Inside Volie: P.O.V. from Our Youngest Developer

Justin Davis, Volley's youngest developer, talks about moving from intern to junior developer. He discusses what he's built for the app, the mentors who shaped him, and what the work culture is actually like.
Foreign. Hello everyone. Welcome back to another volley rally. Today I'm joined by Justin Davis, who for those of you who don't know, is the final member of the Davis clan that you all have not met here with Valley. So Justin, how's it going?
Good, how are you, Jake?
Doing great. So as most of you know, Vali started as not entirely some family friends and business partners too, but a lot of the family and close friends and we've kind of grown from there. Justin is the final member of the clan, so excited to bring him on here. And Justin, why don't you tell us a little bit about what you're doing with volley?
Yeah. So I am currently working as a junior developer part time while I started out as an intern about a year ago. And right now I'm working full time in between during the summer before I go to college. Once I start going to college, then I will obviously be working part time.
But. Yeah, well, I know that for those of you watching, we probably look the same age, so. But just in case we don't. Justin, What? Where are you at in college? So did you just graduate high school?
Yes, I just graduated high school. I'm going to be a freshman in college next year.
Okay, and what do you mean by you were working as an intern for volleyball?
Well, obviously as a high school senior I didn't really have too much work experience, so Volley allowed me to work part time and kind of branch out and develop my own skills so that I could eventually be successful in my own career and grow as a person to where I am now.
So what are some of the skills you obviously now you're a full time employee, not just Scott's kid, working for free as an intern. So what are some of the things that you've worked on in Volley? What are the skills you've had? But what are some of the things in the app that you've touched that people would know about?
So some kind of high profile things I've worked on, I've done a lot of. I'm sure anybody who's listening has noticed we're kind of phasing out the old style Rails pages and migrating them to our new style. So I've been in charge of migrating most of these old pages and updating them with new features. Most recently in the communication center, I have done the customer opt in out table. So allowing an individual customer to be opted out of email, sms, phone and by individual email and phone number, et cetera, et cetera.
Correct. So this is what all of you have seen on the volley 15 a couple of weeks ago and hopefully you all know what we're talking about. New addition to the communication to the call screen. So all awesome stuff there. What, or I should say, who has helped you grow to where you are today?
Definitely my oldest brother Sam has definitely been the greatest help in my professional career. He got me started in programming when I was just a little boy and now he guides me through various tasks and helps me whenever I need clarification on something and has overall been a great mentor. Besides him, my team lead Antoine and previously Amanda and Nick have all been incredible help in my professional career.
So what's it like working with Valley again? You're Scott's youngest kid. You know what, how does it, how does it, how does it go for you working with the team?
It's incredibly stress free if that makes sense. Like yes, there are deadlines for certain tasks, but overall if you mess up, you're not going to be berated for it. You'll have things pointed out to you so you can do better in the future. And overall it is just an incredible work environment where I can grow and learn as a junior developer.
What's been a highlight of your time so far working with Volley?
Nothing actually to do with the job. I really love the culture that is present at Volley. I love all my co workers. We just came back from the Volley summer meeting where all the employees gathered in Florida and we all got to see face to face. Everyone's just really nice. Everyone in Volley is just really down to earth and really nice. So that's my favorite part of working at Volley.
Yeah, that's great to hear. It's certainly fun. We have a great team that's interesting because it's still a great team and a great culture to work with making.
Actual products that people use. So if I had to say, if there was any goal, just continue to strengthen my own skills and.
Oh good. Well, it'll be great to watch you grow both as a family member and also as a the youngest member of our Volley team. Peek into another one of our team members. We it's been a little bit since we've done a team member spotlight, but it's always good to bring someone on and in this case, our youngest team member. So thanks Justin for taking the time.
Thank you for having me, Jake.
Have a great day everyone. Thanks for tuning in. Let us know if you have any questions or want to hear about anything else. Have a fantastic day.
