Coding agents are here to stay in software development. Engineers still need to oversee them, but these tools bring architectural expertise that keeps AI-generated code aligned with good design. Engineering as a discipline won't disappear, even as the tools get more powerful.

The toothpaste isn't going back in the tube. All the engineers I know are using coding agents, and that's not going to change. I have to babysit my coding agents still. Like, I come in with an idea of the architecture that I want from my experiences of building things. I know what is good architecture, and then I can keep the agent on the rails. We're just kind of going through an interesting stage right now in software development. I think we're going to get through this and realize that engineering is always going to exist. We just have some better tooling now.
