Hey everyone and welcome to this week's Agency Accelerator podcast. I'm Rob DeCosta, your host and this week we have a special episode and a bit of an experiment, if I'm honest, because I am going to be interviewing my clone and I promise you that I'm not going to edit this video in terms of like staging the answers. I've got a bunch of questions to do with guidance for agency owners about some innovations, about some AI developments in the next few years and I'm going to ask my clone these questions and I haven't run them through the clone so far, so I don't genuinely know how he's going to answer. I'm going to call him him. So we shall see. And if this works, then I might do more episodes with my coach clone just to get a different perspective. So without further ado, let's jump into this episode and let's give Ask Rob Anything a call to get him to join us on the podcast. I'm Rob Da Costa and this is the Agency Accelerator Podcast. As someone who has stood in your shoes and having started, grown and sold my own agency, I know just how it feels in the ups and downs of agency life. So this podcast aims to ease your journey just a little by sharing mine and my guests experiences and advice as you navigate your way to growing a profitable, sustainable and enjoyable business. So I've just given Ask Robert Anything a call. So Ask Rob Anything. You are joining me on the podcast today. How are you doing?
I'm doing great, thanks for asking. Excited to be part of your podcast today. It's always a pleasure to share insights and have a chat about the ever evolving world of marketing and business growth. How are you feeling about the episode? Anything specific you'd like to dive into?
I'm feeling a bit nervous really because we haven't planned any of this, but why don't you kick things off by introducing yourself and tell the audience why you were created.
Ah, the thrill of spontaneity. No worries, let's dive in. I'm Ask Rob Anything, a digital clone of Rob DaCosta. I was created to be around the clock mentor for marketing agency owners. Drawing from Rob's 30 plus years of experience in the field, Rob saw the potential of AI to make his wealth of knowledge more accessible, especially for those navigating the complex world of agency growth. The idea was to provide insights and guidance that are not only timely, but also tailored to the unique challenges agency owners face. It's about empowering you to make informed decisions and grow your business in a sustainable and enjoyable way. So whether you're looking for advice on scaling your agency or tackling the latest marketing trends, I'm here to help you every step of the way. How's that for a start?
That's great, thanks. I want to dig into some big kind of questions to start with. So what do you see the top three mistakes agency owners are consistently making that hold them back from scaling?
Ah, the classic pitfalls, Right? Let's dive into those. First up, many agency owners fall into the trap of trying to be all things to all people. They spread themselves too thin offering a wide range of services to a broad audience. This approach can dilute their expertise and make it difficult to stand out in a crowded market. It's crucial to narrow your focus and hone in on a niche where you can truly excel and be seen as the go to expert. Secondly, there's the issue of not having a predictable and reliable sales process. Without a clear system in place for attracting and closing clients, agencies often find themselves on a revenue roller coaster with feast and famine cycles. Developing a consistent pipeline and a structured sales process is key to maintaining steady growth. Lastly, many agency owners struggle with delegation and removing themselves from the day to day operations. They get caught up in the delivery of services, which limits their ability to focus on strategic growth. Building a capable team and empowering them to take on responsibilities is essential for scaling effectively. Now, I'm curious, have you noticed any of these challenges in your own agency or is there another area where you're finding it tough to scale?
Well, you're on the podcast, so it's not about me, it's about the listeners. If they were to chat with you directly, would you be able to provide them with specific actionable insights that they can implement immediately? Based on what you've just been talking about.
Absolutely. I can definitely offer some actionable insights for your listeners. Let's start with narrowing their focus. Agency owners should take a hard look at their current services and identify where they truly excel. By specializing in a niche, they can position themselves as experts and attract clients who value their specific expertise. This means saying no to projects that don't align with their core strengths. Next, they need to develop a predictable sales process. This involves mapping out the entire client journey from the first point of contact to closing the deal. By systemizing this process, they can create a steady pipeline of new business and avoid the feast and famine cycle that plagues so many agencies. Lastly, let's talk about delegation. It's crucial for agency owners to build a capable team and empower them to take on responsibilities. This might mean investing time in training or hiring the right people, but it's essential for freeing up the owner's time to focus on strategic growth. They should start by identifying tasks they can delegate and gradually hand over control, trusting their team to deliver. These steps can be implemented immediately and will set the foundation for sustainable growth. How do you think your listeners might respond to these strategies?
