Welcome to Sales Process Made Easy. The show helping seven to eight figure industry construction and trade. Sales and business leaders. Finally end the stress of inconsistent sales by simplifying your sales systems so your team can close more deals and grow faster. I'm your host, Ben Wright, a leader who has been building businesses and sales teams just like you for the last 20 years.
Today's Focus is around the Ford Motor Company, and by the end of this episode, we will have deepened your perspectives around how operational efficiency and innovation shouldn't just be left to the back of house teams, but how sales teams can really clearly drive growth from prioritizing their own efficiencies. So Ford's a company that grew explosively around about the early 1900s, 1913, to be precise, was the time when we really saw Ford take off like a rocket. Now, back in those days, there were no computers, there were no typewriters, I believe, and certainly no phones or iPhones, right? But Ford focused really heavily on how they could drastically lower their manufacturing costs to reduce their prices significantly, and essentially take cars from being a luxury to something that's affordable for the mass market. Now, stay with me because there's a very short circuited relevant lesson here for us as sales leaders that we can take from Ford. But to finish off that story, the Model T, which was Ford's product at the time, that became a real symbol of mobility, right? With them selling 15 million units in the seven years that followed, right? So 15 million units out the door by 1920, huge numbers, huge growth that all came about from innovation in process. Now there is without any doubt at all, the innovation in sales process can also accelerate sales growth. I've worked with a team recently towards the end of last year that had a sales process that was characterized by meeting the customer, engaging with them, doing a sales design, preparing a sales quote, and then trying to close out the deal. Super clunky process was taking the team quite a number of weeks, in fact a couple of months to work through that process and had multiple meetings for customers. Now, in their eyes, that was a justified strategy because the multiple engagement points really grew that emotional connection with the business. From where I sat, we were investing significantly more, tens of hours more to into dealing with our customers on a hunch that it created a great emotional connection with us, where in fact, what was actually happening at the time with that team was their Sales were going backwards. In fact, they had just had their worst quarter in a number of years when I joined to help them. So what we did with that business was we really focused around simplifying the process, around getting really clear on what customers want early to build that emotional connection, but then combining the design and the quote process into one meeting that nailed everything that was important to the customer at once. What happened as a result is that team went from its worst quarter on record to not only catching up sales from that quarter, but having their best year on record by the end of that 12 months. So the lesson here for sales or for sales leaders is really that if you can prioritize efficiencies in your process.
That simplify it, that reduce friction, and really that allow your team to get out to more customers with a great sales experience, that's where you're going to get growth. Because without doubt, if we don't invest in scalable systems and processes, businesses do hit bottlenecks. I'm working with a team right now who have a sales system that is heavily reliant on Excel spreadsheets and memories. And quite simply, the conversation with this team as recently as this week was that if they don't streamline their processes to allow tasks and reminders and less brain power, more systemized reminders on what to do with customers, that the business would not scale. That instead simply, we'd start to see the three team members in this sales team reach burnout and leave the business. Right. Which invariably would result in the business going backwards. So sales leaders out of the Ford Motor Company lesson, where they really focused on that assembly line process and streamlining it, it's to think about what we can do with our sales process that will ensure we have a more streamlined experience for our customers, where we can use automation to allow their details to be put into the CRM and allow faster quotes. Where we can be having quote templates for our team that have one page ready for personalization so they're not creating quotes from scratch or not creating mundane quotes that are the same for customers each and every time. Where we have a sales process that focuses in the first call around getting clear on what customers need, who's making the decisions, and when they're making them buy, rather than leaving them to salespeople to find out across the process, right across their journey. It's. It's fast, it's lean, it's efficient. We get it out early and it helps our customers decide if we're the ones they want to be working with so for sales leaders, and we'll look more closely into this on Friday. The key call to action out of today is to have a think about any areas of your sales process right now that are clunky and inefficient. Get that done. And that's a great result from today.
