All right, welcome to Boutique Chat. This week, you guys, I'm so excited to be here at Dallas Market center for our very first live podcast in the building. And I when we were thinking about what guests to have, I was like, we have to tell a story, like, of the building. A family that's been in the building for a long time, just a staple of the building. So I am so glad, Claudia, and I'm just so glad that you're both here.

It's been really fun. I understand, like the love connection even happening happened in the building, which I didn't know about until just a couple of minutes ago. So we have a lot of stories to share today, don't we, Marty?

There are quite a few short stories that we need to tell. Yes, absolutely.

All right, well, let's go back to the beginning. So you have been in this building for a long time. Take me back to your roots with a showroom in dmc.

So my father got into the business back in the 70s. He moved down from Chicago and opened up a showroom in 1971. So our business has been going for 50 years strong.

50 years.

50 years. We celebrate our golden anniversary in 21, and I'm so excited to carry on the legacy of his business. And if you want to know the beginnings, I started out in department store retail and I was a Tommy Hilfiger specialist. And I won top salesman in the nation for the Tommy Hilfiger.

That's impressive.

Yeah. And so, long story short, he flew me up to New York and had a big event to offer honor, you know, the best of the best. And I came back and my father says, I think you've got it in your blood. And so I started working with them. And ever since, I just love what I do. It's like I wake up every morning and thank God and just appreciate, you know, all the fun people I get to meet and just the fun fashion and the whole every aspect of the business is just so amazing.

Yeah, you had to be. I mean, growing up in this building, you had to see your father at work, see what he did. I mean, you had to have just a love of retail very early on.

Yeah, I did, as a matter of fact. But funny story is the first time I came on, back when we started, we used to handwrite orders and I thought, oh my gosh, I'm just writing orders in an order taker. And then I started, you know, meeting all these fun people, seeing all the beautiful people and all the fun fashion that they wear and I just absolutely fell in love and I just didn't want to do anything else.

I love it.

Yeah.

All right, well, we've got to hear Claudia. How did you first come to the building?

Well, I am really good friends with another showroom. His name is Scott Blair. And we would, I used to do makeup. I was a makeup artist. So we would do like these fun like makeup pop ups like in the building. And I met Marty like years ago, just through them, through friends. And we kind of reconnected years, like years later, you know, and the rest is history. I mean, I was supposed to move to la, then I had a job. Like I was supposed to work for MySpace, you know what I mean? Really?

And thanks.

You were supposed to work for MySpace.

Thank goodness I had to go work for MySpace because that's, you know, we know what happened with that. But so I just had a feeling he was just such a good guy, you know, that's hard to find, you know what I'm saying? So, you know, I continue to make makeup for a while. After I had kids, I just needed a career that was a little bit more. The schedule was just like so crazy and in makeup artistry. So I decided to come work for him. But I do, I love fashion. My dad used to work for Ralph Lauren corporate. He windows for them. So I just, I have it in my blood as well. And I just, I love everything, just clothes and accessories. I love putting outfits together. I just love the textures. It's all so good.

I mean, how incredible is that, that you both share such a passion for the same thing.

Match made in heaven.

It really is.

And being a salesman, by far my best sale I've ever made by far.

That is so sweet. I, I would also like to say I would vote them best hair in the building.

Oh my gosh.

Can I get an amen?

You too.

You have amazing hair.

Oh, come on. Oh, it's like go up there, you're gonna just notice the hair, like know you're in the right place.

I had, until I had my first daughter, first Picture. That's when I saw my first grade. Those are.

Those are fast. When you had your first grade.

That is right, yes.

So let's talk about this family. You've got two daughters. They're both very active. We were talking about tennis and about soccer.

Yes.

And you both work together. I mean, there's a lot to balance. So talk to me about being business owners and being parents and how you're able to manage it all. What does your schedule look like? How do you keep it all in check?

I feel like it's really important, just like you said, balance.

Yeah.

