Julie Broad says Amazon's algorithm rewards steady sales over launch-day spikes. Building a real reader community matters more than social media buzz because communities drive repeat purchases, reviews, and word-of-mouth that algorithms can't replicate.

In 2026, the author with the best book doesn't win. It's the author with the best community. You can write a brilliant book. Even if you nail the hook, which is pretty hard to do, and you get the most stunning cover and you have a great launch, you can still watch your book sink like a stone after. Why? Because the Amazon algorithm doesn't care about you. Social media really doesn't care about you. But your community, it does. Community is the new competitive moat. AI can't clone your community and the one thing your competitors can't steal. Your community, a real community, will buy your book, share your book, review your book, even hand sell your book and defend you. When the one star reviewers come knocking, they'll tell other people how great you are and they'll cheer loudly for what you're doing. Basically, with a community, you can keep the conversation alive long after launch week is over. That is what Amazon wants. It doesn't want a one day hit of 100 sales. It wants 50 days of two sales per day from a wide variety of sources. It will reward you with more visibility when you do that. And your community is the backbone to making that happen. Your book is not the destination. It's more like a membership card. And if you're not building a community around it, somebody else will. And then they'll own the reader you thought you were writing for. Want to see what a community can look like? Come on over to our free Author Lab community@book launchers.com school. So the question question isn't how do I sell more books? It's where are my readers gathering and can I be the one that gathers them?
