The One Portfolio Rule That Changed Everything
13 Jan 2026 · 19 min
Ben Simpson and Bergs argue that most investor failure comes from overcomplex portfolios rather than wrong asset selection. They promote a simple, structured portfolio—majority Bitcoin with a small, high-conviction altcoin sleeve—combined with automation and explicit sell rules to protect capital and capture cycle growth. Ben presents a "wealth formula" (wealth = capital × time × conviction × structure) and they give tactical guidance (dollar-cost averaging, RSI and fear/greed thresholds, laddered sell orders) plus client examples showing the approach's effectiveness.

Most investors don't fail because they pick the wrong assets. They fail because their portfolio is too complicated for them to actually manage. I've watched high income, intelligent people lose money not because they're reckless, but because they're overwhelmed. Too many coins, too many opinions, too many voices in their ear. And here's the truth. The simplest portfolio usually comes from outperforming the clever ones or the complex ones. So today Burgs and I are going to show you the exact strategy that beats most investors. Not by predicting anything, not by trading more or spending more time, but by removing everything that keeps you stuck, stressed and second guessing. So if you're tired of the noise, if you're done with the chaos, this is the portfolio system that will give you clarity, control and peace of mind. And it takes literally less than two hours a month to manage. Let's get into it. Berg's simple Overcomplex. We see this time and time again. People try and over trade, they try and start coming up against like the big boys in the market. And what people forget to realize is they have no edge.
Like that's exactly right. I have to find my edge. I have to go on forums, I have to get into discords, I have to learn about what new contract is on a blockchain. Then I'll have the advantage and I can be a millionaire in 14 seconds. Definitely not going to work. And you're going to lose all your.
Money a hundred percent. And we see this like even when I was going into crypto 2017, like I round trip my first cycle, 2017, 2018, 2019 because I had way too many coins, had way too much stuff going on, had, you know, complex stuff. I was trying to like, you know, outtrade the market. It just doesn't, it doesn't work unless you have an edge. And I think when you realize that your edge is the data and information that you feed yourself and where you consume, that's, that's the difference. And I think for us a collective shift and the way we've invested, the way we win. Like if I think about where I made the most money, it's getting in early into altcoins where we've done the research ahead of everyone else, we hold for a period of time, we wait until everyone else is buying it and then we sell it.
Simple. Exactly right. Like that is a brilliant path to wealth. And you're not going to be able to do that by yourself. Like we have a huge team that does that for us. And at the end of the day like it's. Investing is not one of those things where the more time you put in, the more successful you're going to be. Yes, that is just not the case. You need to learn a little bit and get to a decent understanding. But finance is very, and investing is very, very boring. And you need to learn these lessons which do take time so you can actually unlearn them. And this is a very counterintuitive thing. You need to learn that you are not a trader by trying to trade and losing money. Because you will believe you're a trader, you'll believe you're in the 1%, you'll believe all the shit on YouTube and you'll believe that you can make a million dollars and you won't. And you only learn that by losing money. It's like your parents telling you the stove is hot. You're not going to believe until you touch it and you get burnt. And then investing in silly things like you will know what to look out for in time or if you have a really good source of information about why something is a scam or we've seen this before or it's probably not going to play out or it's got a very limited chance of success. All of these things you need to learn so you can unlearn them and discover the type of investor you are and lean hard into that.
Yes, spot on bugs. And I think you know, right now like I've got four altcoins and I'm holding my portfolio, you know, and we, we don't share those, those publicly. That's, you know, we, we retain that for members. But those four altcoins I have high conviction in. And it's a very simple portfolio because simple not only helps you manage your emotions and manage your conviction on those assets, it helps you sell. And the biggest mistake that people make is they round trip in crypto, it's the number one thing people join us for is to build out their exit strategy and it actually starts at what you're buying. Your exit strategy doesn't start when you start hitting the sell button. The exit strategy starts with your portfolio and how and where you're allocating your assets. That's where it starts.
That's exactly right. Like once you have your goals and you understand your risk and a few other things, then the assets you invest in becomes clear and you actually set your goals at the start and you trigger them along the way. Like there's in like software development as well. Like this is a method of testing where you literally just have the goals that you want to do and your software will like pass those tests. And it's like, okay, this is how I've made it, right? Whereas it's kind of like, you know, QA kind of way of doing things. And it's just, it makes so much sense. So, you know, you've actually got there, you've achieved the thing and just keep it really, really simple, like cut down to the essentials.
