This week I'm joined by the Retail Professor, Sarah Burks. So happy you're here.
Hello, everybody.
Hi. One thing I love, and I hope that you guys listening appreciate about the podcast, is I like the real honest, like, hey, where are you tuning in from today? What's happening in your life outside of the Boutique Hub today? Tell us where you're at today.
Oh, I am in this little bitty bedroom. We have a really small cabin on a little lake in Wisconsin, and we have a plumbing issue. So I had to come up here to meet a plumber. And so I'm working while I'm waiting for the plumber to come and fix a drain that's not draining. So that is as real as it gets. That's exactly what I'm doing today.
I think the more honest, the more real, the better. Because I think sometimes, like, don't you think social media and just life in general, like, there's There's just too much fluff and feeling like everyone's got it all figured out. But you know what? We all have to deal with some shit, AKA the plumber, every once in a while.
You bet, you bet. And it's on their time and we gotta get this fixed. And yeah, so luckily we have really good internet here, so it worked out really good. I could still do the podcast and, and check both boxes here. And so yeah, but life does not stop, that is for sure. And it's not all unicorns and roses. There's always a backed up sinker. Sewer issues somewhere in our lives. Oh my gosh.
Isn't that the truth? But that's the truth of owning a business. I mean, how many times in business have you felt like, same thing, like nothing stops, the lights do not turn off, there's still customers coming in even if there's a plumbing issue or whatever other piece of chaos happening in the back. And as a business owner, you're wearing 37 hats trying to figure it all out.
Oh my gosh, that is so true. I mean, you just mentioning that gave me a flashback to when we had, one of our stores in Platteville before I closed and came to work for you. Yeah, I remember walking in one day and I had a couple appointments and people that had already made appointments to come in to get ready for a vacation or something like that. And I opened up the back door and I was like, what is that noise? And I walked onto the main floor and there was water just falling from the ceiling. And business had to go on and life continued. And yeah, get the plumber in, get the shop vac people, the, you know, professional vacuum people in to get all the water sucked out and still work with those customers. Because yeah, I wanted to make sure we needed to have some money come in, but also that, you know, I helped them before they were time sensitive and they had a deadline. And anyway, but that is just life in general. Yeah, as a business owner, for sure.
That's life in general. It's funny because as I think about that, I think about like, you know, what you and I do for a living, what we are so blessed and lucky to get to do is to help coach business owners and to give everybody like the latest strategies and, you know, You know, how to set up your business, how to scale, how to optimize, all the things. But the tricky part about doing that is you have to not only have the strategy, but then you have to have the time to actually do the thing, to actually implement it. So talk to me about that, because you and I have had so many conversations about just how busy everyone is and how do we see results quicker with everybody that we work with?
Oh man, yeah, this is definitely something that, you know, I, gosh, every day I open up my inbox or my DMs and I see, you know, pain points coming from small business owners. And that does not stop. There's always something coming at us. You know, and during COVID we made that conversation or that, you know, comparison to feeling like you're running through the woods with a tiger chasing you and you're just running and you keep kind of looking back like, oh my gosh, it's still coming. And, you know, with technology and all the different social channels, all the different selling channels, all the different things, I just feel like that's kind of the position that small business owners are in, is there's just always something coming at us. And so trying to navigate all of that, and, you know, through the lens of being the, the business owner, having my store for many years, I remember there were so many times that my head was down. I say this all the time, my head was down. I was just trying to get the work done. And, you know, I wasn't privy to the information, really what was happening in the outside world.
Yeah.
And before I met you and started with the Boutique Hub, I certainly didn't have a, you know, sounding board or a group of people to really lean on and get guidance from or a heads up about what was happening. And so having been in those shoes as a retailer and now working here at the Hub, man, this is, this is extremely passionate to both of us, is making sure we are the eyes and the ears for those small business owners that are gutting it out every day and trying to get it all done. But realistically, Like you've got to have a system in place to get it done, or you literally feel like you're just that person out in the woods running from the tiger, just trying to stay ahead. And there is a better way. And so that is something we wanted to put into year-round, a year-round opportunity here at the Boutique Hub versus, you know, just small semesters or something like that, because those issues don't go away. They're, they're every day.
