A short YouTube talk by Asif Osman about the common problem of punctuality. Osman notes cultural acceptance of lateness, distinguishes fashionable lateness from disorganization or indifference, and emphasizes that forming the intention to be on time (plan earlier, allow buffer time, be organized) produces punctual habits and improves reliability and professional growth.

Hello there. My name is Asif Osman and here I am with a thought of mine. And today I want to talk about something that is very, very common problem with many people and that is to do with punctuality. We're always late and it looks like, especially in the culture that I belong to, that being late is sort of accepted as the norm. Of course there are some people who are fashionably late. They like to be purposely late because of issues on ego and other things. There are others who would like to be on time but just cannot plan themselves well enough on time.
And there are others who basically just don't care if they're late or not. I'd like to address what I'm talking about to people who would like to be on time but find themselves struggling to be on time and are frequently late.
And as a result they don't grow.
Or are stamped as someone unreliable when.
It comes to being on time. If we want to grow as a professional, be respectable and be reliable and have other people think of us as reliable, we obviously need to work on ourselves, on habits that we form. I went to a workshop recently and among other things, one of the key things that I learned from this workshop and it was this presenter's point of view, that many people are late because they never had the intention to be on time. He says that when you have the intention to be on time, and if you have an appointment at 8am which is a place which is a 5km away, and you know that normal traffic will take you half an hour to get there from, from your home, if you had the intention, you would probably wake up a bit early and leave 40 minutes earlier, allowing 10 minutes extra for traffic mishaps or something that might happen on the way that might delay you. So if you have intention of rather.
Being five minutes early than five minutes late, and if you really cared about your reputation, you would have to work on that. And I guess what he says right.
The first thing is the intention to make yourself be on time. So the next actions follow as a result of that intention. That is you make up your mind to wake up early, finish your tasks or chores early, and then leave a bit earlier than expected just to be on time. And this applies to every single thing that we do. Our days are filled with appointments, our days are filled with time bound elements. Imagine all the steps that you would take if you needed to fly somewhere and you knew the aircraft is not going to waste for you and you needed to be on time at the airport. Some people even managed to miss flights because they are not organized. So being organized is part of being punctual. So you've got to work on that. So those of you who have trouble being punctual most of the time need to work on that.