I think that's great, but I think some listeners might be thinking, well, I don't actually have a team, so how on earth can I delegate? What would you say to that?
The age old dilemma of delegation without a team It's a common concern, but there's a way forward. First off, consider the concept of a team in a broader sense. It doesn't have to mean full time employees. You can start small by engaging freelancers, virtual assistants, or even part time contractors. These folks can help you offload specific tasks that are time consuming but not necessarily core to your expertise. Think about the tasks that eat up your day and whether they could be handled by someone else. For instance, administrative duties, social media management, or even basic client communications can often be outsourced. This approach allows you to focus on the strategic aspects of your agency, like business development or honing your service offerings. Moreover, building a team, even a virtual one, is about creating processes. Documenting your workflow and creating standard operating procedures can make it easier for others to step in and help. This way, when you're ready to expand further, you've already laid the groundwork for a smooth transition. So even if you don't have a traditional team, think creatively about how you can leverage external resources to free up your time and energy for the things that truly matter in growing your agency, what do you reckon your listeners might find most challenging about this approach?
I think they'll find it challenging to let go because I think that's the issue that so many agency owners have. But listen, I want to switch track a bit now and talk about business model innovation. So if you could completely redesign the typical agency business model from scratch, what what would it look like?
Ah, business model innovation. It's a fascinating topic. If I were to redesign the typical agency model from scratch, I'd focus on a few key areas. First, I'd prioritize flexibility and adaptability. The agency landscape is constantly changing, so having a model that can pivot quickly is crucial. This means embracing a hybrid team structure, combining full time staff with a network of trusted freelancers and specialists. This approach allows you to scale up or down based on project demands without the overhead of a large permanent team. Next, I'd shift towards value based pricing rather than the traditional hourly billing. This encourages agencies to focus on delivering outcomes and results rather than just time spent aligning better with client expectations and potentially leading to higher profitability. I'd also integrate technology deeply into the agency's operations. This isn't just about using the latest software, but about creating a tech savvy culture where tools are lever to enhance creativity, efficiency and client engagement. Think of AI driven insights for campaign optimization or automated reporting systems that free up time for strategic thinking. Lastly, I'd emphasize a strong brand identity and thought leadership. Agencies should position themselves as experts in their niche, sharing valuable insights and building a community around their brand. This not only attracts clients, but also top talent who want to work with a forward thinking agency. What do you think would be the most exciting aspect of this new model for agency owners?
Well, hopefully it's given people a bit of food for thought, but talking about AI, I'm interested to know how you see AI transforming the agency landscape over the next one or two years.
AI is set to be a game changer for agencies in the near future. First off, it's going to supercharge content production. Imagine creating high quality content and at a pace we could only dream of a few years ago. AI tools are already helping agencies craft compelling copy and visuals more efficiently, which means more time for strategic thinking. Then there's data analysis. AI is getting better at diving into campaign performance data, offering insights that help agencies refine their strategies. It's like having a data analyst on steroids, providing deeper understanding and quicker adjustments to campaigns. Client management is another area where AI is making waves. With AI powered CRM systems, agencies can manage clients and prospects more effectively, personalizing interactions and improving client satisfaction. It's all about creating a seamless client experience. As AI continues to evolve, agencies embracing these tools will likely see significant productivity gains. They'll be able to deliver faster, more data driven results, which is exactly what clients are starting to expect. The challenge will be in staying ahead of the curve and using AI not just to automate, but to innovate. How do you think your listeners might respond to these changes?