Yeah. Gosh, it's funny because every business I feel like faces different periods of, okay, I have to make this huge change if I'm gonna evolve and be ready for what's coming in the future. And sometimes that change is hard. Sometimes that decision to change is really hard. But that was a huge decision you and I made this year was, okay, we've gotta go from the old way of how we were doing things and create something brand new that solves exactly the problems that you're just demonstrating, just year-round support. So for everybody who's not familiar, who's listening, Let's go back, Sarah, to the beginnings of Retail Bootcamp, but more so the beginnings of just our 6-layer strategy and where that came from. The 6 layers of, you know, that tiger's chasing you in the woods. What do I do? How do I actually strategically grow my business? I think you and I have had thousands and thousands of coaching calls and conversations that led us to believe and to know that there is a system. If you follow step 1, step 2, step 3, And build in this order, this is how we get the best desired outcome. Do you want to go back to the beginning of us building that?
Absolutely. Yeah, let's do it. Okay, so one of the biggest things, and it's almost like the big neon flashing sign when you look at someone's business from an unemotional set of eyes, right? Like when you're the business owner and you're doing it, you are, you're just in there and it makes sense to you, or it's up here in your head and it's gonna work out. Well, the unemotional set of eyes, which would be like Ashley and I or other coaches here at the Boutique Hub, when we work with you and you're telling us you're running into situations or you're not making enough money or, you know, inventory sitting on your shelves or you're posting on social and it's not getting the reach and the reaction, we will go back and we peel it all the way back and we find out that it's really a foundational problem. It's really a problem that you have at the very beginning of your business with poor systems and processes, even as much as not knowing who your customer is, or not staying consistent as a brand in the industry, and not understanding the role that you as the business owner play for the customer. So, all that to be said, that falls in place in what we— where we like to start, and where we, like, maybe we're doctors, right? We're looking at this doctor as a health checkup, and we're going back to some of the basics.
Yeah.
Right? You may have a pain point, but what— where's it coming from? And so this is when we built out these 6 layers, these 6 systems that have to be in place in your business. We're going from your foundations to what are those systems that I really need to have in place in my business, then into inventory and products and profit. How do I make the money in my business? How do I— how do I financially make it make sense? How do I fill those gaps, right? How do I pay myself? Those are the big things. But in order to get to there, we've got to have a solid foundation. We've got to have a solid foundation. So start in the foundation, then we're working our way into the financial piece of things. We can't put that— we can't do finances before we really know why we're in business or what our goals are. So as you see, we're building these building blocks, these building steps. And so then once we've established that business mindset and our budgets and we understand who our customer is and what are the products we're going to source for them, what our price points are, all of those things, and we've established a budget and a bookkeeping system, and we understand all the— how the money is moving through our business, right? We're not just excited about the Shopify ding and like, oh yay, I made a sale. When we make that sale, our mind as trained CEOs that we work on so heavily in RBA, It's how much was my profit? Is that a good investment? It's those kind of questions you're asking yourself, not a just, woohoo, I made a sale. It's, is that a good sale? Is it an expense-driven sale? Is it a profit-driven sale? So then from there, we're establishing these budgets that then we can go out and hire and we can delegate and we can offload some different things that are, that have to happen as a business owner.
Yeah.
But then that can free up your time. So yeah, it goes into that. How do I build the team then that supports the growth and the goals that I established way back when I was— when we were working through your foundation? So those are those first 3 systems. So important. And from there, from there and only there, can we move into then sales. And how do I attract that very best customer? And how do I give them the customer experience that's going to keep them coming back over and over again, right? We speak a lot about fans first and being a boutique and what that really means. And making sure that we are a magnet to our customers and showing up for them where they need us to show up for them. Not just saying, oh, yep, I could sell on YouTube or I could sell on Shopify or I could sell at the farmer's market or I could sell it, you know, wherever. We've got to be specific, like where, where is my time best spent? Where's my best return on investment? Where do my, my people need me to be? And so all of that builds out in that sales system, which is our layer 4 in this whole big recipe for success. And then from there, we can move into the content that we're putting out and how do we communicate, right? How are we showing up and showing out for these customers and how are we communicating with them? Because I can communicate, you can communicate with me, but if you're not trying, if you're trying to attract maybe, you know, a Gen Zer, you probably need to shift your focus and the content you're putting out there needs to be different. And that's why we spend so much time in those first few systems, those first few layers of RBA. Right?
