Blake Robert Templeton argues the gospel isn't primarily about escaping hell, but about Christ taking territory over death through the crucifixion and resurrection. Jesus' blood pays for sin, but the real point is making believers ambassadors who embody His likeness and live out His authority in the world.

Most people think the gospel is about escaping hell, but that's not what the gospel that Jesus preached was. Jesus preached the gospel of taking territory. See, the word gospel is good news, and good news started with him actually doing the greatest act a man could ever do for another, which was dying on the cross, allowing him then to rise from the dead. So he took power over death, and then we were able to actually use his blood as the payment for of our sins. See, that was just the beginning. That's like, it's a very entry point. Not to degrade the value of what he did, but the reason he did it was not so you could claim an identity and not walk it out. The reason he actually died was so you could be an ambassador, like-minded, in him, of him, through him, and live from him.
