A Google AI system taught itself a Bangladeshi language overnight to answer a question it couldn't handle, then kept going and learned 1,000 languages total without being programmed to do it.
Here's something else I heard recently that was quite interesting. Apparently the AI system that Google relies on was asked a question in a language, I think it was a relatively obscure Bangladeshi language, and it couldn't answer the question. And now its goal is to answer questions, and so it went, taught itself this language, I believe in a morning, and then it could answer in that language, which is what it's supposed to do because it's supposed to answer questions. And then it learned 1,000 languages, and that wasn't something it had been, say, told to do or programmed to do— not that these systems are precisely programmed.