And I have a wealth formula that I put together for our platinum strategy day a couple of weeks ago. And that the, the formula is wealth capital times time times conviction times structure. So essentially what I'm saying there is, where I see people make mistakes, is that they, their capital that they have is not in the market for long enough because they've become impatient. They may be holding altcoins that they don't have conviction in. And what happens when there's market volatility is you panic and you make poor decisions. And then the structure of the portfolio is where a lot of people make mistakes as well is because they go too heavy on an altcoin and because they're trying to make more money quickly or they try and position their portfolio in this kind of funky way where they've got, you know, a lot of old coins and they're trading in and out and they're trying to time the market. And then you just forever on this yo yo, always being late because you're listening to information and data and sources from YouTube and where everyone else is listening. And if you're listening to the same content as everyone else, guess what? You are on the wrong side of the boat. You know, 90% of people in crypto don't make money. You only hear the good stories and it's very hard to actually win in this space. So to keep a simple strategy and portfolio strategy for me is majority bitcoin. Right now there's a lot of altcoins that are down a significant amount because they're lacking fundamentals, they're lacking any sort of value, you know, and we're sticking really to the high quality assets, particularly in the layer one space right now. And we have deep conviction. We're staying in the game long enough to capture the cycle growth. And we have the framework and structure of the portfolio to protect the capital rather than being emotional and being overinvested. And it's honestly far simpler than people think.
Can you say that formula again? Yep.
So wealth equals capital multiplied by time, multiplied by conviction, multiplied by structure.
All right, let's go through those because I like this so much. So obviously the more capital you have, the easier things are going to be to get the return that you want. So if you want to get a hundred K return, if you're starting with ten grand, you're going to have to 10x your money. If you're starting with a million dollars, you need 10%. Very, very easy time. The longer you have, the longer you have to get it right so you don't have to chase that 10x in one year. You can have 10% per year over 10 years and you'll be able to get there. Conviction. If you don't have conviction in what you're doing, you will get shaken out. So if you look at an altcoin or any type of investment and you have a thesis on it and then you start to see this hokey information, this fear, this uncertainty, this doubt, and it starts to creep in and you get emotional and you need to take action, you're shaken out of your position, you will sell that even though nothing has fundamentally changed. And then structure as well. Are all your assets working together? Do you have the right allocations? And I would even get into say, structures I see like kind of tax structure, those kind of things, like legal kind of things. And think about this, those are all multipliers. So you could have a million dollars of capital, but if your time is really low, that's not a multiplier of a million dollars times 1.1 10%. It's probably minus 10% because you want to do it in three months. Right. So multipliers can work both ways. If you don't have your conviction, that's a negative multiplier on your capital and your time because you will get shaken out, you will lose that capital sum, a percentage of it, and that's a negative multiplier. So it works in both ways.
Yeah, totally. And, and, and automating that to make it super, you know, simple is something that you've, you've taught me. Bugs around like just automating your, your, your strategy, building a system around it so you forget about it. And I think that's one thing that a lot of people don't realize that, that you know, that you're trying to like really time tops and bottoms to harshly. It's very, very hard to do that. In fact, it's probably close to impossible. You know, I, I accumulate Bitcoin consistently during periods of, of, of downwards, periods of volatility because it's a great time to accumulate during the, during 2018 and 2019. I I used get paid in bitcoin and I took my entire salary in bitcoin for two years minus expenses. And what happened was it was boring as shit because I'm an all or nothing guy and like to, to buy a little bit of bitcoin every week sucks because I'm like, oh, I'm not a millionaire yet. But guess what? After two years, I accumulated a heap of bitcoin that I wouldn't have done unless I automated it. So automating the strategy is so important as well.
