.
Yeah.
Like, that wasn't a robbery or random shit. Dude got his noodles pushed back down Midtown Manhattan.
Yeah, just crazy. Yeah, just like random. Boom.
All right, Randall.
No, no, but I'm just saying, like, no, no motive. I don't even know if there's witnesses. I mean, they got a million cameras.
It's Midtown Manhattan, right?
There's a million cameras, bro.
There's a million people on the street.
They didn't catch the person.
That's why there's a million people on the street, you know. You can't— that's that. I don't know. I wonder what's— it's crazy because there's so many CEOs, right? Like, in high-level You know, founders, CEOs, just, just, you know, well, yeah, that one guy retiring, they're being killed. Well, they're just one dude with the boat, like, they're all like quitting their jobs. They're like, fuck that, I don't want nothing to do with none of this.
Remember that one dude, he had that yacht or something, and then he got killed, right, with that yacht, weird yacht accident. And then that guy in San Francisco who was related into Cash App and he got killed on the street.
Yeah, I mean, I'm just saying in general in the past 2 months though, like there's been like 15, 20 CEOs that stepped down, right, from their position, like totally, like they're gone, you know. And then not to mention all these other guys, right, plus this guy just got whacked. And then today, also mafia style, also today there was a crazy article.
I was listening to these guys who like talk about what's on the news on LinkedIn, doing a, uh, like audio event in the mornings. And one of the things they were talking about was a big— there was a big LinkedIn news article about all these different companies and how people are stepping down from their position. And then also like these deep— their eliminating all this DEI stuff at their company. Like, they're eliminating it. And it was like a whole big article about a bunch of major companies, like, that flipped on that, the whole DEI thing.
Well, I'm just saying, it was just very strange.
I think it's messed up.
So that whole thing, I think, definitely needs to be Well, there's to be different, but I don't want to— well, we're not gonna— we're not to discuss that.
Yeah, just authorized, uh, I mean, uh, FAA gave Amazon the green light for their drone delivery system yesterday.
That's crazy.
So you're going to be seeing drones drop packages off into your select cities right now, right? Um, I'm sure it's probably going to be heavy on the West Coast. I'm assuming. I don't know.
Probably more like in the suburbs where maybe it's harder for them in the West Coast around.
Yeah, yeah. You know, in the hills and stuff like that. Rich people neighborhoods. I'm thinking they're not going to be doing that shit in the hood. I'm just saying, it's like, first of all, they're going to try to steal the drone and the package because it's like an announcement. Like, you know, it's like a helicopter when they're chasing somebody. Like, bro, what?
I mean, I saw—
I thought they're gonna have to have some sort of like, I don't know, drop location or some shit.
I don't—
that ain't gonna work. It's not in the impoverished neighborhoods. That's literally announcing that, hey yo, Allen's getting the package, come and take this shit, you got 2 minutes.
I mean, they're not gonna drop off a big screen TV like that. How do you know?
How do you—
I don't know.
It don't matter what size it is.
Did you see that other thing that they have that Domino's has that robot with the food, and also Chick-fil-A has one now. They have those things running down the street. People are smacking those things off the ground, stealing all the food.
Yeah.
Right. I mean, Domino's has that whole car that drives up to your house.
They don't go up to the house.
It doesn't go up to the house?
No, there's locations.
Oh, it goes, you gotta go to the corner.
Yeah.
And go get your pizza.
Hella sketch. Bro, man, I don't know, dude. That's— yeah, that— no thanks. I've seen now, like, cook your own pizza, it's fun. It really is. It's challenging. You don't have to make your own pizza dough. I'm not suggesting you do that, but go to the corner, your local Italian market. Yeah, buy you some fresh dough, right? Or they got it frozen, right? Make it. Go get yourself the ingredients, whatever you want to put on there. Pineapples and ham if you're a sick twisted individual. But, uh, yeah.
I'm not into the fruit pizza.
I don't mind like having the fruit, like a piece of pineapple on a pizza. Like I've done that like on a veggie pizza before. Just throwing a piece, if I bake them my own.
Yeah.
Just do a piece of pineapple. You know what I mean? I remember being a kid like, had a piece of pineapple and Canadian bacon, whatever it was, when Pizza Hut did it years ago.
That was the Hawaiian pizza.
Yes, the Hawaiian pizza. Yeah, and it was disgusting. I probably— that was one of the last times I— what, grand opening, grand closing type situation, right? Yeah. Speaking of the grand opening, grand closing, Jay-Z's, uh, cannabis company Monogram has hit the brick wall, you could say. They're done. They ran through a half a billion dollars.
Wow, that's crazy.
There was 6 of the largest grow houses, and it was like their whole— the whole thing was— they had no excuse, right, to take over the market, right? They had Jay-Z as the spokes guy, you know what I mean? He was Currency, another rapper, there was some other, you know, just huge in like celebrities, right, endorsing the product. One joint cost $50.
That's crazy.
