5 Hard Truths Self-Published Authors Must Face in 2026

Julie Broad of Book Launchers outlines five realities for self-published authors in 2026: AI can't replace your lived experience, Amazon's systems demand rule-following, books are becoming interactive, community beats algorithms, and speed without quality fails. Authors need engaged readers, not just fast output.

If you plan to self publish in 2026 and you think the biggest threat is AI you're already behind because there's a bigger threat you should be paying attention to if you want to set yourself up for success as an author in 2026. This video is for you. Hi, I'm Julia the book Broad, founder of Book Launchers and your host here at Book Launchers tv. Book Launchers is your first choice for all all things relating to writing, publishing and promoting nonfiction books. Now, I have to break it to you right up front. The biggest threat to you and your author's success in 2026. It's you. Yeah. Your choices, shortcuts you take, and secretly, that not so great book idea. There's hope though. Let's get into the five things you need to know to survive and thrive in 2026. Number one, AI not your competition. It can be your ally. In fact, did you know AI is producing more books per week than most humans produce in a lifetime? But the plot twist that people aren't saying out loud that much is that AI is not replacing authors. AI in some ways is exposing authors. Because if your book reads like a predictable, hollow, vaguely inspirational TED talk summary, AI can already do that better, faster and for cheaper. AI is really good at writing how to content and it's getting better at storytelling. But guess what? AI doesn't have your lens, your story. See this motel? This is the Prairie Schooner Motel in Bassano, Alberta, Canada. That was my home for the first 17 years of my life. In my early days, we lived in one of the motel rooms. And then my parents made enough money to build the house. My parents, they worked 24 7. If the rooms were not full and somebody needed a room and rang the doorbell at 2am, my dad would put on his blue velvet housecoat and go on downstairs and rent them a room. My upbringing was pretty unique. I literally lived in a business. I have a different lens on what it means to work hard, and I have a different lens on what it means to bring your work home with you. AI does not have that lens. AI will have the five steps to improve your leadership skills, but it doesn't have the why behind why. Those five steps are the ones that you want people to pay attention to. So you have to let your reader know you and your heart so that it matters to them. In 2026, readers don't want good enough. They want to see the scars, the screw ups, the stories that don't fit neatly into a machine pattern. They want to connect with you. And after they are done reading your book, they should feel like they just had a great coffee date with you. AI is flooding the marketplace, which means the only books that stand out are the ones with an unmistakable human pulse. If you haven't lived the lessons you're teaching or you're too afraid to share the messy parts, you're writing a book that could have been generated by a bot on a coffee break. All right, Number two, learn to play with the bots, not fight against them. The bots are here and they can be brutal. Amazon's automated policing systems are tightening every quarter. They're trying to improve the customer experience with every step. And sometimes good stuff gets thrown out with the bad stuff. Know the rules and stick to them. Amazon does not want your friends and family posting reviews about your book. They have complex algorithms and they know when. When you know someone, don't do it. People always say, well, how are they going to know? What if I do this? Just don't mess with it. Amazon wants you to produce a good book that is a great reader experience. If you think you can phone it in, you know, skip the editing or skip the structure, just upload it and see what happens. You are setting your up for some challenges and the bots are working hard to keep the fluffy stuff away. This means you need to follow the rules, because if Amazon sniffed something, something's off, you can get shut down. We're seeing automated account freezes, we're seeing reviews pulled down in batches and delays that feel like you're waiting at the DMV. This is not going to go away in 2026. The message is clear. If your book is even adjacent to a gray zone, it's risky. Beyond that, I think it's important to understand what Amazon cares about and play within it to appeal to their algorithm. Amazon wants to see consistent sales day in, day out, and it will reward you with appearances in the also bots and search results. If you show it that traffic from a variety of sources is hitting your book and converting a singular strategy of Amazon ads or ebook sales every quarter, and that's all you're doing, that's going to hurt you more than help you with Amazon now. So driving consistent traffic there, optimizing your page for conversion, and consistently staying on top of that optimization and creating a great reader experience is going to be rewarded in the long run. Now, keywords matter, but the experience and conversion matters even more. For this reason, pay close attention to your title, subtitle your cover description, your read sample and focus on Getting new reviews from your ideal reader on a regular basis. Is that all? I know it's a lot. And you can always get help from a company like Book Launchers. But it's not just a lot. It's everything that matters in 2026 and selling on Amazon in particular. Just worth it. Number three, books are becoming interactive. And if yours isn't, it might be getting old fast. Let's talk about something huge that I'm early in talking about. But it's here and by the end of 2026, I think it's going to be far more commonplace. Books no longer sit down, read it, and leave experiences. 