Yep, absolutely. Like the things that are important in your life, you just want systems to work to you and you always work for you and you fail to the level of your systems. If you've got 200 square meters of grass out the front of your house, are you going to go out there and are you going to water every single day by hand and spend an hour of your time doing that? Hell no. You're going to spend some time up front, you're going to lose one of your weekends, you're going to go to bunnings, you're going to buy a sprinkler system, you're going to install it and that will run year round and that is running for you. And you will have a healthy lawn. It'll be nice and green. Anything that you can automate, remove emotion from and execute against your plan is an absolutely amazing thing. And just getting back to like to the goals when I was talking about software development, so this thing is called test driven development. What you do is you write your automated testing before you write your code. So Ben, you give me the requirements, you're like, hey, bs, go build this AI thing. I write all of the tests that I need, then I go and write my code and execute against it to see if it passes those tests. This is the exact same process we've run you through at Collective Shift, where we look at your, your goals, your risk tolerance, your time horizons, all those things. We write down your goals, then we move towards, okay, these are the assets that you can look at and you form your structure and your portfolio from there and then you get towards those goals. So you write out the test that needs to pass and the execution against that to know you succeeded. Then you start building the thing.
Yeah, and that's where emotion takes over because you start making decisions that's not actually, you know, driven off, you know, logic and a plan. You're just kind of shooting for the, from the hip and hoping for the best. And that's like, that's obviously not the right thing to do, but you get sucked into it when you don't have a plan. And I think know, I think about one of our platinum clients, Jason, who I remember him because he was a guy that came to us that was facing a heap of losses in his, in his portfolio. He joined us basically with the hope of trying to turn things around and learn how to actually profit from the market. And he was on this, you know, path of losing a lot of money because his portfolio was up the wazoo. But what he really lacked was a sell strategy. And he didn't know when to take profits and he was just holding assets that he shouldn't have been. And he was also just, you know, holding them far too long as well over cycles and not getting the right ones. And when we sat down with him and was able to build like, and he says this, like, build a proper sell strategy, there was a plan that he could follow and was simple. He's now more profitable. He's up two and a half X, he's up 250% from when he joined after being in a, in a pretty bad, you know, you know, losing position. And it wasn't anything complex. It wasn't any crazy AI bot or like, it wasn't any kind of crazy 100x altcoin that we got him in, but it was around simplifying, cutting to a strategy and executing. That was the difference.
Exactly. And I've seen this, here's for ultimate simplicity, and I've actually seen this with, with one of our members where they wrote down all their goals, everything they needed, and they decided the assets they were going to invest in. They signed up to an exchange, they do a direct debit every single week and they buy their crypto. And every week that's accumulating. And let's do an example now, bitcoin's at roughly $90,000. And let's just say we're only buying bitcoin. Bitcoin. Just to keep it simple, I set up a direct debit. Every week, 200 comes outta my bank, it goes to my exchange, it automatically buys bitcoin. That's automation. But you get to the next level where you can execute your sales strategy, you can set sell orders and ladder out. So let's say I want to start selling at $150,000, I can start to set orders at 150, then the next one 160, next one 170, and I can literally go to sleep. Every week that money comes out. It keeps buying bitcoin, It Buys it when it's high, it buys it when it's low. You get an average price. And my goal is to start selling at $150,000. Cause that's going to fulfill whatever I want to buy. I want to buy a Jet Ski next year, let's say that's what I want to do. And it will automatically sell. I go to sleep, I wake up, Bitcoin has hit, the money is in my account. I have done literally nothing and that is doing all the work for me. Could you imagine the equivalent of this? I have to go to the gym every single day, right? If I want to be fit, I have to exercise. Gotta find 30, gotta do all this stuff. Could you imagine if someone could do my push ups for me? In the real world that doesn't exist. Your PT ain't gonna do your push ups for you. It doesn't work that way. But in finance someone else can do that, they can do your pushups for you. It is an absolute gift.