Yeah.
And then from there, we, we, the next bridge that we have to cross as business owners is into our marketing. And it's attracting those right customers and staying in front of them and knowing like, what am I actually spending my money on when it comes to marketing? And being confident that I'm attracting those right people. And then the cool thing about this, this program that we've put together is from there, we circle right back into the foundations. And it's, it's a constant wheel of evolution of your business because Think about how your business grew from that first few weeks of talking about your foundation, and you've established all these new systems and you've implemented things and you're attracting the right customers. Well, now your business is growing. The bigger you get, the bigger your problems, and it's time to go back and reassess every one of those layers again.
I think that's the cool part about the 6 layers and the systems in each one is it doesn't matter if you're brand new, it doesn't matter if you've been in business 30 years. It doesn't matter if you're online, brick-and-mortar. Everybody's business really operates the same way and you need to go through in the same order. So many times— and really this is when we built this out to begin with. One of the big reasons we built it in the order we did is because so often business owners get caught up thinking, if I just fix my marketing first, if I just get more customers and more traffic first, everything else will fall into place. And it couldn't be more wrong. I mean, it's a great shiny object, sales, you know, if you can get the traffic, maybe you'll get the sales, and it's gonna feel good for a while, but it's not gonna let you live into your true potential as a business owner if you really haven't built a machine. And that's what the 6 layers do, is it's building you a machine that is a proven repeatable process in your business. So, even again, the multimillion-dollar business owners with 30 years of experience still go back to layer number 1. And redo customer surveys and rebuild customer personas and ask, how has my customer changed this year? And how does my business need to evolve to get there? Especially, you know, not only in the customer aspect, but the other thing we really focus on in that layer 1 is, like you said, operations and SOPs. And Sarah, now with AI, how we operate and how we build SOPs is completely different. So literally every business I bet in the last 12 months has had to go back and rethink, okay, is this the most efficient use of my time, energy, and resources? Is there a better way?
Yeah, I, I really love this because like I said, as your business grows, the bigger you get, the bigger your problems, the change you're making, changes. Efficiency is so important. And I just think so often this whole mentality of, well, this is the way we've always done it, that's, that's just Man, it takes the wind right out of your sails if that's the mentality you have, especially now with all the different tools and tech and AI and all the things. So as you're growing and you're evolving and you're making these better business decisions, your disciplined decisions, whether it's about financial decisions, inventory decisions, all the things, right? You're going to find yourself needing to go back and assess like how I've always done it because maybe there's a better way. Maybe you're taking 25 steps in a process now that could be reduced down to 3. Holy smokes! If every one of those steps is a minute in your day, think about how many minutes you just gained back. And multiply that over like 5 or 6 different things that you're doing, systems you're doing in your business every day.
Yeah.
Everything from the open and close, everything from the balancing of the books, maybe it's the shipping logistics input, you know, receiving goods, quality control checks, maybe, maybe, maybe it's a merchandising reset. But whatever it is, as your business gets more like a well-oiled machine, you can start reducing down on some of the redundancy. And that redundancy is what costs you money. And maybe it's your writing of blog posts, your drafting of emails, all of the different things. And with, with AI, there's, there's a lot of great wins there. And, you know, we want to be very responsible in this and how we're teaching small business owners to use it. It is the wild, wild west out there. And I can be very, you know, I can get lost in AI and using, using chat or something like that the same way that Sarah can get lost going into Canva because I think it's fun and it's cool. Next thing I know, I've just wasted 4 hours of my life in there exploring around doing something that didn't really result in anything, right? So it doesn't matter what it is. That's something we're really passionate about here at the Boutique Hub in general, is to make sure that when you're using something, you're maximizing it.
Yeah.