Yeah. Um, so that's why it failed, because no one in the, you know, the culture of the cannabis who like connoisseurs that type of shit, no one's paying $50 for a joint, bro. That's just dumb, right? You know what I mean? Like, there's no— I mean, if you are, it's like maybe because it's like, oh yeah, you know, a tip or something. Like, but yeah, someone told me about this, uh, joint they saw.
They saw in Colorado in the place, and they make this, uh, they roll it up and then they wrap gold foil around it. They call it the 24-karat Yeah, I've seen them before.
Yeah, I don't want to smoke those.
Yeah, that's a little weird. You can eat it, but yeah, I guess there's, there's benefits for all that.
But yeah, that's sad, man. But Jay-Z, he left the company like a while ago.
That's crazy.
And now they're just pretty much belly up. They can't find none of the products in any other dispensaries on the West Coast. Yeah, I don't know.
I'll speak—
the whole cannabis industry is in trouble though, like as far as like, um, making money.
Well, you read about like these different cannabis stores and how, you know, can they turn a profit, can they not turn a profit. So like a lot of states, like, um, Michigan is one where they have specific like zip code, and then you can only have— based on the population and the zip code, they have a limit. Like, oh, you can have 2 cannabis stores in that.
That's not fair. That's a monopoly.
Well, they're making sure that those people can make money.
Just 2 people? Why don't I know that sound?
No, no, I'm not saying it's 2 people.
Just 2.
Just could be 5 if it was in—
I'm just saying I'm saying that doesn't— that would be like, then there can only be 2 liquor stores.
I get it. I'm just saying they're trying.
So that's not gonna work. That's bullshit. I call major bullshit.
I mean, here it's on every corner. Every bank that closes turns into a dispensary here, which is almost every bank, which is smart.
I went to the Cookies in North Miami and I was like, yeah, this was definitely a bank because they have like— it's just a roundabout thing and it just, it had to be a bank.
Yo, you can't move like the, where the tellers were, you can't really move that.
I mean, you could, you'd just have to remodel the entire everything.
Yeah. I mean, that stuff is—
But in a sense, that's what a dispensary is anyway.
Right.
So to leave it the way it is just makes sense.
Yeah, you could leave it like that and the teller could be the bud tender.
That's exactly what it was.
And then you can lock all your product up in the vault at night.
I'm assuming that's pretty much how it goes.
Makes sense.
Because I mean, Miami is full of crooks.
Everywhere. Listen, any business that has a lot of cash is going to be a target.
Oh, shit, man. I would love to hit a dispensary. I'm kidding. But yeah, and then the FDA authorized the study of smoked cannabis to treat PTSD in veterans to stay on the cannabis. I thought that was very good. Um, yeah, but we'll see what they do with it though, you know what I mean? Yeah, well, that's the thing. And these are the other— there's— because the other thing, these guys are traveling to Mexico. Have you heard about this?
Yeah, they go to Mexico. They also go to— like, one of my friends spends part of the year in, um, Dominican Republic, and there's a ton of U.S. vets down there. They go down there for care and everything.
Yeah, but I'm saying in Mexico specifically, they have like a psilocybin mushroom, right, therapy, and it's legal there. And all these guys come back to the United States like a— like how they were before they went to the war, you know, like they're just like, they're okay, they're fine, you know what I mean? They're ready to move forward. But, and they're seeing all these studies and still the United States is like, nah.
Well, something's got to change in the FDA and all that. I mean, you have, you know, all kinds of drugs that can help people and then it's not covered by insurance and this and that.
Can I ask you something? You're older than me.
Yes.
Oh, shit. We got a spillage in the studio. It's all good. Nothing's terrible. Um, but, uh, so I'm looking at these people that are being selected by Donald Trump.
Okay.
And then I Google them, right? 90% of them, yeah, have nothing to do with what the hell he put them in charge to do with. How in the hell are you putting some business owner in charge of the Navy, bro?
Name? Yes. I haven't looked at all the lists.
I mean, Matt Gaetz, dude, he's a— come on, bro.
I don't know. He's not gonna get to do anything.
They don't matter, bro. That's the perception that he is putting out there is terrible, dude.
I think he put Matt Gaetz at first. He put Matt Gaetz—
listen, I want you to answer the question, okay? Do you not— you do not have to be qualified in any way whatsoever You just have to be a friend or a, or a mother-in-law or a niece.
Oh, did you see the people? I don't want to get into them.
I'm asking you. I don't want to go tit for tat.
Well, we are going to go tit for—
no, because I'm just asking you a question in general. It don't matter who's president.
Most of the people they put in these positions, some of them don't have relevant experience.
Okay, that's— and that's just stupid.
And then—
and that's making America greater. Okay, don't just—
maybe you should go look at the people Biden appointed. I don't care. Same exact thing. Yeah, but you're gonna see all the same shit, right?
But I cheated. But Trump cheated. Fucking what the hell?
Did you see who Biden appointed to be the Secretary of Health for the government?
We're— that's past tense.
I understand, but I'm just saying you can't say Trump's doing something that I didn't say Trump I'm doing something.
I'm asking a question, bro.
I'm answering it.
