In this Billionaire Brain Trust interview, host Steve Woodruff speaks with Dr. Alexandra Cook, who runs operational and investment functions for two family offices – her own family’s office and Gauntlet Ventures, a fund‑of‑funds where she heads due‑diligence. Drawing on a CPA background and deep ERP/software expertise, she streamlines back‑office processes while sourcing and evaluating deals. Cook describes her investment philosophy as people‑first: the team’s ability to execute outweighs the novelty of an idea, though ideas must be realistic and scalable. She focuses on early‑stage technology ventures, especially AI, but remains sector‑agnostic, also investing in crypto and blockchain with her sons. Real estate is another pillar, with personal experience in niche European properties and family‑office exposure to both direct deals and fund structures. Throughout, she emphasizes the importance of having the right partners and the collaborative role of family in shaping investment strategy.

Well, I'm with Alexandra Cook, and, uh, very excited to be with you again. We met earlier this year at another conference for Newport, uh, at the Opal Family Office event, and you're one of the presenters or the panelists, uh, speaking today and, and tomorrow as well.
Yes, I have two panels that I'm moderating.
Great, and I'm glad to talk to you again. I know you help run two 2 family offices, is that correct? One's your own family's family office and another family office as well. And you help allocate capital. What, what else do you do? What are your roles in the family office?
So, uh, I wear many hats. One is that I provide operational back office support and streamlining. I have a lot of expertise through my background as a CPA and also as a, as a software and ERP system expert. So I apply that in the family office space. But there, and as you mentioned, I'm also an investment professional, and as such, I help source deals and perform due diligence. And I do that on behalf of the Cooper Family Office on a fractional basis, and also for Gauntlet Ventures, which is a fund of funds, and I'm their head of due diligence.
Yeah, great. Did you always know you were going to get into this? When did you figure it out?
Yeah, so as you alluded to, I also have a role within my own family. And at a very young age, my mother started introducing me to banking finance concepts and taking me with her to appointments. It was something that I was always interested in and felt that I kind of had a natural proclivity for, and I developed it on from there through my academics and career.
And I know that you have your son Thaddeus here as well. I know he goes to a lot of conferences with you. He's there.
So does my other son Victor. He could not attend this particular one, but the two of them often accompany me and And they help me with the investment strategy for ourselves personally, particularly in certain sectors like even crypto and blockchain.
Would you mind sharing with us what types of things you like to invest in, in alternatives, just in general, high level? Not the stories.
Yes. In my career, what I've had probably the most experience with since I migrated more to the investment side is being in the private equity, particularly the venture space. Industries that you like to venture? Yes, to some extent industry agnostic, but I'm definitely very much supportive of tech. I like to see early-stage venture tech, seed, A, maybe in there, and sector agnostic. Everybody can apply tech. Certainly excited right now about the AI space. We have to look for the quality deals like with anything, but it's, it's a great time to be an investor and possibly see some renewed opportunity.
When you're looking in that space, do you find maybe a founder that has a lot of promise or has done some successful things, or is it maybe the idea that they have kind of that you share? Maybe it's a little bit more my white warrior.

It has to be a viable product or process and have some scalability such that there's an opportunity for the company to be successful. But given that, it's really about the team because—
Yeah.
Anybody can be an ideas person, but who can execute?
Yeah.
Right. And these people who are involved, the founders and other members of leadership, even those who might come on board later, they are your business partners if you make that kind of investment as a direct investor. And it's important to always have the right partners.
So people like, you know, do you invest in real estate or other traditional—
Yes, invest in real estate as well. Personally, I've done a lot of real estate investing in Europe. Okay. And in some specialty niche properties, but Some of the other families that I represent or have consulted for, and the ones that I mentioned that I have the key relationships with currently, do have real estate investments as well. One of them primarily through funds and the other some direct deals.
Okay, great. Yeah, well, I appreciate it so much. I appreciate you taking time to talk with us. It's always a pleasure. So thank you.