To be very intentional with your time. Right. So you have. You have time for work, and you just have to be very present in what you're doing and also to carve out time for your family. And, you know, we're with our. You know, I'm with Marty. I'm with the two girls that work with us most of the days of the week. So when we get home, we only have maybe an hour or two carved out for the girls after soccer and tennis and all that. So I just think it's important to find what works for you in your lifestyle, but to make time for the things that matter to you.

Well said. They do love fashion, though, too, as well. And they love coming to help us out at work, which is really nice. So they're learning, you know, a lot of responsibility at a young age, which is nice.

Yeah. They'll get the entrepreneurial spirit in their blood as well, right? Hopefully.

Yeah. I love it.

So working with your spouse on top of it. I work with my husband, Eric, and we work in different ends of our business, but we've had to learn to set some, like, boundaries and guidelines for how we talk about work.

100%.

I get asked this question all the time. So I'm curious if you guys get asked this question, how to best work with your spouse and keep, you know, the marriage conversation and relationship conversations, but then keep work conversations.

Yes.

Separate when need be.

Boundaries after 6pm if he asked me a work question, I don't know you. I don't know who you are. If it has to do with work, I will not answer it.

I'll.

I just. I'm silent. And then he gets it. Is that correct?

I get the hint very easily.

Oh, that's so.

I mean, you have to turn to the point, like, you know what I'm saying? I think it stifles your creativity to work all day.

I couldn't agree more. I couldn't agree more. Yeah. And making sure that the family time is there is one of the most important things. So we definitely cut it off.

It's being present.

That's right. Right.

Being present. I love it. That's my. My boundary is in the morning, like, when you're, like, getting ready and in and out of the shower and everything, I'm not ready yet. Like, this is still family time.

I know.

Once eight o' clock hits, ask all the questions. Otherwise we're not talking about it.

That's right.

Exactly.

All right. So this many years in the building, you guys have seen a lot of changes in our industry. A lot of changes. And I'm sure even just taking the business over from your father, there was a lot of things that you really wanted to make your own. So let's start there. Let's start with before just changes in the industry. Talk to me about just transitioning the business and making it your own and what new. Maybe technology or systems or processes. How did you make that?

Yeah, well, when we first started, it was all done by snail mail, so everything was done literally very slowly. And very calculating too, as well. And obviously moving forward with the Internet coming into play, everything changed. You know, being able to email and having quick answers and being able to conduct business exponentially by scale was just the biggest change that we've. That I saw. And really just not necessarily reinventing the agency because it used to be Eddie, Leon and Associates, and then it became Leon and Associates. When I came on board and I said, you know, let's kind of make it a little more contemporary and go with Ellen Day showroom, which he did fight me a little bit on that, but, you know, eventually he agreed with me and said that was one of the best things you could do. And long story short, he just told me he couldn't be prouder of what I've done and how I've carried on his legacy and really adapted to the changing industry.

I love that.

That's awesome.

Yeah. What do you think? Changes in the industry. Let's move. So you. You grew it, brought it into its own age. And now, I mean, I feel like in the last five years, the industry's changed faster than ever.

Absolutely. With social media playing such an integral part of the industry, fashion changes so quickly. And I think one of the main things that you have to do to be successful in this business is embrace, change and adapt to it. So I think with that being said, the. The would definitely be, again, the Internet and just being able to do business by scale.

Yeah.

And still keeping those relationships strong, even though you may be blasting, you know, hundreds, if not thousands of customers at the same time. Making sure that you pick up the phone, which was such a key thing to do in the past because it was all done by phone. But now to actually pick up the phone and have people answer at this point, it's special because I like developing those relationships. And you get so much more out of direct communication with somebody than you do through email. Because so many things can be misconstrued through. Through email. Yeah, I really like to have that, you know, one on one discussion with people, find out how their business is doing and what we can do to improve it.

Yeah, make it. Selling is relationships. And I think we forget that. Like, I love digital marketing. I'm all about the strategy and just the mass of being able to reach people. But Samantha Connor, I'm looking at you. You're so good at this on our team, but nothing beats the one on one conversation and just building the relationship.