You're not just using it. You're not just, I don't have, I don't just have a chatbot. I don't just have a chat agent. No, but you are getting, it is working for you. You're not working at it.
Oh, so true. And it goes back to really the information versus the implementation. Like, am I, yes, I'm learning about this, but am I strategically using it the correct way? Hey, boutique owners, quick question for you. Is your website actually helping your business grow or is it quietly holding you back? Because even if your boutique is doing really well, an outdated Shopify site can cost you visibility and sales. Slow load times, cluttered navigation, and broken code can trigger browser penalties that are gonna push you down in search before your customers can even find you. So let me tell you about CJC Dynamic Solutions. They elevate your boutique website with custom branding, clean backend structure, and an intuitive shopping experience that keeps your customers clicking and not bouncing. Your site finally looks like your brand and it actually works the way that it should. You can start with a free website and SEO audit. Just go over to krystaljchapman.com/auditrequest. That's krystaljchapman.com/auditrequest and see what your boutique could actually become. So to put a bow on this whole idea, you know, the 6 layers of retail, the 6 systems that are inside those 6 layers has been built and proven over time and still holds true today. You and I are constantly tweaking what's in them and how we teach them. Really, the strategy still reigns true today. So what you and I built this year and launched this year together is the Retail Bootcamp Accelerator. And let me just start with this, a huge nod to everybody who has gone through Retail Bootcamp, the program, for years and years and years and tested and proven and just, you know, shown up for your business. And we've had so many good experiences with literally thousands of you through Retail Bootcamp. But the piece of feedback we kept hearing along the way was there's just not enough time. There's not enough time to do it all. There's just, you know, too many things I need to work on. I need to go back and strategically think about what you just taught me and then how do I put it in place in my business. And so you and I were like, okay, we need to like go back to the drawing board, rethink how you and I are operating. So the Retail Bootcamp Accelerator was born early this year and this is our opportunity to take these 6 layers And year-round, every single week of the year, no breaks, constant coaching every single Wednesday, and more focused on not just the theory and the strategy, but literally, hey, open your computer screen and let's implement what we just learned this week.
Yeah. Yeah. Everything from, all right, let's get inside your Google Business Profile. Let's go back and make sure it's working for you. It's consistent. You're showing up where you need to show up, getting inside your point of sale system, Doing workshops, no matter if you're on Square or Lightspeed or Shopify, or you're a CommentSold user, bringing in our guest experts to speak directly to your different platforms. Yeah. And doing workshops. And so not everybody sits in the same classroom all the time in RBA. We have the opportunity to divide you up and bring, bring you into those spaces with guest experts to speak directly to your pain point. So it's great when everybody's in the same class together because they can learn and collaborate and all the things. But there are times that we see it's important that CommentSold users get in a room with CommentSold users and let's hash this out. Let's talk best strategy. Lightspeed users, the same. Shopify users, all the things. Brick and mortar girls or stores. Yes. Special occasion. Let's talk about it. Let's have some niche conversations.
Yeah.
And so I'm really pumped about the way we have RBA organized, that we are able to do that. We're able to do these workshops, we're able do some hot seats.
Yeah.
Um, it's, it's, it's definitely implementation and accountability. And, uh, the— with Boss System being involved, it's taking everything we've learned, everything you're doing, everything you, you're, you're building out in your business, putting it all into the Boss System. That's the Boutique Hub operating system we've been talking about, and everything's in one spot. So, man, I just— the growth that we've already seen from the people using it Yeah.
They have—
the reviews have been fantastic. So I'm really excited how this is advancing the small business owner who feels overwhelmed and who feels stressed with all the things on my to-do list. They feel like, hey, I'm breathing again. This is working.