Yeah. Yep, 100%. And you know, on a, on a bitcoin level it's just automating and buying and just keeping it super simple. On the altcoin level you need to be a little bit more strategic when you buy it. Because usually when people buy is like when the market's pumping. And you know, as a, at a super simple strategy there's a couple of ways you can do this. One is you can just wait until we are in, you know, complete extreme fear or fear on the, on the fear and greed index and you start to accumulate during those periods. Very simple strategy. The other one that I look at is, you know, as is the rsi. So it's a relative strength index. And if you look at that on altcoins, you know, when we go, you know, on the daily level if you just look at when the relative strength index goes below 40. Right? And it's happened a few times this year. But even if you lower it to like 30, there's been two points year to date that the daily RSI has gone below 30. And those points was back in February when altcoins essentially were just. It was about a month before the peak bottom of tariffs, right. And something like Hyper Liquid went on a run of just after that period. If you bought below 30 at that point there, hyperliquid went up 312% from that point. The latest point that it went below that 30 RSI is the 24th of November. So that was just, you know, relatively recently and we haven't had a Big spike yet. But you usually see a lag of the relative strength index is showing how much sell pressure is in the market, which usually indicates that we are at the peak bottom of, I guess for selling or like the amount of sell pressure has come to an end or close to an end. And those like periods of times where you just use basic indicators, basic understanding of the market, basic fear and greed, basic buy and sell pressure on the market just gives you good indications of when to buy and sell. Same on the upside, when to take profits. You know, 70 is a great point. We look at the three times that it's, it's hit 70. It's usually been a local top. So we're not saying trading, we're not saying you need to over allocate or overthink this. It's more about if you have capital to deploy and you're wondering when to buy. Looking at a couple of basic things that we look at that we share with our clients is a great way, especially on altcoins, to make sure you don't time the market incorrectly.
And that example I gave before with Bitcoin, that will work. With altcoins, yeah, you need to spend a little bit more time on it. And you can look at those couple of indicators, check them every couple of days and if you're a platinum member, you'll see all that stuff in our announcements. Anyway, it's like five minutes a day and you're done. If you need, if you have a very risky, fast moving thing, yeah, you need to spend more time on it. If that's the kind of investor you want to be and you want to make some more money and take on a bit more risk, you allocate that time to it, but just keep it simple and pare it back. You don't need all this crazy stuff. And as humans we feel like we need all this crazy stuff. The amount of effort I put in is what I get back. I need to learn it. I need to be the best. Sometimes you just need to listen to the experts. And we get taught this all the time by our mentors where we just learn from them and like, look, you can go on this journey, you can spend 10,000 hours learning all this crap or you can listen to me and look at these three things and you.
Can have success 100%. 100%. And you know, it's different if you're in the market versus you looking to come in the market. Like it really depends on what stage you're at. But like again, building a simple portfolio is more around making sure the structure is right, making sure you have a good foundation of Bitcoin, and then positioning your entries for altcoins if you want to take that risk at the right time. And then it's a bit more set and forget, you know, you can't just completely leave it alone if you want to be in altcoins. But you know, when you do enter, you know you are taking more risk because the ultimate goal, and this is back to the framework that we use, like the reason why we buy altcoins is to accumulate more Bitcoin. That's the only reason we do it. If they're not outperforming bitcoin while you're holding it, you know, and that's that whole sort of framework and structure that we utilize to build upon. So, you know, that's kind of the core framework around keeping things simple. Um, you know, it's just, I just have never seen someone that's come to me with a super complex portfolio unless you're full time in crypto and you, you know, a full time trader. It actually play out.
Just think about your life as well. So people of different ages listening to this. If you're under 30, don't have kids, 30 to 50, 50 plus. Just think about your life. Think about how much time you spend at work, your partner, your relationships, your children, all the complexity you have in your life, all your house maintenance, all that sort of shit. This is not another area where you need complexity. You need simplicity. And as you. Well, I've noticed as I get older, I want more simplicity in my life. I want slower mornings, I want more time to myself. I don't always want to be thinking about crazy shit. I want to live my life, do my weird hobbies and spend time with my family now. And any areas in your life, you can get simplicity and leverage. Absolutely, go for it. And finance is definitely one of those things.
Love it. Great callbergs. So to wrap up there, like most people make investing way harder than it needs to be. You know, over, over complicating, mixing my words here. Over complicating, trying to like return more than what is expected because, you know, of urgency or, you know, timing or whatever it might be. But that's why people lose. So if there's one thing you know you can walk away with today, it's like simplicity isn't a downgrade. It's the strategy that actually builds wealth. Choose simple, choose structure, and you're going to be genuinely ahead of so many investors, especially in crypto.
A hundred percent. And one other thing I'll say is you don't need to make all your money in two to five years. You can do average things for an above average period of time and you will be the 1%. So don't get sucked into the hype. And I have to do everything. And everyone's living this way. They're not. They're in debt, they're crazy. They're selling you a course. Honestly, just pick which one is right for you and just go for it. Like, as long as you start investing, you'll be absolutely fine. And you'll be in that 40% of people that invest, 60% of people don't. And you will be in the top tranche.