I agree.

You guys have clients that have been customers of yours for many years across multiple brands. And I'm assuming it's once you've built the relationship in the community, you can sell them anything.

Yeah. I mean, they will at least take the time to look and see if it's something that works for them. And that is something that we appreciate our customers for doing is taking the time. Because that is one of the challenges. Being an independent representative is to get them around the room and you have to show excitement for every brand. And maybe not everything is for everybody, but at least they do take the time to take a look. And, you know, I'm thankful for the manufacturers they work with and the brands that we have, because the synergy amongst them all and how they all work together really works well in the room.

It's like community over competition. Right. Which is our entire motto, how everything works together. As you look across the industry, what would you say the most successful retailers that you work with, what do they have in common?

So that's interesting that you asked that because I asked that same question to a lot of boutiques that come into Matisse. And I think the common denominator is three things. It's that they know their clients, they know their customer base, they ask questions, they build those relationships like you said, and they know the trends where they live. Because what's trending in Dallas, even three hours away, is not trending. Maybe it just hasn't hit yet. So really understanding what the buyers are wanting, you know, and they'll let you know, because the buyer, you're gonna know by what they're buying. You know what I'm saying? Also just being really authentic to your business and your brand. There's so many boutiques out there, just like there's so many showrooms out there. And we all get inspiration from each other. But you just have to really know, like, how do you want to add value to the business, right? What is your voice in it if you're authentic about it, like, the people that are meant for you will connect with that and those customers will come to you. And then number three is social media. I hate it for my kids, but I love it for this business. It's such a cool tool that if you are consistent with it. I have a friend who's an influencer and she was like, if you just post a story three times a day and do like a post on your grid like once a week, do it for like a couple of months and you'll be really surprised at like the engagement. I mean, I'm not of professional algorithms, but how that increases, how your followers increase. And not that it's about your followers, but you know, you do want to have some amount of reach and like advertise your business. So just using social media and having fun with it and just being consistent.

So yeah, consistency builds.

I can add on to that too by, you know, the community over competition. This industry is not going to thrive on one showroom or one agency alone. We all have to work as a team and educate ourselves and share ourselves successes and our failures with one another so we can all become better. And I feel the same way with brands too. They can, they can do that as well and they can see what works good for one brand and incorporate something similar to that brand. Because everybody gets inspo from somebody else and fashion is very cyclical. So you may see something that somebody did 30 years ago when I first came into the industry and now it's coming on repeat and I see that constantly, which is really a fun thing to see. So don't get rid of all those clothes in your closet because those vintage.

Ones are coming back. All coming back.

So that's what the most successful retailers have in common. How about the most successful brands that you work with or fellow showrooms in the industry? What do you think the most successful ones on that side of the business have in common?

Yeah, I think relationships. Again, I will go back to relationships. I think that that is one of the most important aspects in this business. This business and the industry is getting to know who you're selling to and where your product is being placed and making sure that it's in the right place and making sure that they buy the right product to make sure that it's successful. So I would say relationships are very, very, very important.

Yeah, yeah, I agree. Whatever all of that he said. Were you asking more like showrooms like us relationships, other showrooms.

Right.

Or just what you see your neighbors on 15, like what are they doing to be successful? Like what do they have in common that makes them successful?

I think again we would go to social media is playing a big part in getting, getting the word out.

Right.

And also again making appointments too for these shows. I think that's very important because if they have you on, on their list in front of them, they're more likely to come see you as well. So those are some of the successes that we see and share with other showrooms. And just, you know, actually becoming friends with them and going out with them and getting to know them more on.

A personal level, building those relationships. Right?

Yeah. And not just on a, on a business level. I mean, I love the people that I work with and I really cherish those relationships. And it's not just a surface level business relationship.

Right.

I think that's one of the most important reasons to come to market. Like obviously there's fill in orders all year long, but yes, you're coming here to touch and feel product, discover new lines. But then building the relationship is really the most important part because you're gonna. I just look forward to seeing people like you said that I've. I've known since they started their business early on and now to see where they're at is incredible.