I love that. So just to reiterate what's in Retail Bootcamp Accelerator, obviously the year-round group coaching, Sarah and I every Wednesday, the opportunity to break into small groups like Sarah said, which I think is so helpful. The workshops are a brand new thing for us. We've got a holiday workshop that we've got coming up for RBA students. We have an end-of-year tax prep workshop that we've got coming up. I'm really excited about those guest experts every single week, all year long, every single Thursday. And then 2 things I want to dig into just a little bit deeper. One is BOSS. We're going to talk about that next because that is completely brand new and helps really speed up the implementation process. But something else that we've done, and we're going to talk about this later too, is we've included membership. Our general Boutique Hub membership is now inside of the Retail Bootcamp Accelerator membership. So there is an overarching strategy as to why that's happening, and I'm going to give you a sneak peek into that at the very end of the podcast. But there's a lot more developments coming along, adding membership to different programs, so I'm excited about that. But Sarah, let's focus on BOSS for a minute. You mentioned it, Boutique Hub Operating System. If someone's never heard of it before and they're like, what is this and what problem does it actually solve for my business? What would your answer be?
Oh man, I— if you've seen the movie Devil Wears Prada and the chick that follows you around with a clipboard and is advising you and telling you, oh nope, don't do this, you need to do this, remember this, blah blah blah, or I've already done this for you. Nope, I did that. Oh, and here's your coffee, by the way.
Yeah.
Boss is not probably gonna hand you the coffee, but Boss, when, when you train your Boss properly, and we have weekly onboarding sessions for Boss, we have office hours for Boss. So it's literally a no one left behind system when you, when you're building your, your specific Boss program. It's not, you don't have the same Boss program as the next boutique owner in, in RBA. You're building it specifically for yourself.
Yeah.
So when you have that and you're building that out, it's growing, it's getting smarter, and it is literally like your own personal assistant. Everything from time management and inventory and financial decisions, team management, content creation, you know it. We, we're working on getting it all built out in there. Right now, I think one of the coolest things that I see it doing for, for our store owners is basically being— taking everything that I know I had in binders and notebooks and putting it all in one place. that you can search up any of your notes. You can search up any of like your past events that you're doing. We're showing you when you— let's just use, let's just use 4th of July because this is, you know, Yeah. 4th of July holiday. It's a kind of a— it's a fun, great holiday. We do a lot. But as a retail, it kind of gets forgotten about because we're so busy in the spring, right? So the way we're building this out is you're going to start getting notifications from your BOSS system way back early spring saying it's time to order your 4th of July. This is what you did last year. These were your best vendors. These were your best classes. These were your customers that bought the most from you at this time. All those kind of things, it's going to be able to prompt you for that. So as you're building out an event or a promotion, it's really in the background analyzing your data, analyzing your sales, your customer behavior, all of those things, and advising you saying, yes, do this. No, don't do this. And don't forget, you're going to this pop-up. You need this list to take with you. Yeah, right. Like all of those kind of things as you're talking to it and training it, and it's going to know your sales from those times. It's going to know all of those things. So it's basically, yeah, it's like that little personal assistant walking around with the, with all the information. Yeah, right now.
I love that analogy. And really, like, okay, so what does it replace that you're already using? Many of you have your own, you're using Chat or Claude, or you have an AI system, right? Boss is its very own AI system, much like those. But the difference is it's actually built off of the base of all the Boutique Hub's years and years and years of knowledge, much like Ask Ashley is inside of the Boutique Hub, but kind of like souped up. So it's trained on all the Boutique Hub's information, but then it's directly integrated into your data. So your Shopify connection, your Square connection, your Lightspeed connection, just getting your specific business data into Boss so that then every single conversation you have with it, every suggestion, every to-do list, everything is based off of, again, your data, complete AI knowledge base, and all of the Boutique Hub's knowledge base combined into one. So it's also taking things like the Boutique Boss Planner, opportunities to optimize your business through the 6 layers of retail. We have it trained on all that knowledge so you can quiz how you're doing related to the 6 layers of retail. It'll help you optimize your website, it'll help you plan marketing plans, it will Bulk PO uploads to Shopify, so you simply like insert a PO into Boss and it's like I've created all of these products for you. They're all done. You just have to review them. There's really no limit to what's being built inside of the system in order for it to be that assistant. Like Sarah said, it can't give you coffee, but it can darn near do everything else that you need an assistant to do.
I and the the new advancements that it's making with with HR and with your team management and your hiring process. And Bridie and I are so excited about this part because this was really a lot of, a lot of what she has been working on as far as helping small business owners hire better and retain their talent. The, the tools put into Boss, man, it's going to take such the heavy lift off of you, that small business owner trying to manage your people.
