Antonio Matta explains how loneliness sabotages addiction recovery through three mechanisms: it heightens threat sensitivity, disrupting sleep and appetite; it warps thinking into beliefs of permanent rejection; and it creates an urgent drive for relief that triggers relapse.

Now let's get clinical for a second. Loneliness tends to do 3 things that matter in recovery. 1, it increases threat sensitivity. When you feel socially unsafe, your body behaves like you're physically unsafe. Sleep gets weird. Appetite gets weird. Motivation disappears. You don't just feel sad, you feel on edge, even if you're laying perfectly still. 2. It distorts cognition. Loneliness doesn't only say you're alone, it says you're unwanted. It says you will always be alone. That's not a feeling, It's a belief system, and belief systems drive behavior. 3, it creates urgency for relief. That urgency is where relapse lives, because substances and certain destructive coping behaviors don't just numb pain.
