Hi, I'm Julie the Book Broad, founder of Book Launchers and your host here at Book Launchers tv. Book Launchers is your first choice for all things related to writing, publishing, and promoting nonfiction books. And one service we offer is a second edition package. So if you ever want help with that or an evaluation of whether you should or should not do it, don't drop us an email@teamoklaunchers.com or visit book launchers.com let's talk about why you might release a second edition. A second edition isn't just about fixing typos. Although yes, that's a great bonus. It's about making your book better and more relevant. I'm currently undertaking a second edition of Self Publish and Succeed. Why? The book is a great read and I am proud of it and it's gotten great reviews. It's also helped add a lot of revenue to Book Launchers. So why mess with it? Well, when I wrote it, AI was not a topic of conversation beyond using Grammarly to edit. We've also worked with hundreds and hundreds of more authors since I wrote the book and we've refined our process a lot. And I have better advice on what does and doesn't work to write a great book that's set up to sell. So it's time. But how do you know when it's time? When? Well, here's when a second edition makes sense. Number one, there's new stuff to talk about. If your book includes research trends or tech references, chances are some of it is outdated. Keep it fresh with an update. 2. You want to address reader feedback. Your audience has spoken. Maybe they want deeper insights, more examples or clearer explanations of certain things. A second edition allows you to deliver exactly that. 3. Just enhancing content, adding new chapters, expanding sections, or including an index can make your book more complete and reader friendly. Years ago, we worked with a successful author, Todd Tresiter, on his book How Much Money Do I Need to Retire? He added a lot of new content to the book to expand it and add more value for the readers. And then we helped him launch another book and rebranded his entire series with all new covers that made it look like they were all together as part of a series. It was. It was a big project, but look at the reviews. He's done well, so that choice paid off. The fourth reason to do it is to boost clarity and readability. Every author improves their skills over time. If you're writing and your voice as you write, has evolved or you see ways to make your message clearer, this is an opportunity to do that. Sometimes you didn't hire editors, or maybe you just didn't know better or didn't have the resources. Either way, you know you can do better. So. So this is your chance to do it. 5. Is adapting to market trends. Maybe your audience has shifted or the competitive landscape has changed. Updating your book can help reposition it for better sales. You can address an emerging market with a slight repositioning. 6. Leveraging a new marketing push A second edition is an opportunity to relaunch your book and get fresh attention from media influencers and readers. Now those are the reasons why. What qualifies as a second edition? Because if you're just editing a couple of typos yet, you don't need a second edition. A second edition is not a minor update. It should include substantial changes like a new chapter, significant content revisions or formatting updates. A simple fix of typers or grammar is just an updated version. Now if you do a second edition, you do need a new ISBN since it's considered a new product. You can't just swap out the files on Amazon without proper designation. So how do you produce a second edition? Well, you've decided you're ready to do it. What you do is step one evaluate exactly what needs updating. So for self publish and succeed, I actually leaned on Alyssa, my production manager, to review it and flag things for me. But you could review reader feedback. What are the common questions, complaints or requests in the reviews and even emails you've received? Check for outdated information. Is there new research, case studies, industry changes that affect your book's content? For us, AI is a huge piece that we're going to be adding in because it just wasn't as accessible and used as it is today. Assess sales trends. If your book has slowed down, consider how updates could make it more relevant. Now once you've done that, number two is to plan those revisions. What's changing? Are you adding sections? Are you updating the introduction and other pieces? How are you going to enhance it, the format and the words for better readability. You'll want to outline these changes so that you have it done in a seamless and strategic way. And then you just have to get to work. Make the updates or hire a writer and talk them through all the things you want to do to get assistance with getting it done. Once you've done that, you're up for step three, which is editing and formatting the new edition. Absolutely. Hire an editor because that fresh set of eyes can ensure your updates integrate smoothly with the old content. Then format it for consistency. Ensure the fonts, headings and layout align with the original while improving where needed. So step four Update your cover and metadata. A new cover design is a smart idea, even if you just say second edition because you want to make it super clear that this is a new addition. You can see that with Todd's book. Optimize your book description. Highlight the updates in your book sales page so readers know why they should get this edition if they should, and then absolutely update your keywords and categories if your book wasn't ranking well before. This is your chance to optimize it. So step five well get that new ISBN and publish the second edition. Every second edition requires a separate ISBN from the first, so you're going to need a new ISBN for each format. Republish those on platforms so upload your new edition to Amazon IngramSpark and any other platforms you've used. If you recorded an audiobook, you'll also need to make changes to your audiobook and re upload the audiobook. By the way, rather than re recording your audiobook, you can use 11 labs to clone your voice and edit your audiobook. Yeah, you're welcome. Oh and by the way, you have to retire. As in kick it out that first edition if you don't want both versions available, which frankly I don't know why you would unpublish the first edition. And if you want to try and keep reviews, contact Amazon to get help with that. Step 6 Market it like it's a brand new book. A second edition is not just a quiet update, it deserves a relaunch. Treat it like a brand new book launch. Announce the updates. Tell your audience what's new and why they should grab this edition. Offer special launch pricing, run limited time discounts to drive sales and get new reviews and absolutely leverage PR and influencer marketing. There's a reason you updated this book. Get people talking about it. Media coverage can help. Position it as a new, improved, must read version for the Times, target ads and promotions, of course, using Amazon and even social media ads to reach new readers. So is a second edition right for you? Well, if you're seeing declining sales, getting repeated reader questions, or you just know there's content that can significantly improve your book, a second edition could be the perfect next step.