So you don't have to have any experience and you could just become some sort of high-level leader in the United States government just because you know somebody that knows somebody, bro? I'm in the wrong profession. I need to move to DC right now, tomorrow.
Right.
And break a few legs.
Okay.
And introduce myself like, hello, I'm the informant, whatever I want to be, right? Right. And then I can go run the country. That's what it— that's the vibe it gets, bro. Like, you— but you can just put gangsters, rapists, some racists, a couple of good old boys, maybe, uh, I mean, you—
I mean, you gotta look at it.
It's just the history of the United States of America is trash, bro. Like, it's sad to watch. Like, as an adult watching this shit unfold in front of my face And trying to—
can I—
are you trying to explain that shit to a 16-year-old mixed race child that's African American? It's— shit is disgusting.
Okay, because she—
the questions that she asked me are relevant. It's very relevant.
I want to give an explanation.
And what it all boils down to is white privilege runs.
Okay, that's not the truth.
Come on, dude.
There's— that's not the truth. That's not the truth, Justin. If you look at these cabinet positions of what they appoint people for, those people are like the over— they're, they're not in charge of like the Pentagon. They are overseeing everything. So, okay, now he, he appointed Pete Hegseth. They're not going to let him get approved. He was in the military, so he does have military experience. Now they're talking about they want to put your buddy Ron DeSantis in charge. Now, Ron DeSantis was also in the military.
What branch of military and what did he do for them?
He was a JAG officer.
I bet he was.
And he also—
he was a—
yeah, he was a lawyer in the military and he fought in the— he was in the military and he fought.
He fought?
Yes, he fought in the military for his rights to party. Okay, whatever, dude. You know, they, they pick—
you need to really go look at people Bush appointed, Reagan appointed, disagreeing I am not disagreeing with you in who these other presidents put in power. What I'm trying to— I'm just, just clarifying. I'm just saying it's the same thing. You do defend this guy like you're my father. No, I swear to God, you do. You defend Donald Trump like he's your brother.
I'm not saying— I'm not saying he's not doing anything.
Get off the sausage.
They're putting the guy Kash Patel, right? And they want to put him in charge of the FBI. He has relevant experience.
In which way?
Because he was involved in the federal government.
So he gets to run the Federal Bureau of Investigation?
Who are they going to pick? Who do they pick? Someone in the FBI?
Yes, someone who is a part of the— who knows, like, to how to investigate.
I don't know, bro. He was an investigator.
Where?
For the federal government.
Investigating what?
Crime, dude. You have to go look into these people.
No, I have. I have.
You're not—
they're not No, no, no, I'm looking at the most of the people that they talk about, like, that are like the big people. They're talking about agriculture lady. She has nothing to do with anything.
She's just—
what the fuck? She just is a— she's just literally the niece of the other guy.
Listen, they put people in charge. Those people are managers, okay? They are not managers. That's what— that's essentially what they're doing. They say, oh, Justin, okay, they'll put Justin— you can be the— you could be the Listen, Obama appointed all these people. He called them czars of this and czar of that. They weren't even— those positions—
keep going back to what—
it doesn't matter. It's the same thing. I'm just—
he's doing the same thing. There's no argument there. Look, okay, bro, there's no argument there, okay? My argument is the fact that it's stupid. It's not right. It doesn't help the—
the Americans. Can I become great again? Can I explain something?
No, because it's bullshit.
I'm gonna explain something. You keep You could try. The biggest problem, if you let me talk, the biggest problem we have in Washington, D.C. is you have unelected officials that are running the government, running different departments in the government. They're bureaucrats. They were not elected. They were not, they just get hired. People appoint them to their job, and those people are making decisions that shouldn't be made by the, by them. The decisions for the American people need to be made by elected officials. Okay. And that's what needs to be done.
How is appointing these people electing?
Because you elected—
that's bullshit. You elected—
no, no. The people he has that he's appointing, they have to pass. They have to go through. They have to be approved by the House and the Senate.
And who controls the Senate right now?
It doesn't matter. Who does?
Who controls it?
The, the, the Republicans.
Okay, exactly.
But that doesn't control the House. It doesn't.
They don't control the House.
They do. But the Republicans— but they don't have a 66% majority. You got to have a two-thirds vote to approve all these people.
Exactly. They don't have two-thirds yet.
They don't have it. It's not yet. It's not going to happen.
Okay.
You just don't— I'm just telling you that this is what, what people don't understand about. There's too many, there's too many bureaucrats, in my opinion. In the government who do jobs, who make decisions, that are not elected, and they make up policies and laws.
You just, you just literally agreed to my point then.
You literally—
that's my whole point, right?
But these are people being appointed. There's unappointed people. All right, we can have a whole podcast all about— we can have a whole podcast discuss the government. Well, that's your opinion. You have your opinion and I have my opinion. My opinion is wipe everything out. I hope Elon Musk and Vivek are successful with their Doge thing and they clean out all the fat in the government of unneeded jobs. Yeah, sure thing.
Yeah, power to the people.
All right, power to the people. Peace out. Carpe diem. Come back next time, we'll have another political discourse.
