Bill Gallagher says leaders who get frustrated easily should practice management by walking around to build empathy. Never embarrass employees publicly. Note problems to address later, and lead with appreciation instead.

But God, he would get pissed off and angry about things all the time. It was a big company, it had gotten way big and grown well beyond where he had started with it sometime before. And so the remedy was really this. He just got out more. He got out of his office, he got around the other offices in the business, he moved around the company. Management by walking around was our prescription for this CEO. As he started to understand what was going on and why, as he came alongside people, instead of hearing from them adversarially, he. He started to have more compassion for what they were dealing with, help them understand them and they to him. And the love was raised in that business. Anyway, I think manage by walking around is a really terrific tool as long as the thing you're teaching people is not that when they see you, they have to hide what they're doing. Don't ever like, come down on people right there and embarrass them or vilify them or that kind of thing. If you've got something unsafe or unethical or whatever, you have to deal with it. But do it in a human that doesn't embarrass or upset the person that you're dealing with unless you're willing to fire them on the spot. So management by walking around is a great art to develop and will really give your steps in the day, make you feel great about things, give you enhanced perspective. I know it helped this CEO and it helped me. It's helped an awful lot of people walk around, get to know and appreciate people, find something to love about, what people are up to, something to appreciate, to be grateful for, to acknowledge them for. Those are the things to do and take your notes about the problems that you see and go back and work on them later. Help them to do them, but don't blast them when you walk by. That should be the time for the appreciation, the gratitude. Anyway, I hope that's helpful for you. My name is Bill Gallagher, host of the Scaling Up Business Podcast. You'll find all this and more@scalingcoach.com thanks. Keep scaling Up.
