Five Minute Friday: To Be Interesting, You Have To Be Interested
24 May 2024 · 0 min
Ashley Alderson argues that to be interesting, you have to be genuinely interested in others. Show up as the person you want to see in return, whether at markets, networking events, or in leadership roles.

Business can be a lonely game. But it doesn't have to be. Welcome to Boutique Chat, where we explore community over competition and how to scale your company with the balance and the happiness that we all seek. We'll hear from product based businesses of all types, retailers, e commerce and wholesale brands, along with industry experts shaping the future of our industry. I'm your host Ashley Alderson from the Boutique Hub and I can't wait to chat.
Hey guys. I recently heard this quote and I thought it was so important to share with you. I actually also recently shared this with our mastermind and we had an entire conversation around what does this mean for you and your business? And the quote is this. To be loved, you have to love. To be friends, you have to be friendly and, and to be interesting, you've got to be interested. So what does that mean exactly? You know, so many times today when we are in a social setting, we're at market, we're at the Boutique summit, we're out and about in the community. It's easy to want to make friends and, you know, to have people want to hear more about your business. But in order to get people interested in your business, you first have to be interested in theirs. I encourage you with whatever social setting you're entering into or whatever live video you're doing next on your social media, or how you're framing and scheduling out all of your social media content, I just encourage you to show up as the person that you want to see in return. It kind of is like the golden rule, right? Treat other people how you want to be treated. So I'm encouraging you to think about how are you showing up for other people in your business versus how are they showing up for you? I think this is also important when it comes to being a great boss. If you're not seeing your employees really act in a way that you'd hope they would, how are you leading them? By example? Or if you don't love how your customers are treating you, how are you treating them? Or if you don't love how your customers are treating you, how are you treating your vendors? Is it the same way your customers are treating you or are you flipping the script? So I encourage you, whatever the challenge is you're facing today, to just flip the script on it and say, hmm, am I being interesting or am I being interested? Because I will get whatever I give at the end of the day. So the next time you show up, you're at a social event, you're networking, you just want to build a community and you want to build a relationship, remember to be interesting, you first have to be interested in other people.
