A short tutorial (spoken) by Julie Broad on how to create a non-fiction book index. It outlines the basic workflow—compile a list of index topics, mark entries in the manuscript using software (Word or InDesign), generate the index, and iteratively refine it—and emphasizes that indexing and preparing the index for layout/ebook requires expertise and adequate time.

Creating a book index is a time consuming task that requires expertise so first there's that list. Once that list of items is created the indexer ensures that the index is organized in a logical and easy to use manner. It also needs to be set up properly in layout or it won't work for an ebook. Neither the index nor setting it up for layout is a simple task so plan ahead for this to be done and to give yourself enough time for it to be done well. If you're doing it yourself or you just want to understand the process, this is how it looks. Like I said create a list of topics. You can use a computer program like Word or Indesign to then mark the entries on each page of your document. Then let the program generate your index and then you just keep tweaking and repeating until you're satisfied. How long the process will take does depend on your experience level and the complexity of your book.