It's very good story about that because when I did come into this industry the first time, you know, it was my dad and I was like, okay, I'm working in the family business. And then we went to Magic for the first time and I walked into there and everybody knew who he was. It was unbelievable. He was like a celebrity. And people were like, eddie, hey, Eddie. And I just, I saw him in an all new light and I said, I had no idea that you were like this. And he said, one day you'll be like this. And it's really amazing because as I walk in there, a lot of people know me and it feels so good at times. It makes you feel like a celebrity on a certain level and it's just such a feel good thing. And again, that's one of the reasons why I love this industry is just all the connections you make and just the fun and exciting energetic atmosphere that it provides. And especially that you get to share it with people who you've got these fantastic relationships with.

So good. Absolutely.

I love that.

So you mentioned something earlier about making appointments in the showroom. I've got to go back to this conversation a little bit. I. From my vantage point, when I'm working with a retailer who's never been maybe to a show before, they're a little intimidated about going to the showrooms. And I feel like this is a misconception we keep trying to tear down and change. So what misconceptions do you see about people, like not understanding showrooms or like how the process works? They feel a little intimidated sometimes to walk through the door. So what would you say to that retailer who is just learning about shopping in showrooms?

The glass intimidation.

It is, it is the clear wall.

Well, that is one thing that I've really kind of changed in the business model is that I want everybody to feel welcome to come into our showroom. First off, we research these brands to make sure that it matches well with our customers, which we want to hit every customer. We don't want to leave anybody out. So we have prices that range anywhere from very moderate to a little bit more contemporary level. And with that being said, I want them to know that they can come in and find amazing product that we've researched and sourced out that I shop and I tell this to all my people. And Samantha even repeated it today. I like to shop from the inside out. I flip garments on the inside to make sure that the quality is there. So when you come into a showroom, you can rely that we as representatives are going to, going out and searching out for the best brands and the best quality and, and a history, unless we're incubating a brand that they retail and they sell. So I think that that's one of the biggest misconceptions and just that they feel like they're going to be pressured into things. In my showroom, we have an open door policy. Yeah, anybody can come in. They're all welcome. Obviously, appointments are great, but walk ins are so welcome in our showroom, we'll just let you shop. We all serve food in our showroom. We are well known for our mimosas and frozen margaritas. So if you want to have a good time and it's just we try to make you feel comfortable. We have kind of like a museum like atmosphere, but it's a museum where you can touch and feel and have fun. Fun with the products in there. And you know, I pride myself on making sure that the showroom is always in impeccable shape. So you want to look in, you want to come in and you want to see it. So we don't want anybody to be afraid. We all wear smiles and. And I hire a team that I feel is just the same way that exudes the lna showroom atmosphere of, hey, come on in, have a good time. We're going to take care of you. We're not going to pressure you into anything. And hopefully you love the products that we sell.

Yeah. So important. Claudia, what do you think?

I don't know. You kind of said everything that you took all the words out of my mouth.

So yes, I think it's important what you said. It's just anybody can walk in and having an appointment's great because you've got that one on one rep time. But I think it's important that everyone just go and understand it's not that it's an unmanageable price point. Do you want to mention what brands you both work with?

Yeah, I'd love to. Yeah. So I, I've been a part of Vintage Havana is the big one that I've been with for 25 years. So it's a lot of longevity in this industry and you don't hear about that too often. So I'm very thankful for them. I also do hidden denim which I don't know if you guys were around last night, but we had an amazing giveaway where everybody was giving away free jeans which if you're at the shop show today, we're actually going to continue that trend up in the showroom. So if you want to get some some free jeans, we're going to be giving those away too as well. I do officially licensed graphic T shirts and bands with recycled karma. So I know a lot of people do have that concern too when they see band T shirts that they might get in trouble like for Rolling Stones or what, whoever the band may be. We have all the official licenses so you can shop with confidence that you know you're never going to get any in any kind of trouble by shopping. In our showroom we also have an amazing jewelry line in Kinsey Designs which is the quality is amazing for the price. She does all 18 karat gold filled and rhodium plated jewelry, water resistant and just such amazing designs.

