Five Minute Friday: 3 Business Beliefs That Are Keeping You Stuck
10 Jul 2026 · 6 min
In this Five Minute Friday episode, the primary speaker outlines three limiting beliefs that keep entrepreneurs stuck and offers concrete advice to overcome them. First, they argue against waiting until you feel ready, emphasizing that asking for opportunities—illustrated by a story of cutting in line at an airport—opens doors. Second, they reject "winging it," stressing that thorough preparation—knowing your numbers, researching participants, rehearsing pitches—creates confidence, likening the process to a farmer preparing soil before planting. Third, they caution against chasing many directions, urging focused, long‑term goal setting, written commitments, and consistent effort to build momentum. The episode closes with host Ashley Alderson encouraging listeners to engage on Instagram, share the episode, and leave reviews, reinforcing community interaction.

Do you want to know the 3 things that I absolutely do not believe in? The 3 things that I know are not going to get you ahead in business? Okay, I'll share them with you. And I have to say, these are things I just do not believe in when it comes to growing your business. And honestly, I think it's these 3 beliefs that keep a lot of people stuck. Who knows, maybe you're guilty of holding on to one of these beliefs. Let's jump into it. Number 1, I don't believe that you should wait until you feel ready. Most people are waiting too long. They're waiting until they feel confident. They're waiting until they know enough. They're waiting until everything is perfect. Meanwhile, the people that are getting the opportunities are the ones that are just willing to ask. They're asking for the meeting. They're asking for the sale. They're asking for the partnership. They're asking for the opportunity. You would be shocked about how many doors open simply because you're willing to knock. An example of this was recently I was traveling abroad and I had a connection through Miami. Of course, my flight was delayed, and so when I landed in Miami to try to make the connection, I had to go out, go through customs, go back through TSA, and the window of time was getting short. And as I got in that long line, I kept looking at my watch thinking, I'm never going to make this flight, I'm never going to make this flight, an idea pops into my head. Why don't I just ask? Why don't I just ask if I can get ahead in the line? Why don't I just ask if I can be first? So I tapped on the shoulder of the person ahead of me and I said, hey, I think I'm going to miss my connecting flight. Do you mind if I cut in line? Can I pass you? They said, sure, I hope you'd do the same for me. And I said, of course I would. And so it went. I went down the line tapping shoulders, asking, can I get in front of you? Hey, I'm gonna miss my flight, I gotta hurry. Do you mind if I just slip in front of you? And before you knew it, I was at the front of a line simply because I'd asked. I got through, I got to my flight, and I actually made it home on time and didn't miss that connection. But none of that wouldn't have happened at all, wouldn't have happened at all if I hadn't just asked. No one is going to hand you permission. No one's going to look at you and say, hey, can I help you get in front of all these people? You're going to have to ask. And you can do it. Number 2, things that I just don't believe in. I don't believe in winging it. Preparation matters, and it matters a lot. The people who stand out in business are usually overly prepared. They know their numbers. They know who's in the room. They've researched it. They've practiced their pitch over and over again, and they thought about the questions that they might be asked before they were even asked. A lot of people look at the successful ones and say they just got lucky, but it's not luck, it's preparation. And confidence comes from being prepared. You know, I think a lot about, um, plants and seeds when it comes to this. And, um, you may not know this, but I come from a long line of Idaho potato farmers. This is a fun fact. Most people don't know this about me. And I remember, um, going and seeing my grandma And the majority of time there was nothing growing in her fields, but she was preparing the fields and they were tilling the soil and making sure that it was aerated and it had been fertilized properly. And then it was, it was strong, good foundation to plant those seeds in. And then there was a very short period of time when the seeds were in the ground and there was growth. And that makes me think a lot about business, the amount of time that you put into building your foundation and preparing and getting ready. The part that's happening underground, that's the most important part. And so if you aren't putting in the time right now to prepare, whether it's preparing for success in Q4 or preparing to hire a new employee, or maybe preparing to launch a system, if you're not putting in that prep time, you are not going to get the kind of growth and gains that you want. All right. Number 3, I don't believe in chasing a hundred different directions. We've got to stay focused. Pick a goal and go after it long enough to actually build momentum. Write it down. Most businesses stay stuck because they change direction every few weeks. They never give it enough time to actually take off. They're always chasing a new strategy, a new platform, a new idea, a new distraction. You can't hit a target that you refuse to define, and success comes from compounding results. Brick after brick, rep after rep, you've got to put in the time. And if you're constantly changing direction, then you're never going to get ahead. Stay focused and get clear about what you really want. Do you want more revenue? Do you want better systems? You want wholesale growth? Maybe you want more freedom or a stronger team. Then stay focused long enough to make it happen. Write down your goal so that you can be held accountable. You know, the people that are getting ahead of you are not always smarter or more talented. A lot of times they're just willing to ask for the opportunity, put in time to prepare, and stay consistent longer than everyone else. So which one of these beliefs is holding you back? Identify it and break that belief and watch your business grow in ways that you've never imagined.
