This YouTube safety guide (by Anthony LaFazia) explains required pre-shift inspections for power presses, focusing on workplace housekeeping, visual inspection of the press and components, verification of safety controls (barrier guards, interlocks, light curtains, emergency stop buttons), and functional testing procedures. It emphasizes reporting malfunctions to maintenance/supervisors and never operating the press until defects are fixed.

Before using a power press, a pre shift inspection to ensure the equipment and safety devices are all working properly is required. First, look over the area around the press for any debris, tools, spills or other potential hazards that might interfere with operation. Having a clean and organized workplace is one way of significantly reducing accidents. Then you should conduct a visual inspection, checking the press, frame and components for any signs of damage, wear or deformation. All parts should be secure and in good condition. Lastly, confirm all safety controls like barrier guards, light curtains and emergency stop buttons are in place and not blocked or otherwise interfered with. If everything looks good, it's time to perform some functional tests to make sure everything's in working order. Make sure your barrier guards are positioned correctly and locked in place. If you're using an interlocked barrier guard, make sure the interlocking function shuts down the press when not in place. Test your light guards by interrupting the beam to be sure the press stop stops immediately. And test your emergency stop button to make sure it also immediately stops the press when pushed. If you notice any issues or malfunctions during your pre shift inspection, immediately notify maintenance and your supervisor of the problem. Do not operate the press until all issues have been fixed. Remember, it's both your right and your responsibility to make sure the press is safe to operate. Going through these inspections before every shift will help to maintain a safe work environment for both yourself and your coworkers.