2026 readers are quickly going to expect books that talk back. We are entering an era where where your audiobook, for example, isn't just going to be narrated. It can answer questions, take notes for the listener, highlight things, and it's time to pay attention to this. Your book could be connected to an app that gives next steps. Tools, calculators or readers can interact with your frameworks through bots trained on your writing. We've actually had a bot for a while now. If you've met her, juliethebookbot. Tell us about her in the comments. She is in our premier community in school and she's also in our software, the Author Launch Kit. Now, QR codes are still something that makes it more interactive. You know, that will trigger videos, worksheets or decision trees, but interactivity is taken a step up. A book is no longer the end product. It is a doorway. And I've been saying this for a while now, but it is not a product or a business card. Your book is intellectual property. And because you're self publishing, you own that intellectual property, which, which means you can turn it into multi format interactive platforms and translate it into other languages. Thank you Kindle Translate for introducing that at the end of 2025. And you can turn all of this into your foundation for your author empire. So you don't have to create an interactive book. But as we roll into 2026, if your book is static, you could be competing with dynamic books that offer personalized guidance. I mean, imagine reading a negotiations chapter and being able to immediately ask your negotiation bot to script your next email or handle the objection that's got you stumped. Or listening to the audiobook and pausing to say, hey, repeat that last part, but give me examples for someone working in healthcare. Or can you define that word, not science fiction. This is happening right now and we've actually created a cool interactive version of self publish and succeeds second edition. So head on over to booklaunchers.com school because. Because as I film this, it's in production, but when you're watching this, it should be live so you can see what I'm talking about. All right, number four. Community is your competitive moat. In 2026, traditional publishing is still rejecting authors for one reason. You don't have a big enough platform to sell books. Now they've rejected you, not the book. And so here's the plot twist. Self published authors are now outperforming many traditionally published authors because they control their ip, their timeline and the message, and they're building a community. When you have a community, you don't need thousands of people. You need a strong group of hundreds of supporters. Folks like my YouTube besties right here. You know, Kevin Hall, Mike Herd. So good to have you back. KJ, Jeremy Shapiro, Jack Groppel, they're all YouTube besties. And if you look in this video, you'll probably see them saying hello in the comments. I am so grateful to each and every one of you for comments, likes, shares, and all of your support. And you make what I do every day worth it. And people who take the time to contribute in a community or create their own community themselves for longevity and success in their author business. 2026 is the year of self sustaining author. Most authors think their biggest challenge is visibility. In 2026, I think the biggest challenge is creating connection. The algorithm doesn't really care about your book. Amazon definitely doesn't care. Social media doesn't care. But a community, a community will buy your book, share your book, even tell others about your book, hopefully post reviews about your book, hint, hint, and keep your ideas alive long after the launch window closes. Community is now a moat of protection, and it's the one thing AI can't replicate and competitors can't steal. Your readers want to belong to something. They want to have a shared mission, a shared identity, a shared transformation. They want a place to ask questions, get support, cheer each other on, and deepen the ideas they got from your book. Your book, it's not the destination. It's kind of like the membership card. And if you're not building the community around it, someone else will build one around your topic. And they're going to have your reader's attention instead of you. The authors who will win in 2026 aren't the loudest or the smartest. They're the ones who create a space where their readers feel seen, where their ideas live beyond the page. And the conversation continues and compounds. Number five, Speed is rewarded, but only when paired with substance. Here's the paradox. The market's rewarding speed, but it's also simultaneously punishing. Low quality. That means fast books will win, but bad books will die really fast. And something that's mediocre is going to be completely invisible. So here's what to think about and to do in 2026. Get your hook right. That outcome of the outcome for your ideal reader. Check out self publish and succeed to learn exactly how to do that. Get the reader right. That book will help you with that too. And the structure. Then, and only then, you can write fast. You can dictate, outline, draft with AI tools or have your writer or coach support you. By the way, we have a course starting in January that will work with you. And our goal is 12 weeks later you have your first draft. So by the end of March you're done. You can learn more about the course down below. You can't skip clarity, you shouldn't skip strategy and well, you absolutely cannot skip quality. Save your money to invest in editing and cover learn strategies so you understand it's not just a cover. Speed might get you attention if you're first. But when someone starts reading your book, you need to hook them and have them want to keep going. And that is where quality comes in. And of course the strategy will then monetize it. That's the 2026 formula. Personally, I am excited for 2026. I think that authors have a tremendous opportunity to build bigger and better empires thanks to the tools and and platforms we have now that we didn't have a few years ago. That said, every opportunity comes with challenges and being the best possible version of yourself and putting the best possible version of your work is not a nice to have. It is mandatory. You're competing with good enough material from AI, so you have to be great. 2026 is not the year of just get it done and hope. It's the year of intentional high impact, high quality self publishing. If you want your book to have a chance, then get inside the community filled with authors who aren't trying to be average. They're already great. Join us in booklaunchers.com school build your book with people who've been through every pitfall and can steer you past them. Go write something a bot could never write. I can't wait to read it.