She designs everything herself so you're not going to see a lot of crossover.

You know, that's so important about it. And we also have a couple of new people on the block too as well. We have Alaia which is a brand new brand that we're incubating a little bit more contemporary price point we have Madly. She does all custom hats and T shirts. So if you guys ever want to brand your boutiques or even your cities area codes, she can do it all. It's so much fun to work with that.

She has the cutest sweatshirts and like tees that have like all the fun sayings on them.

And we are also do incorporate some of the fast fashion that you would find you know, kind of on 12, but again it is you know, curated to be good quality. So that line would be ably so price points start out very, very, very moderate in that line and it gives you all that fun fashion that you, you might be able to find in the temporaries but up in a showroom so, you know, we offer you the protection and, and the, you know, guidance and care of, of working with the showroom too, as well. And then we also, just recently, and such a great addition to our family, we took on Matisse footwear and their sister companies are Coconuts and Beach, and we took on their corporate showroom on 13 right by us.

Yes. You're in our neighborhood.

That's right.

That's right.

Right on the.

We love it.

And Claudia has taken a major role in managing that brand, which I'm just, just, I'm so thrilled to see her really spread her wings and take over on that aspect. Yes.

Good options. Lots of good options.

Yes.

Awesome. All right, well, are you guys ready for a quick lightning round?

Sure.

Some quick questions?

Yeah, he can do lightning round.

All right, this is one of my favorite questions. You get two hours back in your day to work on income generating activity in your business. What do you focus on first?

Shopping. Who's generating the income? That's the question.

Yes. Yeah, that's not generating. That's. That's giving it away.

It's relative.

Like I said, build, build, building the relationships. Picking up the phone and, you know, finding out how the customers are doing and, and really digging into, you know, what's performing, what's not performing. So I'm educated, and I think that that's so important because that will generate income in the future when I am super educated about knowing what's working and what's not working.

I think that's the neat part about, you know, being a showroom, being a rep. You're a kind of a counselor to the boutiques that work with you. Like, you have eyes and ears and can see the forest through the trees in ways that most people can't. Yeah, it's a very great point.

Well said.

Well said, well said.

All right. What is the best business advice you've received that always sticks with you?

Embrace change. Just as simple as that. Because this is an ever changing industry and you really have to, again, adapt to what, what is working and what's not working. And it's a trial and error.

Truly. It is.

Yes. So I think you got to find what works best for you. And you know you're going to stumble every once in a while, but you learn when you stumble and you grow when you stumble and you know it's. It's going to happen. It's a roller coaster, and it's a fun roller coaster to ride.

It is a roller coaster.

Yes, it is.

100%. Yes.

What about you? Do you have best advice?

Do one thing that makes you uncomfortable every day. One thing that stretches you. It doesn't feel good, you know, but you know, once you do it and you get strong at it, like a muscle, it just gets stronger. And that's how you learn.

So true. All right, what is the best worst business mistake you've ever made?

Best worst business. I think maybe starting my own brand at one point.

Okay, let's hear about it.

I think it taught me quite a bit about what manufacturers go through and, you know, how to really build a business from the ground up. And that's one of. I have to admit, that was one of my successes that I would consider a failure too, because I wanted to spend more time with my family. And at that point, I was a one man show. And I just said to myself, you know what? I need to focus on the task at hand. But again, who knows what the future brings? And I feel like with the knowledge that I've got, maybe there are big things in the future. You just never know what's coming down the line.

It all added to the education piece.

Right?

So true.

Put it in that.

Always learning, Always learning. Every day. Every day.

That's mine, too. Our brand. We started these Bralettes.

Yeah. Named after our daughter.

And we named it after our daughters. And we just had no idea.

Yeah.

The back end. Like what it takes to do that. And we. I mean, you need a team. I mean, obviously we're just very naive, but we laugh about it now.

