How to Leverage Media Appearances For Authors

Julie Broad, founder of Book Launchers, says the TV interview itself is only 25% of the value. A syndicated newspaper story once drove real sales for her books. The payoff comes after: post clips on social media, use images in ads, add logos to your website, repost excerpts repeatedly, and follow up with the outlet.

Have you landed a cool TV appearance like this one Michael Brenner landed for his book Mean People Suck. Or this one Robert Krabeck got for Malibu burning. Whether it's TV or a major newspaper or an awesome feature on entrepreneur.com or parents.com or Oprah.com like we've landed for some of our clients, the media appearance itself is only 25% of the value of getting a major media feature. And if you're an author, it's really, really important. You know this and you know what to do next. If you're using media to build your credibility and grow your book sales, this video isn't just for you. It's an absolute must watch for you. Hey there. I'm Julie the book Broad. I'm an Amazon Overall Number 1 Best Selling Author and the founder of a fabulous company called Book Launchers. Our superpower is caring more about you and your book than anybody else as we help you write more, publish and sell a nonfiction book that will boost your brand and make you money. Media appearances are awesome. Being interviewed on live TV is absolutely one of my most favorite things. It's kind of high stress and there's so much happening all at once. But it's also a huge adrenaline rush and it's fun and it's exciting and you feel like a real expert when you get to drop knowledge bombs for two to four minutes on a news segment with a second add. Reality of it is that TV appearances rarely sell books. I've experienced this firsthand. I did a ton of TV interviews and the sales volume from before the TV interview for my books didn't change after that TV interview. The only media appearance that actually showed a noticeable impact on my book sales was a single newspaper article that appeared on the first page of the business section of the Vancouver Sun. Yeah, I'm Canadian. Even though I now live in Los Angeles and that article got syndicated across 100 outlets in Canada, there was a significant lift in book sales that week. But that is the only media I did that showed any real impact on my book sales. And this is not just the case for me. This is the case for many authors. We help a lot of our clients get major media and media appearances. And media is a valuable tool, but it doesn't always sell books. But it is free exposure and it's free advertising. And it's another way to have another touch point with readers and potential readers because you often need to create that feeling of being everywhere before people really see you as an expert and want to read your book. If you do it right, the actual media appearance is only a quarter of what you do to get value from it. Let me say that again. It's not just the media appearance that has value, it's what you do with it afterwards. So here are the five key ways I recommend you leverage that media appearance in order to get full value from it. Number one, the most obvious, Post it on social media. This is the thing that gives you credibility. You were a featured expert by a third party. I mean look at how cool Eric Brotman looks during his interview. He posted this on social media and that is smart. Number two, use the best image for your ads. This is super important. If you're selling a service, have a free opt in offer you can promote, or you have any sort of marketing going on for your business like Facebook ads or ads on LinkedIn, a picture of you on TV or a feature on a major media doesn't look like an ad that. So with an interesting call to action or a promise in the text, you can potentially get a lot of clicks. And it also establishes you as an expert fast. So use that media interview picture for ads. Number three, put the media logo on your website and media kit. You know what I'm talking about. Do the whole as seen on thing because people do give that a level of importance and it establishes credibility, showing that a third party deemed you an expert worthy of interviewing. Number four. Now many people do those three things already, but here are two things, number four and five that I don't think enough people people do Repost on social media with a lesson learned from being on TV or what you talked about. You know, one of the questions you were asked and the answer you gave or an answer you would give today you had a great media appearance. Don't just post it once, use it over and over and over again. Because not everyone sees your content the first time. In fact, the way social media algorithms work these days, you're lucky if 20% of your audience sees any one of your posts. So use it over and over. Who cares if you've posted it before, use it again. Just change up the messaging a little each time to share a lesson that others might find useful. And number five, follow up with the media outlet with a thank you and suggestions about future topics you could talk about. If you have the budget, send a gift basket with a thank you note and a few relevant topics you could speak on in the future. Make sure you include your card and maybe even another copy of your book if you can. And if something newsworthy happens in the future that you can touch on, reach out and suggest what you could speak on. That would be an angle they like for their audience. If you were a good interview, they will be highly likely to bring you back. Media builds credibility. It gets you seen again, which is really valuable when you want to become the known expert in a space. It may not sell a lot of books, but you can leverage it to do so much more for you and your business. So hopefully these five tips help you make the most of any media you land for your book.
