In this personal testimony, Blake Robert Templeton recounts his journey from being a “workhorse slave” – a pressure‑driven, rigid husband – to an “emasculated servant” who tried to please his wife Julie at all costs. Julie’s confession that she no longer felt attracted to him because there was no polarity sparked a crisis. Blake explains that God revealed to him a biblical model of masculinity consisting of five primal roles: king, warrior, shepherd, lover, prince, and servant. He realized he had been stuck in two extreme roles (warrior and servant) and that true masculine balance requires moving fluidly among all five. By learning to lead in each role, Blake reports that polarity, attraction, and adventure returned to his marriage, allowing him and Julie to maintain romantic desire even amid chaos and pain. The talk frames these insights theologically, positioning balanced masculine leadership as essential for a thriving, God‑centered marriage.

For years, I was what I would have called the workhorse slave. You know, grinding in business, carrying pressure, bringing that tension home into my marriage. And then God showed me that I was destroying my relationship with him and my wife. That revelation changed me. But then I made a mistake that almost every man makes. I swung to the complete opposite extreme, emasculated servant. So instead of pressure and rigidity, I gained idolatry in pleasing her. My mission was keep her happy. So I treated her like royalty, and our relationship felt easy, fun, and light. But something happened I never expected when Julie said it. It completely changed how I understood masculinity. One night she sat me down and said, I need to tell you something, and I hate to tell you this, but for some reason I'm not attracted to you anymore. She said this. For the first 6 months it felt like a dream because I'd gone from rigidity and this pressure-driven guy to giving her everything she ever wanted. But then she said something that exposed the real problem, and it's something that most men completely misunderstand. She said, there's no polarity anymore. I don't want to lead. I need you to be the king. I need you to have a spine of God. Sometimes I need you to actually tell me no, not because you're rigid, but because you're wise. God revealed that I had gone into emasculated servant and he wanted me to actually now hold her with strong yet tender arms to guide her back to Jesus when she drifted and not seek to provide happiness. And that moment forced me to confront something I never would have understood before, because what God showed me next reframed masculinity for me. Men are designed to operate in 5 primal roles: king, warrior, shepherd, lover, prince, and servant. When I realized that, I had been living in 2 extremes— extreme warrior and extreme servant— and both are counterfeits of the real masculinity. Because when a man only has 1 role, he loses balance that God designed, and then attraction disappears. But when a man learns how to move between the 5 primal roles, something powerful happens. Polarity comes back, the attraction comes back, the adventure comes back. And today, Julie and I live in constant romantic attraction, no matter the chaos, no matter the pressure, and no matter the earthly pain. Because when a man leads in all 5 roles, he becomes superhuman, a man every woman yearns to both trust and desire.
