Hi everyone, it's Juliette here with BoutiqueBookkeeping.co. Today I'm going to talk to you about something that we've been getting a lot of questions about lately: Shopify's automated sales tax filing. Automated doesn't always mean accurate, and that's something that business owners really need to understand when it comes to sales tax. A lot of boutique owners assume that when they turn automation on, everything is fully taken care of. But the reality is Shopify might file your sales tax returns, but they don't take responsibility for making sure that it's done correctly. At the end of the day, you as the business owner are still the one responsible for what's being filed. And because the system is automated, there's no human reviewing your filings or catching issues that could potentially slip through. Things like marketplace sales, VAT being double-counted, unsupported sales channels, or missing transactions from certain apps or integrations. There are also some limitations that business owners might not realize. Shopify doesn't handle state registrations. They don't support prepayments. If something is filed incorrectly, Shopify will not do an amendment. They recommend you seeking a professional. Even Shopify's own disclaimer reminds users that tax laws change frequently and that business owners are responsible for making sure that taxes are filed correctly. Now, that doesn't mean automation is bad. Automation tools can absolutely be helpful and save time, but they should support the process, not replace oversight entirely. This is why understanding your numbers matter so much. Reviewing your reports, knowing what's actually been filed, and having someone keep an eye on the bigger picture—this is what truly protects your business. If you're currently using automated filing and you haven't reviewed your setup in a while, this is probably a good time to take a closer look and make sure everything is working the way you think it is. And if sales tax is something that has been causing stress and confusion in your business, this is something that our team at Harquin helps boutique owners do every single day. We handle sales tax filings, registrations, reporting, and ongoing support so that business owners don't feel like they're navigating this all alone. I hope this helps answer your questions and clear up any confusion you may have and get you on the right path with your sales tax. Thank you for listening.