Yeah.
I'm super excited about that.
Literally all of your operating documents, all of your training documents, allowing your staff to get in there and just optimize how they're working smarter for you. I mean, there's, there's no limit. We could go on and on about BOSS, but I know you and I, we've got about 5 minutes left to chat. There will be a whole nother podcast about BOSS coming out. So if you guys want to learn more about it, as of today, as we're recording this podcast right now, BOSS launched first to our Retail Bootcamp Accelerator program. Program. So what a huge opportunity for everyone inside to be beta testers, to help build the future, to give feedback that's going to shape how Boss is going to impact the entire boutique industry. But Sarah, let's take a big step back because literally The Hub, our whole business model, we decided this year to like rip it apart, rebuild it, and at Summit relaunch the whole thing. So kind of a big overview if I can share. Um, we added the membership, our general membership, into Retail Bootcamp. But we're— we've got hopes, we've got plans of adding that membership into other products as well and then expanding Boss to be a part of our 3 core products. So no matter who you are and where you are, when you say I'm a member of the Hub, whether that's Boutique Hub Black, Retail Bootcamp Accelerator, or general membership, everybody is a general member and everybody gets access to Boss. So trying to streamline that decision-making process and also streamline where do I find this and where do I find that and do I have Yes, we're trying to make that simpler and more cost-effective for everybody. How would you describe the big overarching process we're in?
Oh gosh, I mean, it's, it's one solution, right? Like, you— we don't want it to be difficult. Running a business is difficult on its own, but being a Hub member should never be difficult. And there's so many things that you— we know you need in general membership. We don't want anybody to— we didn't want anybody to have to make decisions or forget about something And putting it all together just makes so much sense. The tools and the resources and the discounts that are available in at the starter level in the general membership, they're, they're huge for every business owner as you grow. And our partners are— I got to give a hats off to some of our service providers that, well, all of them we partner with the best of the best in the industry. And you as small business owners have access to that as a Hub member. So whether you're in general membership or then you advance into RBA or you're in Botica Black, you know, if you're using Canva or you're using Shopify or you use QuickBooks or you ship with UPS or, or anything, or you need somebody to help you with email flows or redoing your website or whatever that might be, shipping logistics, we have partners in that space that can save you. We just did this the other day and actually it is amazing all the many discounts that general member, like that go with just general general membership. I added them all up and it exceeded $25,000.
Oh my God.
It was crazy. Now granted, not everybody needs every one of those services, but I mean, if you're looking to trademark protect something or you want some copyright protection or you have just contract law issues and you want some, you know, you need to hire an attorney or you are looking for a CPA or you name it, somebody to help you with your photography, we have partners in those spaces. And one of the things that we ask is, you know, would you be willing to offer a membership discount? And they are like, absolutely.
Yeah.
So when you think about the money that you can save, I— it just, it's so important. That's why we— another reason we want to make sure all those discounts are available to any Hub member, no matter where you're at. Yeah. In your journey of business.
So important. So hopefully you guys that are listening, uh, our idea is— our view on the industry is every single retailer, every single business owner should be able to save money and find the resources to build their business with general membership. It literally is for everybody no matter who you are. And those partners make it possible. The wholesale brands we work with make it possible. And all the community connections inside of general membership. And then we have the new Retail Bootcamp Accelerator membership which is, okay, I'm moving from general membership into now I want strategic growth step by step by step, weekly live coaching, that's Retail Bootcamp Accelerator plus the Boss System. And then if you're like, okay, I've, I've got that, like, I feel like I've got the solid strategy, I'm feeling really good about the foundation of my business, the operations, the team, all of it. Now I need to pour the marketing dollars on top and I want to learn how to run Facebook ads and optimize my Google, my SEO, all of that, then that's Boutique Hub Black, which eventually will also include Boss As well. So it's step 1, step 2, step 3. Membership is going to be included with all. We're so excited to be unveiling, uh, all of this strategy to make your guys' life easier as members and get you to the resources you need faster.
