Bill Gallagher explains what makes a BHAG (Big Hairy Audacious Goal) work: it should transform your company and connect to your purpose and strengths, not just chase a number. A real BHAG inspires your team because it means something.

Have you had trouble setting the big long term goal for your business? You know, the bhag, Jim Collins term.
For the big hairy, audacious goal, that.
Thing that's supposed to inspire and engage everyone?
Hi, I'm Bill Gallagher, scaling coach and host of the Scaling Up Business podcast.
At Scaling Coach and the Scaling Up.

Get your business scaling up successfully.
We also got loads of low cost.
Coaching options to help you and support.
You in getting your company scaling, no.
Matter what the economy is doing, what.
Industry you're in, or what part of.
The world you're from. So I'm working with the owner and head of a very large construction firm.
In the western US recently and he had real trouble with this idea. What's the right one to pick and.
What do I really want and that.
Kind of thing and how am I going to do this?
But the real breakthrough came when I.
Pointed out that it's not about how a bhag, a great, powerful bhag, is.
Not something that you already know how to do.
It is transformative in that when you declare it, it's going to take something, a shift, some transformation in order to get there. It's not a simple linear projection. So when you share it with your team after having declared it, the point of the whole thing is that they're.
All engaged and inspired by this enormous challenge.
Look, the people most inspired to go climb Mount Everest are not the people.
Who'Ve been there five or six times.
Same thing is true with your bhag.
It's not something that you should already know how to do and just be.
More of the same. It is transformative in nature and it inspires people with its audaciousness. The hairiness is about how scary it can be, right?
We think of a hairy monster, big.
Hairy, audacious goal, right? That's the term. B haggard. So the point of this thing is for you to pick something that connects with your purpose and what you're really great at in the world and isn't merely a financial goal. Why aren't financial goals helpful? Well, you and the owners of the company might care a great deal about that, but anybody who isn't directly participating in the value of the company or the profitability is probably not going to get too excited about it, and certainly not your suppliers, members of the community and so on. So the bhag ought to be tied to what you do best and your purpose, the why of the work, and.
Be something that really lights you up, right?
Hope this has been helpful in helping you get started picking your bhag. Like I said, we've got loads of ideas and things like this, little nuggets.
And even longer things on how to.