Yeah. We sold out of all of it. Just didn't want to continue it because it was just too much.

Maybe one day we'll try it again.

That's right. That is true.

So good.

All right. What's one business metric that you swear by beyond just sales? What's a metric that you're like, I have to know this metric every week.

The amount of customers that we have. I think that that's important to know who you're selling to, not necessarily how much you're selling to them, but who you're selling to and making sure that you're opening up new accounts. I think that that's really important is to do the reach outs and find who's out there that you're missing. You know, that might be very advantageous in the future.

Perfect. All right, last quick question. How do you be a great boss?

Lead by example? I think that that would be my biggest thing is that no job is too small or too big for me that I think that that's the best thing to do, is lead by example and really, you know, teach and coach the team. I come in every day and try to give them advice on how to be better at what they do and teach them what I know.

That's right. It's just like we always talk about sports at the boutique. We always compare everything to sports. Right? So if you thought about, like, what is your favorite coach? Soccer coach, because you played soccer. What are your favorite soccer coaches have in common? And then how do you take that back and translate it to your team?

Yes.

Oh, my gosh.

I love that.

Again, they. I think that they lead by example. And I. I'd let you take this over because you're so good about this. You know, she's my HR too, so she is so good.

I mean, I think in this industry, just anything that you want to be really stellar at, you have to train yourself like an athlete, like you said. I mean, you have to take care of yourself on the back end. Like, are you taking care of your physical and your mental health to be able to sustain showing up at work? And then I listened to this podcast by Mel Robbins. I don't know if you guys listen to her, but she's awesome. And there is this one snippet that I was just scrolling through Instagram and she was saying that you got to do the reps, right? You have to do the reps in life. You have to do the stuff that's grueling, that's boring, that you don't want to do. And she kind of compared it to, like, if it were easy to have six pack abs, like, everybody would have them.

Right?

But it's like that work that you do in the in between, that's really going to, like, make a difference and level you up. And that's what I tell to my team. Like, sometimes you just got to show up and you have to be consistent and do the right reps. And it's like that angel saying, if you build it, they will come.

Yeah, yeah.

Just to expand on that, I think that that's great that you said that. But when you hear about overnight successes, 99.9% of the time, those overnight successes have been working behind the scenes for years to get to where they get to. And you don't see it, and you just see them become successful, but yet they worked very hard at it to become what they become.

We could have a whole nother podcast episode just on that topic, right? There's no overnight success. Absolutely. Well, you guys, this has been so wonderful. I just have one last question for you, and this is, I love to end every single podcast episode this way, because I know that I believe, and I think you guys share the same thought, that we aren't just here to sell clothes. No, we aren't here to sell products. Like, we're here just to do so much more in life. And so as you think about your. Your future and your daughters, and you're 30 years down the road, and you're sitting on the front porch with your entire family and extended family, and you're looking back at the business that you've built over the years, what's the legacy that you really want to leave behind? What do you want people to remember most about you and how you both lived?

I'll take this again. My father says that you leave this business and life with one thing, and that's your reputation. And so I want to leave this, my legacy of having a stellar reputation. And everybody really can think about the agency and my family that I work with and. And my nuclear family and extended family as saying, you know what? He's a good man. They're good people, and they do the right thing. And so I think that that's the one thing is. Is. Is having a stellar reputation and really building on that.

I agree with that. You know, I just. I'm very faith based, you know, in my faith. So I kind of like, that's an umbrella for how I live my life. But I just. I want to teach my girls that, you know, you want to do the work, you want to do it with integrity, you want to show up perseverance, grit. I think that's the lesson I want.

Legacy.

I want to leave, like, to teach those lessons because then the fruits of your labor will come naturally. Does that make sense?

Yes.

Yes, absolutely.

So good. And I. And as you're saying, it's funny because I just envisioned, you know, such a family business, such a legacy in this, and I hope that I'm around and I hope that my girls and my center are around to see your girls take over the business.

I love that. Oh, my gosh.
