An AI agent or a junior engineer: which hire makes sense? One argument: AI agents push developers up the stack into architect and product manager roles, away from writing loops and conditionals. The developer becomes an AI manager instead.

If today you want to hire AI agents and the other one is a junior engineer, which one is better?
I'm afraid I'm going to say that for me, I would be more comfortable with the agent. If you're telling the developer who's then going to use an agent, it's just like another link in the chain in the telephone game. If I tell a junior developer to work on something, then they're telling a junior developer who is actually an AI to solve it, are not going to really think in for loops. And if-then statements. They're going to be architects, product managers, managers of the AIs.