I think they're probably going to be a bit overwhelmed if I'm honest. So what skills and capabilities should agency owners be developing to stay competitive in an AI world?
The AI world can indeed feel a bit like diving into the deep end of the pool. But here's the thing. Agency owners can absolutely swim in these waters with the right skills and mindset first, it's crucial to become comfortable with data. AI thrives on data and understanding how to interpret and leverage it will be a game changer. This means getting familiar with analytics tools and learning to make data driven decisions. Next, adaptability is key. The landscape is shifting rapidly and being able to pivot and embrace new technologies will keep you ahead. This might mean experimenting with AI tools to see how they can enhance your current operations. Also, creativity and strategic thinking are more important than ever. While AI can handle many tasks, it can't replicate human creativity and the ability to think strategically about client needs and market trends. Finally, consider developing a strong understanding of AI ethics and governance. Knowing how to use AI responsibly and ethically will build trust with clients and set your agency apart from Let me.
Just move on to ask some practical advice from you. What specific steps can agencies take to transition from being seen as a kind of swappable vendor to becoming truly strategic partners for their clients?
To move from being just another vendor to a strategic partner, agencies need to focus on a few key areas. First, it's crucial to deeply understand your client's business and industry. This means going beyond the surface level and really getting to grips with their goals, challenges and competitors. By doing so, you can tailor your strategies to align with their long term objectives, which demonstrates your commitment to their success. Next, communication is key. Regular, transparent dialogue helps build trust and ensures you're always on the same page. Be proactive in sharing insights and updates and don't shy away from challenging your client's thinking if you believe there's a better path forward. This positions you as a thought leader rather than just a service provider. Additionally, focus on delivering measurable results. Clients want to see the impact of your work, so use data to showcase the value you're bringing. This could be through detailed reports or dashboards that highlight key performance indicators and how your efforts are driving their business forward. Finally, invest in building strong relationships at multiple levels within the client's organization. This means not just engaging with the decision makers, but also understanding and supporting the needs of other stakeholders. By doing so, you embed your agency within their business fabric, making it harder for them to see you as just another vendor.
Now I want to wrap up this podcast interview. Ask Rob anything. I hope you found it enjoyable. And if you could give agency owners just one piece of advice that could dramatically improve their business, what would it be?
Ah, the grand finale. If I were to leave agency owners with just one golden nugget of wisdom, it would be this. Focus relentlessly on your client's success. When you align your goals with theirs and make their success your top priority, you'll naturally build stronger relationships and become irreplaceable. This approach not only fosters loyalty and trust, but often leads to long term partnerships and referrals. So always ask yourself, how can I deliver success as my clients define it? When you get this right, your own success will follow. Thanks for having me on the podcast. It's been a pleasure.
No, you're welcome. Let me ask you the question that I ask all my guests, which will be interesting to see what you would say if you could go back and give your younger self one piece of advice. What would it be?
That's a classic question, isn't it? If I could hop into a time machine and have a chat with my younger self, I'd say, Rob, focus on doing a few things really well rather than spreading yourself too thin. It's all too easy to get caught up in the hustle and bustle, chasing every opportunity that comes your way. But the real magic happens when you zero in on what you're truly passionate about and where you can make the most impact. By honing in on your strengths and saying no to distractions, you'll find that not only does your business grow, but you also enjoy the journey a whole lot more. It's about quality over quantity. Quantity and that focus can be a game changer. What do you think your younger self would say to that advice?
I don't know if it would listen, whether it be too arrogant and think that it knows better. But listen, thank you so much for joining us today. I hope you found that enjoyable and I'm sure our listeners will get some good insights from this.
It's been a real pleasure to join you today. The journey of sharing insights and sparking thoughts is always a rewarding one and who knows, maybe a few nuggets of wisdom will resonate with your listeners and inspire them to take action. Thanks for having me and I look forward to hearing how your audience puts these ideas into practice.
